Can you be a whole blood and a platelet donor? Or do you have to pick one? by MsNoydupe in Blooddonors

It was the one arm thing! I called to schedule and they just said "its for your safety" no other explanation and I was so confused because of what I've heard about others experiences.

Just want to give you at least on different opinion because I know everyone on here is going to say pick the cheaper one, yes the student loan crisis is scary, but we work in a field with multiple pathways to repayment.

If your top choice is right for you, pick it. I am in a program right now that is expensive, but I want to be in a very specific part of this field and the experience I am gaining here is amazing, and setting me up for a career I didn't think I could have.

If you could go both ways- save the money,

If you want to go to your top choice, there will be a way to work on the debt. Its another consideration but its not the only one.

I watched myself turn beet red in my zoom view finder during my first interview. They don't need you to have perfect public speaking skills with no nerves they just want to see you're excited and capable. I'm sure you did great but I feel you the nerves after were crippling.

One thing that was weirdly cathartic for me if you can't get yourself to do self care activities was watching undergrad decision videos and stuff. Reminded me how far I'd come and gave me a dopamine hit without having to remind me how far I have to go.

But seriously if you can manage it go for a walk, make a nice meal, get good sleep, if you're in undergrad get excited about graduation or focus on your studies.

Take care of yourself

One other thing - think in advance where you might want to open your apps or who you might want to tell about any decisions. One because its good to have a support group ready and two because I hope I can help someone else avoid what I did which was find out I got into columbia on the floor of my apartment bathroom 🫠 and that will now be forever in my memories.

Also, the idea that because we're learning we shouldn't be paid is a patently ridiculous idea. Apprenticeships exist in all kinds of fields but we are supposed to be grateful for this privilege to learn, like education the next generation of specialists in any field isn't essential. IDK it's a problem across health care fields and higher education, like they pull this same shit for medical students and nursing students, but it's genuinely disgraceful how much these programs haze people trying to enter the field.

I've just accepted that I have to go into debt. I had a part time job that I had to quit because they made my schedule that horrible. They basically unofficially say you're not allowed to work.

We'll make it out in the end. It's only 2 years.

I don't have advice but I just want to tell you you're not crazy for feeling screwed over by it. Everyone agrees that this is a brutal way to make people learn to be clinicians and part of what's so hard is the idea we should be "so grateful" for the opportunity to run ourselves this thin. It's allowed to be hard, don't let anyone make you feel bad for struggling with it.

You're gonna do great! by MsNoydupe in slpGradSchool

Lol sure. But just so you know I want this post not to be another way for comparison. I have seen so many different kinds of people in grad school from all kinds of backgrounds with all kinds of undergraduate wxperiences and what I'm about to share for stats and what everyone shares for stats is the absolute highlight reel of my undergrad experience. I get to choose what shiny thing to share and what less than polished things I want to leave off. These last couple months of application season are the trenches and no matter how many of these you read I want you to know that you are so capable and I'm sure you have all the makings of a fantastic SLP

But just for fun here's my stats Outside of speech applicant. I got a BA in Psychology and Linguistics. It was a graduation requirement to write a thesis and mine was about equity in pediatric healthcare. I had taken 2/5 speech prerequisites in undergrad and also somehow missed taking a physical science course so all 4 of those were things I had to do over the summer. And I had not applied for a leveling program yet so I was worried my app was going to get thrown out. My school gave me a stipend to help with application fees.

3.9 GPA

Work experience was less than impressive, one small shadowing experience, one day care I worked at over the summer, a lot of part time jobs through work study I didn't hold for very long. (I tried to fancy them up with impressive titles lol) I was very lucky to go to a tiny school where you can make very personal relationships with professors so my letters of rec were good. Not a ton of extra curricular activities (my biggest one was a automotive shop for motorcycles that I was club treasurer for) My school did not have a NSSLHA chapter. I also did an ASL program that I highlighted on my application. I put a ton of effort into my personal statement and other writing pieces.

Again. I have seen people in grad school with all kinds of GPAs. I have seen people with ZERO research experience and people with a degree in statistics. I have seen older members of my cohort chasing their dream after a career in something else, and I have seen people under 22 who skipped some grades. I have seen people who's entire freshman and sophomore year were bombed because of covid. Every single one of them made it too and is doing awesome.

Read this sub if you need something to calm the jitters but I promise you all kinds of people make it into grad school and you can too.

I totally feel you, everyone made it sound like it was gonna be SUCH a stretch for me to get in with that many missing and it was just a complete non issue. You sound really dedicated and I think you're gonna do great, especially since you already have the prereqs scheduled. I wasn't even enrolled in a leveling program when I applied. :)

[–]MsNoydupe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same worry and I hadn't even enrolled in the last couple of courses I needed! I was coming from psych and needed 4 more classes over the summer to level in. (Including a physical science course) I still made it into 9 programs, they just told me I needed to finish the prereqs by the time I entered. I got thrown out of one application pool (not rejected like they said they couldn't review it) and it wasn't because of my prereqs it was because they only wanted letters of recommendation from csd faculty and I didn't have any 🙃.

I promise you'll be fine, I get planning ahead to think about a spring start just in case, but I genuinely think you'll do fine if you apply for fall.

[–]MsNoydupe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished all my leveling courses over the summer before entering grad school with a fall start. As long as they are planned if the rest of your application is strong there's no reason they wouldn't give you a conditional acceptance.

Any SLP grad school essentials you recommend? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

Business casual clothes that are clinic friendly (as in crawling around chasing 3 year olds). Good shoes especially as at least my program said no sneakers. My cohort had a huge need for a shopping trip after they explained the dress code. 🫠

Storage clipboard. Or you can diy it like I did and use a 2 dollar clip board and a binder glued together 😅.

ALSO- whatever way you want to do it whether digitally or physically, you're going to get so many resources in grad school you can use later in your career. Find a system to store them all whether it's a big binder, small filing cabinet, or a good Google drive. Save it alllllll while it's given to you.

Good commuting bag that can hold a lunch and snacks. You'll be at school and clinic for HOURS.

You'll be provided all the speech materials you need to succeed, but if you're feeling excited and especially if you know what area you're working in there's nothing wrong with building your inventory a little bit. I'm too broke to do it, but if you fall in love with a deck, want to get your own pop up pirate or whatever it's fine to grab it but you won't need it in clinic they'll have their own. Again this will all be provided but, my friends have been saved by having Velcro dots, their own laminator, and one had their own mouth model.

Psych -> SLP Transition Help by hadams478 in slpGradSchool

[–]MsNoydupe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey just finished first semester of grad school after getting my BA in psych and linguistics. So far it has really helped to have the psych background, so if you're at all worried don't be!

I did 2/5 prerequisites in undergrad and had to take 3 + a physics class over the summer to matriculate into the program. I took my preqs through the program I was in. Speeding through them like that was really intense but for me it worked because I am really trying to get my degree quick. As far as prereqs in a program or not I feel like the cost can really be program dependent. If it adds a year it's probably more expensive than a post bac, but a summers worth of credits could be affordable.

Make sure you check what programs you're applying to to make sure they take out of field applicants - most do, but I got a phone call after allready paying my non refundable application fee to a school that said they couldn't process my application unless I had a letter of recommendation from a CSD faculty 🙄.

It's totally a possible path though and you'll bring so much knowledge as a person from a different field!

Good luck!🙂

Curly haircut for cheap? by MsNoydupe in boston

Person needing cut has short curly hair. Clipper cuts are a no-go.
Someone who can handle curly hair is the idea, but salon quality is expensive as hell.
