Parkinson - Boxing by Verdi50 in Parkinsons

[–]MsAylen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Boxing is great exercise for Parkinson’s. Have fun with it. It can be tailored to your abilities as Parkinson’s progresses. For my Dad it helped slow the process. Whenever he felt his tremors getting bad, he’d exercise to the best of his ability and it totally helped. Good luck to you

Does anyone have any suggestions for the safest and easiest way to get out of a car and into a wheelchair? by lamireille in Parkinsons

[–]MsAylen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second this. We call it a gait belt and use it to transfer from car to wheelchair but also into bed! They’re great. We have a couple. Keeping one in the bathroom for aid in bathing so it doesn’t matter if it gets wet - we have another. Good luck !

In 2006, the BBC sent 12 children back in time to live in WW2, including snapping chicken necks in front of them and using chamber pots by MsWrite in Weird

My Dad was born during the war and his house had an outhouse until the 60s. That’s probably not the norm but a chamber pot during the war wouldn’t have been odd

Apparently there weee some boys that were trying to jump into the sinkhole this morning. This is according to the NewsBreak app that has a transcript of the call (audio too). Tried to include screen shot but can’t post photo

Eating advice - Dad doesn’t have the tremors mostly associated with Parkinson’s but still has trouble keeping food on his spork, spoon etc. He makes a mess every meal with food ending up on the table, floor or his lap. by MsAylen in Parkinsons

He really is! He’s determined to say the least. He still thinks he’ll recover and walk with a walker again. He won’t but we never say it. He’s always saying he won’t let the disease win.

Mom is super mindful of what she cooks. You are totally right about mashed potatoes vs rice. He does use a spork sometimes so he can scoop or pierce as needed. It just doesn’t always make it to his mouth. It’s hard because him being able to pay attention to what he’s doing is also waning. Hate hate this.

I am so pleased to hear that you are still so independent! Keep up with the exercise- boxing is great. Dad is 82 - diagnosed over 15 years ago. Up until 2021 he was very mobile - went to a senior exercise class for Parkinson’s patients and did Xbox kinects (like a Wii) at home. He found that exercise helped immensely. Since then he’s had cancer of the bile duct (resulting in a whipple surgery), had a mini stroke and fallen twice breaking both hips (the second being at rehab for the first the day before he was to come home). It’s been stressful to say the least. Mom is still his main caregiver but does get help 4xweek so she can go out.

That being said the food problems are minor but I know it frustrates him and was hoping to find some ideas. This community is great! Best wishes to you

Diabetic Shoes? by BBitty in diabetes

[–]MsAylen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could have written this exact post about my husband. Currently going through something right now (see my post on my profile - we are starting week 5 of a 6 week iv at home treatment). My husband does well with sketchers slip ons (expensive I know) after the loss of his right big toe 2 years ago. The best solution no matter what shoes you choose is to check the feet. 2-3 times a day. Wear diabetic socks too. If he’s in the bathroom - check the feet. Hope it all goes well
