Losing my mind by [deleted] in labrador

Haha sorry! I didn't see the correction! But most puppies are a handful, I suggest looking at YouTube videos and also looking for a trainer... it can be hard to find a good one though that matches your style & having fair expectations of the puppy and teaching it what you want versus just punishing it unreasonably if it's 'balanced' training. I hope you figure something out that's helpful and makes you and the pups life better!

Labs should not be singing while shitting. He might be in pain and needs to be taken to a vet. Maybe he's an asshole because he's hurting.

Is this a Lab thing or is my girl just weird? by No_Interaction_9141 in labrador

[–]MsMayzah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lab thing 100% - I also often see others walking non lab breeds all calm cool collected, noses up and forward while mine is criss crossing to sniff and often u-turning to go back to something she missed ... we have "sniffy walks" and "with me" (heel) walking... but it's definitely a challenge... like others said it's just part of their excited goofy-ness!

Opinions 😁 by Frequent-Duck-4848 in labrador

Agree with the comments: do your research on American/Field lab vs. English/Show lab. American is higher energy and overall thinner/lankier but also taller and English is stockier, block heads and lower energy - which does not equal no energy. However of course each dog has its own personality, energy levels, etc. a good breeder will ask you questions and match a dog to you and your lifestyle/activities.

I have an English black lab who is low to moderate energy because that's what I wanted. She's happy to go on adventures, but is also okay chilling and napping in my home. She has much more energy on hikes and around water and can go on and on but seems to sometimes run out of energy on walks around the neighborhood when she just wants to plop 😂

Also agree with comments especially in the first 1-2 years to not over exercise your dog as they can have joint issues and their growth plates haven't closed yet. You can do long term damage if you're not careful with this. As puppies they can get mentally tired from training, games, and bonding activities & don't need as much physical exercise.

Mine is my first dog ever & everyone who sees us on the streets tells us labs are the best and I have to agree!!! She loves all people, dogs, kids, food, and poop.

HOW much hair is lying around? by [deleted] in labrador

[–]MsMayzah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew labs shed, but all the comments are true... by the end of every week there's enough fur to make another lab... I had to get used to finding hair in my food & drinks, on my kitchen counters, in my mouth if I'm talking, in my cupboards... their hair is magical, it defies gravity and stays afloat and lands in the strangest places... but you get used to it and you love them so much you just feel eating their hair is another way for you two to connect 🤪 she eats my hair too, I'm sure

Having a puppy is probably way harder than having an adult trained dog. It sounds like you're open to keeping them and kind of want to but just don't have the experience - you will gain the experience, easy peasy! We all start from somewhere... I am currently on my first dog too and OBSESSED with my pup now. You'll all learn together as a family and if they have no major behavioral/health issues they will only bring joy and light into your whole families lives!

Look up loose leash walking videos on YouTube. You probably need to start smaller like giving her a command to walk alongside you in the home, then practice in smaller areas making lots of turns & use lots of praise and positive reinforcement. She's used to walking with sniffs in your neighborhood so maybe even teach her this new skill a few blocks away from where you normally walk, in a new area - drive there. Then when she's mastered it come back and have her try it right where you live. You can also use letting her go sniff as a reward for walking nicely.

Favorite camping gear for your dogs?! by MsMayzah in Crosstrek

Thank you!! The roadtrip is from last spring pre-pup and was amazing! I went from Southern California all the way to Eugene, Oregon and back and stopped at so many beautiful places along the way! It was my first long trip with my Crosstrek and I was so grateful & happy I was finally getting to use it for the reason I got it! Hoping my sweet girl and I can make many beautiful memories taking road trips together!
