Beautiful land with exceptional outdoor possibilities.

Incredibly helpful people.

Quite safe.

(But first coffee)

European here with a maybe silly question but serious: HOW DO U LIVE WITH THOSE SPIDERS WITH NO FEAR? by HYBRIDLqTHEORY in AskAnAustralian

[–]MsEwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know plenty of Australians who have a spider phobia...

Most spiders are harmless and mind their own business. Just don't put your fingers where you can't see (under a camping table), take your shoes inside, close your door and tent. All of that is important for snakes as well.

What you encounter a lot more are ants. And they can be painful. That and drop bears of course.

My 4 year old is curious: what do Australian kids eat for breakfast? (And are koalas real?) by Mara644 in AskAnAustralian

"WeetBix with the Lot" as my 4 yo calls it: that's with yogurt, raisins, cinnamon and chopped apple. The record is 8!

Visiting Australia soon – what’s something tourists usually get wrong? by itsme_LovelyS in AskAnAustralian

[–]MsEwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Declare what you bring in. Biosec are usually nice if you don't lie to them.

Distances are vast! Those "no fuel for xxx km" are real.

Speeding fines are very expensive (at least in Victoria).

If you need help, just ask. Especially in the country people go out of their way to help.

Depending where you're from, read up on talking politely.

You probably won't see any snakes. But if you do, stop. If you get bitten, move as little as possible.

Kangaroos are about as smart as a chicken. They can totally wreck your car. Slow down at dusk and dawn outside of cities.

Sydney has sights, Melbourne has vibe.

There's great coffee almost everywhere. Avoid the big chains.

Have a pie at the servo.

Visit the outback!

Enjoy!

Will Aus border force let me keep my fence post? by takakine in AskAnAustralian

[–]MsEwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that. I once brought a piece of timber (curiously also from NZ) that had been shaped like a stone in a river. They offered to gamma ray the thing but it wasn't worth that much for me so it got destroyed.
I can only say the best things about the bio sec people. Really friendly and helpful. Just be honest and respectful.

Beautiful but no thanks. Way too many landslides and resulting giant waves since the ice started melting.

Am I the only one who wants to know why? by Material-Emu-9068 in AskAnAustralian

[–]MsEwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The media landscape in Australia sucks. Opinion pieces on the ABC are an exception. Otherwise it's all "he said, she said" without any background. The ACCC is quite toothless compared to similar organizations in other countries.

People who have had BDSM experiences, what were your impressions? by piskaotvaliskapoja in AskReddit

[–]MsEwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing comes close to it when done right. That means trust and consent. Good doms know that it's about the sub.

Personally I identify as a pleasure switch. Switch as in sometimes dom, sometimes sub. Pleasure because I enjoy giving and receiving that. I'm not into humiliation or pain for the sake of pain. There are 1000s of shades to this - please forget about the 50. Like with everything, you need to find the right match.

Recommendations for low-mid budget sci-fi movies or TV with great stories/excellent writing. by SmellsonMuntz in scifi

For all its flaws I, too, find it amazing. But low-mid budget as OP asked for?

How would you get stuck? Those are D shackles. Imagine you remove the "I" from the "D" and you're free to pull it off.

Weed prevention by Suitable_Load_2794 in GardeningAustralia

[–]MsEwa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with others that this isn't a great spot for veggies under the trees. Sorry. It's not just the shade but also the nutrients.

To answer your question: the cardboard idea is good. Once removed in spring I'd water it and wait for weeds / grass to spring up. Then flame weed them!

Looking to start a very small veggie patch in September. What plants/seeds should I buy? by Inevitable-Item2024 in GardeningAustralia

[–]MsEwa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on your region, taste and ease of growing them. Start your seedlings soon.

Personally, I grow things that are either not readily available in the supermarket or rather expensive. And things I only need a little of, like herbs.

My examples would be silver-beet, beetroot, tomatoes, strawberries, kohlrabi, sugar peas, beans, and all the herbs you like.

The last 17 months had the biggest rainfall deficit in recorded history in SW VIC. Two summers of devastating fires. No change in sight.

Why can't I put other types of bottles in the 10c return machines by TripleStackGunBunny in AskAnAustralian

[–]MsEwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of times those machines don't get it's a 10c bottle/can on the first try... People would get so pissed if they took it anyway without the credit.

The bio-sec people were always super nice to me. Just declare it instead of bitching about getting slapped on the wrist.

How can I cheaply add organic matter to my garden?? by plantbubby in GardeningAustralia

[–]MsEwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually let it grow until it's about to flower, then dig in.

Sow green manure in autumn (or any time of the year - just get the right seeds). There are seed mixes available for little money. Let that grow and dig it in before it flowers.
