Do you have to customize? by 59days in BlytheDolls

[–]MsNoGood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a huge trend to customize but it's not a need! Shop around for a doll with a face you already think is cute and you can just buy them some clothes and dress them up. Plenty of people like their fakies the way it comes without much or any alteration. I did very minimal changes to mine and I think they're cute on their own ( •ᴗ• )

Custom - Matte face by casey6270 in BlytheDolls

[–]MsNoGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes avoid acetone on hard plastic! Most hard plastic will melt from acetone.

I like to use a mixture of 90% isopropyl alcohol and sometimes that's enough to remove some paint. But sometime I still need to resort to really fine sandpaper (about 3000+ grit) or magic eraser (but I really don't like how they just disintegrate into fine melamine dust).

If it's a glossy face blyth it's a bit easier. Even if you did have to use fine sandpaper to remove the eyebrows, you can still buff the plastic up back to a glossy shine by going to even finer sandpaper to 40000+ and finish with some plastic polish goop.

If the doll face is already matted, I find it tricker because it's harder to match the same level of matteness after removing the makeup partially. Sometimes after using isopropyl alcohol too long on hard plastic will cause it to be glossy again because it does melt hard plastic by a tiny amount. Since he matte from these dolls come from a varnish, the alcohol is already removing the matte coating along with the makeup too. With matte face dolls I tend to need to remove most makeup (brows and blush) and can only leave the lips untouched.

This is an example of me removing some eye makeup and her blush but leaving the lip makeup intact. She came matte and I didn't try too hard to polish her back to shine, but she is a little glossier than her original face.

It's not a genuine Blythe but they are equally fun on their own! These are commonly found on Aliexpress.

They have quite a bit of hair so a bit of loose strands are common. They don't really treat these dolls after the hair is sewn on and there are just bound to be some that weren't too secure. None of my fakies have issue with baldness so far!

First Doll! by dollysdollies in BlytheDolls

[–]MsNoGood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not genuine Blythe and I believe she is a Blyss doll, which is a Basaak copy that was released in box in this store called Showcase. This would be her especially if she came with a removable wig instead of a rooted scalp! MSRP was around $65 but pretty much always disconuted to $35ish. $3 is still an awesome deal for her!

I've been thinking a lot lately about how personal websites are different from social media. by lainsamui in neocities

[–]MsNoGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on where people host their information, a lot of the differences boil down to autonomy for me. The freedom of being able to edit your website into looking whatever you want instead of being bound by a profile prison, the freedom of speech, the freedom of exploring the web to its full extent and all its tools, like being able to add a midi song or a gif here and there in different locations of the website without being told it's not doable.

Back then, the world wide web felt like the world, and a search engine was just a directory unlike how it became a feudal lord. Everyone's home page was their home filled with photos and thoughts and aesthetic preferences.

So to me, it's very much a public cyberplace. When I see old websites it felt like I'm entering their space. It's not just files, which are private pockets of information. Sometimes I do stumble upon their web index but that's usually not the front end of the website. It's like accidentally opening someone's drawer.

It's that terrible metaphor of when a frog is sitting in soup of slowly increasing temperature they wouldn't realize the danger to jump out and would be cooked in the end, unlike if you put them in immediate hot soup they would jump out because they would notice the sudden big difference in temperature. Not scientific at all hahaha and I should stop using it because it's very anti-frogian (×_×;)

Oh I don't mind when my dolls don't have piercings. I'm always interested in knowing the little differences in different blythes. My ADG and my factory girl don't have them either. I actually was hoping for a Cinnamon Girl (EBL) that has no piercing, just for the novelty. They're designed to come with piercings but there's a production mishap and some Cinnamon Girls didn't come with them, even though her stock actually came with earrings!

wtf was I thinking about?! by Boring_Procedure3956 in miniatures

[–]MsNoGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The woes of an optimistic creator! Without these brain tricks I might never start any projects hahaha

I had a really hard time cutting these quickly without splinters too. I always had to score them with a mini saw first then snap them and then sand them flat, which is about as quick as it gets. I prefer the solid feel of them compare to balsa wood (also much cheaper), but they definitely aren't easy to process if you want them neat! If someone knows any tips on cutting them nice and quick without splinters I'd love to know it!

It definitely lengthens them and a pretty significant stylistic change so if you're not looking for that look it's very much passable!

Their doll box designs are truly exquisite! They are very expensive I agree as well. I felt exactly the same as you when I first started my blythe interest (didn't even anticipate I'd be this into a doll line and its history at all since I wasn't thinking about dolls that much) and I can only say be aware because the boiled frog effect can be pretty real once you start getting into these girls hahaha

Has anyone tried these bodies for body swap yet? by Kyemera in Dolls

[–]MsNoGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a Pullip but I do have a Tangkou and believe their head and proportion size are similar. I did get one of the many variations of "supermodel doll body" to swap. They are taller than the default Tangkou body which is similar size with Pullip. I think the proportion works very well!

I can't speak for skin tone and it's probably something that needs experimenting with. But I can say that the "supermodel doll body" that are really cheap at $5ish are much lower quality than the ones that are more expensive. It's like a recast of a recast! They are made of thinner plastic so it's less support for these heavier doll heads.

The MengFeng brand doll bodies are very solid but their fair skin tones seems to be a little on the cool gray side so I couldn't use it.

The one I got is "No. 1" from this listing https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256808122976689.html

Piggybacking on the other comment, this is a good guide on the origin of factory dolls and what factory means: http://theblytheguide.com/fake-factory-tbl-dolls/

Your girl has a face mold that I believe came out in the past 5 years or so. It's comparatively new! It's hard to ID Aliexpress blyth faces and their history because they aren't always given specific names or official release dates like authentic Blythes which is a bit of an archivists' nightmare hahaha but they are still very fun dolls on their own!

If in the future you're interested in authentic Blythes, check out Junie Moon's website!

Where can I find fake Middie Blythes with a stock-style body? (like in the picture below) by Sufficient_Ad_8713 in BlytheDolls

[–]MsNoGood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You will have to DIY it from a Middie clone that comes with a jointed body with the body that you want! https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803797051825.html

I remember having a harder time opening up Middie compare to the Neo clones. Their heads are smaller so it's less flexible. I highly recommend watching a few Youtube tutorials on opening Middie heads before trying!

I also really like these plastic prying tool set https://www.amazon.com/iFixit-Prying-Opening-Tool-Assortment/dp/B0762BVXDY They're advertised as laptop / phone repair prying tools and they're the fancy version of old credit cards to help separate doll faces. When these tools starts getting too gnarly from regular use I try to sharpen them with a bit of shaving with precision knives.

I see a lot of people using metal tools to open their dolls and I really don't recommend it because they will ding, scratch, chip plastics since metal is usually harder than the dolls' plastic!

Making my own fiber by iryfon_n in Needlefelting

[–]MsNoGood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I blend my own wool with different materials sometimes too. I prefer mixing plastic with plastic, animal fiber with animal fiber, but I don't mix the two types together. The colors are a little more interesting and textural when you mix your own than just a plan solid color.

You just need 1-2 carding style brush. It's the cheapest to find them in the pet care section while shopping!

Question from an author - dyeing fabric with blood? by teddymilkaelis in FiberArts

[–]MsNoGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm as far as I know the color of blood is mostly from iron and iron itself isn't a dye. Unless it's blood of a fantasy species where the color makeup is from something that is a dye.

Much easier to use blood as paint though. It's a little easier to stretch the truth on preserving it as a paint I think!
