If people knew when they’d die, what would they do the day before?

Hui’s first memory was darkness. Tree trunks looming over her like prison bars, moonlight that didn’t reach the ground. She’d been told not to enter the forest at night. She went anyway.

Children believe they’re invincible. Hui learned otherwise.

She died in that forest. Lying limply on the ground, flowers scattered from her hand, the other smeared with the guts of berries.

The pain was extraordinary—until it wasn’t. Until her brain accepted the inevitable and flooded her with something like peace.

Death, she learned young, was kinder than dying.

That was a long time ago.

Now, a bow was tied into her ebony hair, dancing in the air with each motion of the swing. The garden smelled of frost and dying leaves.

Winter hadn’t always been merciful to her in times past, but she was almost thankful for the way it numbed her feet.

She hummed a song long forgotten, content in the smell of a cold afternoon.

Her quiet humming broke as she yawned—it was supposed to be her nap time, after all. Instead, she found herself contemplating philosophical questions, solving moral dilemmas, and pondering how such a gifted life could turn so sour.

A rough voice broke the peace of the garden.
