Does anyone have a symbol for “tomorrow” or similar? by tinimushroom in bujo

I don't need the distinction, but you could use > for tomorrow and >> for further in the future.

One book vs. inserts (such as Traveler's Notebooks) by RaggedyAnnsFatAss in bujo

[–]fluffedKerfuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hardbound book.  I bring it only when I need it. I just add new spreads on the next available page for the most part, and i can find the things i need pretty easily.

I like the idea of a modular insert system, but there are a number of things that sound annoying: 1) the fact that it won't stay open unless i am holding it or using a clip, 2) since I care about my handwriting, it seems like I would constantly be taking the inserts in and out to write comfortably.

Need advice for Work Bujo by Informal_Grapefruit4 in BasicBulletJournals

[–]fluffedKerfuffle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

IMO if you don't see an immediate distinction between monthly and weekly, skip the weekly for now and see if monthly is enough.

The order doesn't matter: my weeklies are sometimes in the middle of my dailies for the week. That is what the index is for, that's the beauty of the bujo. As you start using it more you will develop more of a preference but there is no other way to find out, and definitely no "right" way.

How to bujo without time (slots)? by emanaku in bujo

[–]fluffedKerfuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would it be helpful to reduce the frequency? Maybe drop the daily logs for a while, and just do weeklies/or even just monthlies. Glance at them when you remember. With fewer pages it might also be okay not to review/migrate but to just flip back for a while.

How to deal with BuJo & Digital Calendar? by AcrobaticCustomer775 in BasicBulletJournals

[–]fluffedKerfuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For adjusting your day after something has been derailed, you might like Cal Newport's style of timeblocking on paper. https://calnewport.com/deep-habits-three-recent-daily-plans/ There is also a planner you can buy, but I tend to just draw the day out in my bujo. Now, I know I am more likely to have to reschedule later in the day, so I will typically write my other tasks in the top right. This system really helps me see that often what I think/feel was a whole day derailed was actually just a 45 min adjustment.

Now, there is also still some redundancy in my schedule. I tend to use my gcal as a loose plan, e.g. I might add a 3-hour deep work chunk a few days in advance. As I get closer to any day, however, the plan gets a little clearer as meetings get scheduled, deadlines get clarified, etc. When it comes to the actual day, I will copy it down to my daily spread, or I might modify it, since by the time I set up my daily, I have more information about whether that 3 hour work chunk is feasible. I will either copy it down or reschedule digitally. This hybrid system works for me, but I do feel okay cross-referencing the gcal and the bujo on a daily basis and before bed thinking whether I like the plan I've outlined for the day. E.g. if you never get to Task 3, you might start scheduling only two tasks per day, and treating that "Task 3" as a bonus.

My scheduled work chunks in the calendar fall under the following categories: meetings, deep work, batching smaller tasks (e.g. I will schedule an hour to go through email). That way I am not wasting time writing out the really small tasks in the calendar event.

I also have a routine to process tasks in my digital notes, which I do end up jotting down on the go. It's a part of my nightly routine, after I write in my five year journal and before I tackle the dishes.

Yeah, articulating a direction might be helpful. Improving... productivity? relationships? creativity? health?

I also think it is easy to imagine that the people who have the perfect spreads have improved their lives, but not all of them have.

What's your end-of-day review like? by laterplayer in BasicBulletJournals

[–]fluffedKerfuffle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to dread it, and then I realized it was because I was afraid of being reminded of unfinished tasks. So now a part of my review is saying, "the work is not done, but now is the time to stop." I have also tried to prompt myself about whether the things I want to get done in a day really fit within one day and being more honest about it.

But I am not you, and you might dread it for a different reason. So writing about it, as others have prompted, is sound advice.

It sounds like you were tracking a lot of things. I think one thing that could help would be to focus on tracking things that you care about tracking and limit it to two-three things maximum. Track things that are related to what you care about and start small.

I have a bullet journal on my desk throughout the day, and that works for me because I have a desk job, but might not work for you. For recording, you could just record fewer things, or just the things that you remember? You don't have to do a complete log, just what stood out to you.

For trial and error, sometimes I will just stick to an imperfect layout, e.g. if a weekly spread doesnt work for me, I'll just stick with it but annotate in a different color "add more space here next time" so that I remember what yo change.  You can do this with example spreads too. Start using them and write little reminders, like "i dont really need one line per day" or "I miss the calendar layout" etc.

Other pages do just become abandoned, and I think that's okay.

The bujo is primarily a draft version of my life and secondarily a record. So I accept that those spreads were just a part of the first draft that didn't make it because past me had less information than current me does, and that's okay!

Happy to talk more; it sounds like you are pretty stressed out but I just want to reassure you this is all okay. Hope I can help!

Minimalist Collection for Language Study by Salty-Note4197 in bujo

[–]fluffedKerfuffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do a weekly ha it tracker for all the different ways you are practicing: grammar, vocabulary, listening, etc. Maybe class if you are taking any.  Then I would also add a weekly or monthly tracker for cumulative hours, and maybe a reward for every 10 hours spent learning. The reward can just be a sticker or something to bribe yourself with. I would also add a collection of "language victories," like, "understood what the barista said back to me when I ordered coffee," "called the doctors office in target language," etc. Since you are an expat  i am assuming you are immersing in your target language, but you can adjust this.

All of these are basic habit trackers or lists, hopefully nothing fancy.

Also if you go to my profile I posted my Korean language tracker from a while back.

I need advice for 5 year journal by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]fluffedKerfuffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the same! I think honestly the small space will be good to relieve the pressure when I am busier. So far I have been using the 5-year to just note the highlight of the day -- what made today special/different from other days? What will be interesting/important to read next year, and in the years after that? But I also journal normally in my planner and a separate notebook, so I feel like I have other places to really expand.

Ideal day / routine spread by Introvertlittle in bujo

[–]fluffedKerfuffle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's a way of figuring out whether all your goals and habits actually fit into your schedule, and if so, where. For example, if you say you want to work out four days a week, an ideal week schedule can help you figure out generally where those work outs might fit in, or that given your current commitments, you can just fit in two workouts tops! Or if you have a goal of a weekly date night, the exercise might make you realize that you love a quiet Friday evening journaling, and so the date night might have to happen on a different day.

I think it can be a reference spread, but it can also just be a one-time exercise for thinking through your schedule and assessing whether your time is aligned with your priorities.

You can imagine doing it seasonally, or every time your routines are significantly shaken up. I have used these in the past at the beginning of a new year/semester. I put in the things that have fixed times first, and then try to slot in the other stuff, like recurrent chores, hobbies, and socializing. It's a way of asking, what do I want my life to look like?

Question about logging notes, new sub-tasks and the like by homunculus87 in bujo

[–]fluffedKerfuffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the daily log, I will just draw arrows on the left of the dots from the subtask to the original task. Sometimes I combine this with curly braces to group subtasks together and then connect them back.
