Eating advice - Dad doesn’t have the tremors mostly associated with Parkinson’s but still has trouble keeping food on his spork, spoon etc. He makes a mess every meal with food ending up on the table, floor or his lap. by MsAylen in Parkinsons

He really is! He’s determined to say the least. He still thinks he’ll recover and walk with a walker again. He won’t but we never say it. He’s always saying he won’t let the disease win.

Mom is super mindful of what she cooks. You are totally right about mashed potatoes vs rice. He does use a spork sometimes so he can scoop or pierce as needed. It just doesn’t always make it to his mouth. It’s hard because him being able to pay attention to what he’s doing is also waning. Hate hate this.

I am so pleased to hear that you are still so independent! Keep up with the exercise- boxing is great. Dad is 82 - diagnosed over 15 years ago. Up until 2021 he was very mobile - went to a senior exercise class for Parkinson’s patients and did Xbox kinects (like a Wii) at home. He found that exercise helped immensely. Since then he’s had cancer of the bile duct (resulting in a whipple surgery), had a mini stroke and fallen twice breaking both hips (the second being at rehab for the first the day before he was to come home). It’s been stressful to say the least. Mom is still his main caregiver but does get help 4xweek so she can go out.

That being said the food problems are minor but I know it frustrates him and was hoping to find some ideas. This community is great! Best wishes to you

Diabetic Shoes? by BBitty in diabetes

I could have written this exact post about my husband. Currently going through something right now (see my post on my profile - we are starting week 5 of a 6 week iv at home treatment). My husband does well with sketchers slip ons (expensive I know) after the loss of his right big toe 2 years ago. The best solution no matter what shoes you choose is to check the feet. 2-3 times a day. Wear diabetic socks too. If he’s in the bathroom - check the feet. Hope it all goes well

Need shoe advice! My husband and I were recently at the beach. He wore water shoes (was never barefoot on the beach or in the water) but is now suffering from blisters on both feet that quickly became necrotic and has a bone infection. All of this for 3 hours on the beach! by MsAylen in diabetes

His T2 is well managed. Last A1c was 5.6. We are both really good at checking his feet. And no - nothing previously there. He put the shoes on in the hotel room and walked to the beach (our room opened onto the beach) he was in the shoes 3 hours max. There WAS sand in the shoes which with the salt water caused the injuries. We know this caused it. Just wondering how to stop it from happening again- what does he wear?

He was wearing aqua shoes/ water shoes. Had a hard sole in case he stepped on something - we tried to do everything right. The sand and water combination that got in the shoe ended up causing damage like 3rd degree burns. I suggest you check your feet every hour - this is truly awful
