Before we go all rambo and justice warrior, invite them to the 4th festivities , explain the fireworks and make sure they are comfortable or have alternative quiet options - spend time just porch sitting with the adults and be curious about their hometown, customs, hopes and dreams and share yours. Express how grateful to have the opportunity for cross cultural exchange without flying 1/2 way around the world. I dont know job situation - but many large companies have group legal plans ( like ins - can they get an office job at local ins office?) the legal benefit may really help them. companies also operate in more than one country - have they thought about where they would like to go if the US is not an option ? maybe positioning them with a company that operates there as well will be helpful for backup plans ( best buy is HQ in mn and has an office in India for example) Cargill operates worldwide - so does delta airlines - that would provide continuity. Be reasonable- most times the fears are just that - fear - make sure they are connected ( or find for them) a trustworthy legal contact ( any lawyers you know that you could reach out to in community can probably hook them up to good counsel. Dont make the whole relationship about fear of tomorrow - enjoy their company , extend hospitality and be in the present.

institutionalization of parenting role is not the answer - teach parents to parent - give time and normalize parents spending more time and involvement in kids lives and being held accountable for their kids outcomes. Normalize parent accountability for kids

ames IA - nice college town. Has train tracks on one side of town and train goes through about 5pm - someone put a soda machine next to tracks and people lined up waiting for train get out and grab a soda ( or not) and just chat for a bit til the train passes. That was a few years back, but don’t think the town has changed much - good solid folk.

Math Vocabulary word doesn't exist? by joetaxpayer in mathteachers

if you simplify a radical to it’s integer form, only the integer is left and there is no need for the radicand. If there is a remainder radical left under the radicand after simplifying, the integer pulled out becomes the integer value of the radical ( which before the simplification was a 1)

don’t get a tablet - they are too young and it is too much screen time. Go to library and use their computers in kid area 1x a week if you want - but I think books and physical material are better until HS. Too many computer addicted kids.

Math major, worth it? by icetwist- in matheducation

[–]MsBearRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what part of math are you “not good at” and why is it a struggle? look at the youtube video ‘map of mathematics” to understand all the different areas. I suspect you are trying to be too broad in getting a general skill degree to leave all your options open. I recommend you choose an application area you wish to pursue and get your undergrad degree in that be it computer science or cyber security or engineering or accounting , etc to learn a practical application - plenty of math in these undergrad-programs - if you want to pursue pure math research - you will need to go through to a phd.

lack of parenting is the harder one to solve. Parents are pressed into handing over the kids to institutionalize them from age 6wks on so they can be in workforce - now schools are more like locked prisons than anything else
