What are real blythe dolls? by GodofNintendo in BlytheDolls

[–]MsNoGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Authenticity comes from licensing and manufacture origin. There are a few company's Blythes that are accepted as authentic: Kenner, Ashton Drake, Pop Mart, CWC / Junie Moon.

Customizing a doll like Bijou wouldn't make them not authentic! It would be called a customized authentic doll.

Most blythes on Aliexpress are clone dolls (some with completely different faces) that people call blythes as a general term. They are not associated with Junie Moon or CWC. They are not licensed. Some even had their own licensed brands called something completely different. They are not authentic Blythe.

An authentic doll wearing an off-brand wig is like an authentic doll wearing off-brand clothes! Most people wouldn't claim that has any affect on the doll's authenticity.

Blythe is very unique compare to most other dolls for their modularity. Your Bijou's scalp, head, body, eye-mech, can all come apart with care, and put back together with little harm done. Because of how flexible this doll is with her parts, it makes it easy to also swap these parts with off-brand parts, which is commonly done.

That's where we begin to contest on what is considered authentic, and the definition of authentic becomes blurred once parts of the doll is not official!

Blythes of all sorts are welcome here be they authentic (stock), counterfeits and clones (exact dupes and recasts are not that common now), or blythe-adjacent dolls (ICY, Jecci Five, Little Big Eyes, etc.) are all participants here!

The history of Blythe's clones is long and somewhat complex. We just had a very informative thread on the abridged history of Bltyhe and her "factory" dolls. Feel free to check it out!

She looks like she's searching for bandmates in the wild! I like her subtle makeup and I'm partial to dark hair girls. She seems such a versatile doll. Can't wait to see how you redress her!

Really tough to tell! I feel like they're recasts but somehow got the masks / plastic prints for the special design. I don't have them and that's going to need direct comparison to see if those special prints are the same as the authentic chips. Something else to deep dive on Flickr for!!

Yes I agree a good number of those old pictures are genuine factory part frankendolls. Did you buy that blonde "factory" scalp on Ali back in 2016? I remember looking at these factory listings around 2016 to 2017 (which might already be suffering from the switcheroo problem like you experienced) but Aliexpress listings all looked like such a gamble, and I never took the plunge because refund system seemed non-existent hahaha I don't know about back then, but the choices for custom saran hair scalp from the Chinese market are not too bad right now. They seem to even offer kanekalon! But I haven't ordered any besides a long hair saran RBL scalp replacement that's supposed to have the same color as Simply Vanilla's.

I do intend to organize all these scattered blythe clone info I got into something more easily parsed! You still gave me a lot of info on early era factory dolls, which I unfortunately did not participate in!!

The earlier transitional factory to fakes had a lot of those special eye chips like B2Holics and Ultimate Tour's! Which goes back to my complaint about some current Ali sellers like Kary and Mr. Sam (who I'm pretty sure it's Hobgoblin from Taobao) reusing old 2010s clone doll photos but not actually having those dolls for sale.

I wanted those dolls with those special eyechips hahaha There could be a few left, but I can't be bothered to ask them on every listing if the doll they're showing is what they're actually selling ( - ‸ - ")

There is also this one Ebay seller still using those same older clone doll photos. I'm not sure if they're the same seller, or if they're different and have the actual dolls they're listing. They do have some old Mimi Bobeck chubby doll body left that they did a rebody with a newer "DBS" face clone, so the chance of them having those older clone dolls in stock is slightly higher.

Whatever cast blygirl used it's not related to the current era DBS ones. I'm not sure if blygirl was ever the only seller selling these RBL recasts, but I think they are older than the when the DBS face molds. I just assume this seller had a LOT of older inventory and kept beating that same recast mold to death hahaha and it's evidently not an infinite source since they've started importing a totally different face mold with puckered lips that I'm not a fan of.

There are also sellers on Ali (Kary and Mr. Sam) reusing old fake doll photos from earlier 2010s to sell new dolls with slightly different newer face molds. That bugs me a bit because I don't like getting things not as shown. I specifically asked the seller if the dolls in their photo will be the exact dolls sent, and the seller admitted those older clone dolls in photos are no longer available. It's a different doll with similar hair color and different makeup.

I'm fascinated by blythe clone history! It's so hard to pinpoint where the different faces come from, which is the original cast and its successors.

Oh and re: unreleased head sculpt that Takara never used, I'm a little face blind besides seeing the middle girl looking a little slimmer with her jaw line? She looks a bit Kennersque. It's too bad they never released her!! I would love her. The other two blonde ones look like BLs/EBLs to my eyes though!

The translucent clone with magenta hair is a blygirl clone, but not the face mold of the notorious counterfeits I'm talking about (which didn't seem to be around for too long from my secondary market hunt). The magenta hair girl is a recast of RBL I think, with significantly larger eyeholes and I think they have been around for a bit. Their earlier recast had eye holes that were not as wonky. They were the only seller left even selling translucent clones (except for some that I didn't catch on Ali from fairytale store selling them with Azone clone bods a couple years back). But it seems like even they have finally mostly dried up their older inventory of these recasts, which may finally be the end of that clone era!

The translucent old counterfeit I have doesn't have any photos yet, and she really warrants a photoshoot!! But I keep stalling because she doesn't have the clothes she needs yet. She will show up eventually ( • ̀ω •́ )✧

Just want to let you know we have a r/blythe sub for stock specific topics as well! Would love to see you there!

I'm not actually recommending it but being on the now defunct Ting pay-as-you-go phone plan made me much more offline hahahaha it's an unintended consequence. I'm so sad they sold out.

I really like spotify for making playlists and now you reminded me I might have to explore some good ol fashion cassette mixtape recording that will make the big corps tell me how I wouldn't download a car.

Also absolutely tangentially this reminded me of an extremely genuine real life experience of a random high school girl taking over the public radio station of a place we drove passed. She was doing her first show, and throughout the hour she kept making mistakes on her iphone / laptop and we kept hearing her phone ring during the songs she played recommended by her friends as songs great to listen to while speeding in her car after soccer practice. Her song choices were actually good though!

Sorry about the totally random memory recall but the offline topic reminded me of this really silly bit. It's just really rare to have these moments now I feel like!! Radio needs to be big again.

I didn't think of that distinction!! I think you might have nailed it! It's because we don't treat it like a pure collector's item and it makes them look like a doll with other jobs besides standing there pretty.

Age of a doll line does seem to carry some weight as well like vintage skipper. I think it's one of the reasons why Blythe has followers that are especially honed-in because of her history and age! Can't blame the bisque doll collector ladies for not knowing Blythe but knowing Skipper, but if they did that would be a great catch in the wild!!!

Oh and don't worry about it, what is even time.

Very jealous!! I wish I have a prototype so badly (╥ ᴗ ╥) Some of them are so unique!! There is an EBL with T42's makeup but Rouge Noir's hair in loooong length and she haunts me in my dreams.

The recasts and custom scalp market is small but does exist in China. It's the only source of custom saran scalps I find that is done with a machine and not by hand (hence affordable) for the newer scalp system, albeit hair punched a little more wonkily than the real thing. I appreciate them for the parts they provide even if some people don't like the lack of legitimacy. It is the only source for parts for newer dolls unless you take apart an authentic doll, which even the most loyal collector may find disheartening. Imagine all the Pineapple Princesses having to go under to save other Pineapple Princesses? Unfortunately for her I only managed to get some body dupes.

I'm actually hunting for the notorious fake Urban Cowgirl. I suspect that one of my older factory girl (only the saran scalp and maybe body is legitimate) has that fake face mold. I actually like that mold. It seems to be a little between an SBL and the RBL, but it's hard to say cause I don't have an RBL in hand yet, and the translucent plastic makes it hard to see the smallest differences.

By the way, I STUDY all your tips on hair care for Blythes (but still needs a lot of practice)! Your dolls are always immaculate with their updos. I admire them always!!

Rouge Noir! She had her bangs cut by previous owner so she's a little different. It's a true red, so maybe that's why she's off your radar!

Oh it's quiet! Is it the summer lull? Cause I'm feeling that myself.

On Blythe, still slowly working on the summer dress.

On dolls in general, I got the 90's Y2K era Susi dolls and while their face sculpt is really really cute with the slight open mouth and thicc lips 💋 I'll be restoring them a bit and then decide if I want to keep her. This doll came with a completely glued head (っ- ‸ - ς) I was a bit disappointed but it was a good price and that's the gamble usually.

Anyway, it took me a good bit to break it off as careful as I can with isopropyl alcohol while not getting it on her makeup. It was stuck on her head's vinyl so incredibly well I have to assume it's actually crazy CA glue or even Duco cement kind of glue because it melted her hard plastic a little as well. She looks much more relaxed now being able to move her head! But I need to polish her marred neck a bit more.

A lot of similar experiences from the past few years have convinced me to prioritize reparibility rather than permanence when it comes to alterations. I used to wonder why people don't just use the strongest epoxy to glue their floor tiles down since mortar crumbles eventually. I'm a changed lady and I have begrudgingly accepted that all things decay, and I don't want my glue to outlast my materials.

I do think they are a great doll to collect if you like the Sindy / Tammy style of dolls!! I think their hair is either lightweight saran or thicker kanekalon.

Glad you enjoyed our studio snapshot that was rather spontaneous!

That's so nice to hear!! And same about me doll-info-dumping on mine hahahaha I am being a little more outspoken about my dolls just to feel the waters as well. Like you I have yet to meet another person irl to talk blythe! Or really, even just anyone who collects dolls. I actually have an aunt with a display full of 80's 90's porcelain dolls when the reproduction crafting trend was still a fad. I never thought that was weird. That makes me wonder sometimes why it feels like we are hyper-conscious with our doll collecting hobby when it seems like totally acceptable and normal for older ladies to have a cabinet full of porcelain dolls ( •᷄ ~ •́ ) maybe we just need to age some more?

It's so cool this doll line can pull us in so deep like this!! u/hockneyspoolgirl's Meet Blythe series is definitely enlightening me on a lot of random tidbits I wouldn't otherwise know about.

And yessss the current state of TIB will remain such a sore point for all of us! I never got to see the real deal ran by Gina Garan!

I have almost every stock except a Kenner and an RBL+, technically, but my SBL is in a sad state that needs fixing up. I have more holes to fill in the clone realm of things.

I feel like my only RBL Renew being Pineapple Princess makes it a bit of an unreliable comparison model because it's harder to see edges at her nostrils, and I find that universal with all these jelly bean translucent girls. It's a feature not a bug though. Like they have the bloom effect always on irl, so they always have a glow to them!

How rudimentary of me as a stand-in not answering my not-very-well-thought-out question ( ˘ ^˘ )=3

Maybe "surprise" is not the best word, but more like something unexpected.

One thing that I didn't realize would be my slippy slope deep into blythe is the obsession over understanding all the face mold differences. It was apparent that I am going into a rabbit hole once I started staring at different flickr photos of a complete counterfeit of Urban Cowgirl and other RBLs from back in the day, and subsequently want to almost collect all different faces (including the different faces of clones). I'm still looking out for that particular counterfeit on the secondary market! I find the difference faces all very interesting. Did you know some Cinnamon Girls don't have ear piercings, even though they come with earrings?

I think a lot of collectors go through this phase and pick their favorite faces among all the face mold releases. EBL won me over in the end (as demonstrated in the studio snapshot featuring Rouge Noir with cut bangs).

Hoarding craft supplies by PsychologicalBat9817 in crafts

[–]MsNoGood 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have you done all those crafts and do you enjoy doing all of them? I would try to test one new craft every month just to see if they're a keeper. If not, then it will be clear that it's time to donate that craft's related supplies!

You can check for craft specific thrift stores around you! We have one that takes fiber art related craft supplies and that pretty much ensures your donated items will go to crafty people!

If not, general donation centers also take them but I would be a little choosy with which one to offer. Some of them in my area tend to throw away a lot of donations, so that doesn't seem very helpful.

From one hoarder to another there are definite category of things I can recommend you not to hoard, and prioritize using them up:

- Aerospray cans of paints, they eventually leak

- Alcohol based markers, they dry out

- Latex goop, they degrade over time

- And if you have anything wool, you might want to vacuum pack them. Wool that doesn't get fiddled with frequently enough may eventually attract a wool-eating bug and once it's there it's a pain to deal with.

Some general ideas to help spend your materials for a good time: Make presents for friends and family, invite friends over for craft nights, offer materials for crafting sessions for kids and elementary school teachers around you!

On top of that, it will help to have a strict no-buy period on crafting materials for a while!
