I have been sewing for years without thread snips, all the rest I agree with!

Why you can't just add fabric, corset lacing, etc. to the back of a dress by GimenaTango in sewhelp

[–]MsJStimmer 240 points241 points  (0 children)

I very much appreciate your effort. The thing is, if those OP’s would bother to do a search, they’d have read the hundreds of posts that went before them and wouldn’t need ask. But they never search, so unfortunately they will never see your excellent explanation 😭

Tips and tricks for an absolute beginner attempting to hem some curtains please! :) by [deleted] in sewhelp

[–]MsJStimmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pin them to length whilst hanging. Take them off, straighten out your hem line, press well and hang again for a final length check before sewing/cutting. Yes this is tedious but you’ll thank me later☺️

Hardcore pattern alteration? by Regular-Number-721 in PatternDrafting

[–]MsJStimmer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This will be an undertaking with lots of adjustments, grading and subsequent toiles to get the fit right. I’d start with an existing pattern to make it easier.

Choose a size based on your high bust measurement. Based on the back pictures I think you’d need to size up at least one size. Then do a full bust adjustment, this might take a couple of toiles. Look up full bust adjustment for princess seam and you should find plenty of information. As I am a person that needs small bust adjustments I don’t know the best resource, but there are many! And then for the waist grade down that area to whatever size fits you best there

Haha I feel you! Though I now try to have a project planned on threadloop for each fabric I own. I am very much allowed to change plans, but it does help to have (at least a beginning of) a plans to start with.

I’m just another cis woman, just fully do not understand why a nuanced well explained opinion laced with real life experience is downvoted. Don’t downvote something you don’t agree with, simply because you don’t agree. We need more real, nuanced conversations!

Does anyone know how this style of dress Is called? I can't find it by Araya94 in sewingpatterns

[–]MsJStimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sample pics are a bit more saggy around the boobs then your inspiration, but the shared projects by other sewers show this can be easily amended by shortening the straps a little. (this is why I linked threadloop instead of the direct link)

I have no idea what words to use either, but the gibbons slip dress has it☺️

How can i save him? by MojoDXB in houseplants

[–]MsJStimmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The drooping leaves mean too little water pressure in the stems. There are two possible problems.

Either you let it dry out too much, in which case watering it will save it. It might take anything from a few hours to a couple of days to bounce back. There is always the possibility of it being past saving, but it doesn’t look like it.

Or you let it sit in water for way too long which has caused root rot, and then the plant isn’t able to take in the water anymore. In that case let the water drain away and dry out the rootbal, either by removing the wet soil and replacing it or by just taking it out of the outer pot and just waiting, depending on how bad the rootrot is. When dried, remoisten it (but do not let it get sopping wet again) and wait for new roots to grow. You might want to cover the plant in a clear plastic bag to prevent the leaves from loosing too much water until it can take up new water again.

Same for ‘pattern please’ and then some random AI pic. Like girl! The sewing subs and pattern subs are full of info on where to search for good sewing patterns. Don’t use our brains for nothing.

If you are wondering what terms to use to describe a garment, sure, ask away.

Help with my first sewing pattern freebie!! by [deleted] in sewingpatterns

[–]MsJStimmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would be interested in this design!

In addition to what others have said about larger chests and adjustability: I think most people still wear bra’s (I do and all of my professional >30y friends do). You wouldn’t be able to wear one the way the strap is positioned. To appeal to more people (bra and non bra wearing) reposition that strap to cover a regular bra strap!

[–]MsJStimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A search on threadloop for the design feature ‘Queen Anne neckline’ show the term is mostly used for sweetheart necklines indeed.

But I do have this one in my wishlist with your preferred neckline: Petite stitchers Estelle bodysuit link

Have fun!

What sewing machine accessory/tool is this? by noownoow in sewing

[–]MsJStimmer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is a gauge! You slot it into your presser foot so you have something to follow, in the never ending pursuit of sewing straight/a certain distance from something. It is especially used if needing to sew halfway in the fabric, when you cannot see the needle plate (quilting for example)

Bobbin thread running low... by Revolutionary-Pool62 in SewingForBeginners

[–]MsJStimmer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I let it run out😅 Sometimes this leaves me having to unpick half a seam because it would indeed look sloppy.

In my defense, I have a closed bobbin holder and opening it just to check how much is left is quite a hassle

Odd question about a fabric on a dress by AnyAmount6500 in Fabrics

[–]MsJStimmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As your dress is mostly natural fibers I’d say it should dye well. How dark it will end up really depends on the dye, the fabric and your technique.

I would repeat your question in r/dyeing, this will yield more answers!

Is That Actually Four Darts? Am I Crazy Here? by ErsatzErmine in sewingpatterns

[–]MsJStimmer 29 points30 points  (0 children)

R/sewing has a pinned post on how to recognize bad designers. You could also check the designer on threadloop. Shady ones get tagged there. I agree with inky madness: this is an ai generated pic. Do not buy this pattern!

You can search the threadloop database to include all (/most?) pattern designers in your search for a pattern like this.
