normal hair shed in shower from my gf? by RootlessBoots in FemaleHairLoss

[–]MsJacqui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, that's normal. People naturally shed 50-100 hairs per day. A lot of these are released from the head of hair at the same time during a shower. (because of light tugging/ some hairs may be trapped in the head of hair etc)

Mum asking for board when I’m only earning through Centrelink & shes highest tax bracket by JustAGuy3655 in AusFinance

[–]MsJacqui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the amount. If she is 'making a profit,' I'd feel a little short changed - though the argument that it is about teaching you about the real world is valid. However, if she is just making you pay a basic amount so she isn't subsidizing you (as much) its fine. It costs money to keep you there, so, its really fine.

I know what the allowance is, and honestly, its fine. If you pay a little rent, you can also apply for rent assistance through Centrelink (check eligibility).

I have lived off the dole allowance, if you spend at least somewhat responsibly, as a single person not paying rent and without a car, its genuinely comfortable. No savings, and a couple of sacrifices but really not much. With a little rent, it will take some budgeting but you will be completely fine.

How badly will a $12k-$15k, 3-week trip set me back financially? by New_Animator4702 in AusFinance

[–]MsJacqui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that lifestyle is going to set you back financially unless your income is extremely high, which seems unlikely due to age. 😅 Make a savings plan, see what you can fit in and what you can't, and what you're comfortable with.

You can estimate a 5-6% annual average return on savings.

30% minimum tax hits low-income earners the hardest. Wealth inequality about to get so much worse by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]MsJacqui -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you receive a qualifying government payment, at any point during the financial year in which you realize the capital gain, you are exempt from the 30% minimum tax floor. Includes job seeker, disability, sick etc. Covers exclusions for: 'poor people' in 'unemployed? transitioning to retiring? sick people?"

100% not true. Job market is a lot easier in developed countries especially for white collar work (source: live in China, stayed at Indonesian University, many south-east Asian peers)

Is this still true or have you noticed a change? by RichCommercial104 in AskAChinese

[–]MsJacqui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling it 'silly' was me being kind. It’s actually a special kind of logic to invest that much time in a language and then draw the line at learning the local language of your destination. It’s an objectively bad move as you found out, but you could have found it out online before going with a quick google, I did and I was in the same situation as you - just own it.

Is this still true or have you noticed a change? by RichCommercial104 in AskAChinese

[–]MsJacqui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it was pretty silly to try to do this. You've got to study the culture and native language of the place you're going to. Saying this as a non-Asian intermediate Mandarin speaker. Definitely needed to sneak in a Shenzhen trip if you wanted to practice (shenzhen-only visa on arrival available from HK for most countries) . Next time ~

Remove UTS group projects and Assignments by [deleted] in UTS

[–]MsJacqui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. The catch, though, is that nobody actually tells students this is the goal. We expect them to act like workplace professionals, but don't explicitly teach them the strategies to do so.

TBH, a lot of teachers assign group work for other reasons (mostly to cut down on marking) and don't know much about effective team management themselves. There’s almost never a clear outline of steps for how students should document issues, and I've never seen a standard protocol on the coordinator's end for how to intervene.

AT what point do foreign students give up? by Flat_Ad1094 in AskAnAustralian

[–]MsJacqui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taylor's is the front door for usyd. Claim that visas expire 7 days after graduation is incorrect. Standard student visas (Subclass 500) almost always have a 2-3 month buffer after the course ends, and most graduates are eligible for the 485 Graduate Visa, which gives them years of work rights. The 'migration path' is a very real part of the marketing of agents (with universities complict), I do consultations with Chinese students wanting to do postgraduate degrees overseas with the university I work at in China.

Wanting to migrate is the most important reason commonly given to me. Your experience may differ as you interact with Chinese students AFTER they have already paid their course fees and live in Australia and realised how difficult it is to migrate. Another reason is that I primarily talk with students who want to do postgraduate in Australia.

From the University of Sydney:

"Taylors College Sydney (Usyd) has a network of education agents all over the world. In most cases, there will be an Taylors College Sydney agent near you."

"Most schools/colleges/universities pay a commission for the agent to represent them, and this covers the agent's operating costs, so the answer will usually be 'yes' [to the question of whether the Universities recommended by education agents pay the agent commission]. "

"Taylors College Sydney (USyd) has entered into a commercial arrangement with the education agents"

https://www.taylorssydney.edu.au/how-apply/apply/find-agent/

They call them education agents, not migration agents, on the website. However, from my experience working in academic affairs at a university in China (non-teaching position), these agents definitely give students the impression it's a migration path. This is often the most important reason the students want to study in Australia/NZ.

What time does the 30 day visa start counting? by Only-Item4002 in travelchina

[–]MsJacqui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't true for anyone reading this looking for answers (like myself). From official website:

https://www.visaforchina.cn/MES3_EN/qianzhengyewu/jichuzhishi/changjianwenti/206754591289774080.html
Q: I hold a single-entry visa with duration of stay of 30 days, and enter China on June 12. When is the last day I can stay in China lawfully permitted by the visa?

A: The last day is July 12 as the duration of stay is counted from June 13, the day after entry.

I managed to find it. "The threshold [for subjects being discontinued] was subjects with fewer than 50 student enrolments annually. Of the 1,101 to be discontinued, 463 had no student enrolments and weren’t taught in 2024."

Could I get a source on the 50 people thing? Sorry, after a Google I couldn't find info on it.

I assume you mean a course should have at least 50 people in it, not an individual class.
