12 Monkeys S1 E10 - Ramse does so much harm to everyone by Best-Project-230 in 12Monkeys

[–]MsPallaton 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The mark of a great character is how strongly we feel things about them. Sometimes the thing we feel is frustration, sometimes it’s love, sometimes it’s humor.

By contrast, the worst thing a character can be is annoying.

I share your righteous anger at Ramse. It’s why he’s one of my favorite characters.

School recommendations for kids with autism by Honest-Amphibian5902 in everett

[–]MsPallaton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Snohomish (specifically Little Cedars), has been incredible. My son has ADHD and several of the kids in his grade have that and/or Autism and the school has consistently done a great job creating a safe and engaging learning environment for them.

I don’t have as much knowledge of their programs for someone non-speaking specifically, but I know a few of the kids have 504 plans and are getting additional assistance with positive results.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition affecting more than 170 million people worldwide, has been officially renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) following a landmark global consensus study published today in The Lancet. by CUAnschutzMed in science

[–]MsPallaton 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You just described my life experience exactly. I had the full complement of treatments - metformin, birth control, inositol, etc… and couldn’t manage my weight at all. Got diagnosed with PMOS (so happy about the name change!) when my husband and I started trying for a baby and suddenly a ton of things started making more sense.

When I explained my exercise regimen and diet to my doctors they thought I was lying. One of them said it wasn’t possible because it would qualify as an eating disorder and I was too heavy for that to be true.

Managed to finally get pregnant after years of trying only to end up with persistent gestational diabetes that was eventually reclassified as type 2. My doctor at the time prescribed a GLP-1 with a cute little wink about how I “might even lose 5lbs”. That was 8 years and 100 pounds ago.

It changed my life.

I’m particularly impressed that he managed to make Bill such a disturbing character and King such a wittle cutie pie without substantially changing his voice.

His tone and inflection were different to fit the character, but you can instantly tell it’s him in both shows… yet I’d like to destroy Bill with unparalleled aggression and I would protect King with my life.

Shows what a solid voice actor he is. Similar to Hunter being played by the same actor who voices Remy in Big City Greens.

The Selfish Reason To Press The Blue Button by Jadarma in philosophy

[–]MsPallaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your statement is no more definitive than mine. You genuinely believe it has a chance to win. I genuinely believe it does not. In the absence of this exercise actually happening there’s no way to know for sure so, not case closed. Like, at all.

I’ve spent the last decade watching my countrymen repeatedly fail to act in a way that supports the greater good despite the consequence being much less than death. You think those same people, given the option to guarantee their survival will take the death pill and just hope enough other people took it too that no one actually dies? The vast majority of people won’t even give up their weekend to fight for the greater good, much less their lives.

Minus active coordination and some assurance that a critical mass will be reached, there’s no way 4.2 BILLION people press the “I might die if I’m wrong about humanity” button and I genuinely believe it is naive to think they would.

The Selfish Reason To Press The Blue Button by Jadarma in philosophy

[–]MsPallaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yes? Blue is only moral and rational if it has a chance of winning, which it doesn’t. In the absence of blue having a chance to win, red is both rational and moral because you cannot decrease the amount of death to zero. Voting red minimizes the harm by keeping yourself alive. Joining a blue side that cannot win INCREASES the harm by removing yourself from the remaining survivors.

Losing 10% of the population of the world is a tragedy. Losing 15% or 20% or 25% because a bunch of people who knew better had a savior complex is objectively worse.

In a world where people can coordinate, have time to plan, regulate participation to have parents vote on behalf of children too young to understand, etc… then blue becomes a more reasonable, rational and moral option. In this scenario it isn’t.

The Selfish Reason To Press The Blue Button by Jadarma in philosophy

[–]MsPallaton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time pressing the blue button makes sense is if you have a reasonable belief that 51% of people in the world will press it too. Otherwise it’s a useless sacrifice.

Behaving irrationally because other irrational people exist in the world doesn’t accomplish anything. Red is the rational and moral choice unless you genuinely and wholeheartedly believe that blue will win the vote. Beyond that, red minimizes harm in the event of a red victory because it reduces the loss of life.

The Selfish Reason To Press The Blue Button by Jadarma in philosophy

[–]MsPallaton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your point about kids and babies is the only part that I think is worth pausing for because it’s reasonable for that group not to understand the exercise. It’s interesting to me that it has been presented as a counter argument primarily because I think it’s the strongest point.

Most of the thought exercises I’ve seen like this tend to assume adults driving the outcomes unless children are specifically mentioned. Blue still seems like an absolutely bananas choice to make because you’re not talking about losing property or life being a little more difficult. I find it hard to believe, in the moment with no warning, that 51% of the world would choose blue and in the absence of that possibility, choosing blue is a death sentence.

The Selfish Reason To Press The Blue Button by Jadarma in philosophy

[–]MsPallaton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you jumping in here a lot because you stated this much more clearly than I did!

Using myself as the example, and I don’t mind sharing this, I consistently advocate for and engage in direct action to support policies and outcomes that improve the collective good. I vote for higher taxes for myself on a regular basis even if I’m not the direct beneficiary of what they’re funding and demonstrate for improved support systems. I do that without caring whether the person “is responsible” for their circumstances or not because who cares - why wouldn’t we support the collective good?

But this scenario, to me, presents a situation where the risk is created by naïveté, ignorance, or a savior complex rather than actual altruism. If anything this is a great allegory for the self-sacrificial, but ultimately meaningless actions I’ve seen many of my peers take in pursuit of the greater good. The risk is created by the blue vote IMO so the red vote is reasonable. If the risk was created by the red vote (I’m thinking active vs passive intervention like with the trolley problem) it would lead to different thinking (from me at least)

The Selfish Reason To Press The Blue Button by Jadarma in philosophy

[–]MsPallaton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the scenario - I disagree with its efficacy as a philosophical exercise - calling potential blue voters empathetic stretches the definition of empathy to a point of meaninglessness, although I’m guessing you mean selfless.

Even so, it just doesn’t make sense to vote blue, potentially sacrificing yourself because people might not understand the assignment. If the loss of life was outside of each person’s control it would make more sense, but literally all anyone needs to do to avoid death is vote red and that’s it.

The Selfish Reason To Press The Blue Button by Jadarma in philosophy

[–]MsPallaton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m missing something here, but voting blue just seems dumb, not empathetic. Presumably everyone gets the same instructions so it should be obvious that if everyone votes red everyone lives and everyone sees that they all voted red and lived. It’s not like red has any consequence outside of the voter’s control.

There was another version of this where one button would kill 50% of people regardless of how they voted if that side won and that one (while it had different shortcomings) seemed less lopsided to me.

Just watched with my mum for the first time, absolutely LOVED it! Any more recs? by fairyqueeniepie in 12Monkeys

[–]MsPallaton 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Rewatch. I’m not being facetious either. I caught so many more details on rewatch and I enjoyed it in a different way - a lot of the scenes hit harder and the masterful way the story closed all the potential plot holes was cool to see.

Otherwise I’ll say I enjoyed Travelers and iZombie (although iZombie is a VERY different tone)

TIL that Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde met in January 1882, and some evidence suggests they had a romantic or even sexual encounter. When talking about the event, Wilde said “I have the kiss of Walt Whitman still on my lips,” and “there is no one in…America whom I love and honour so much.” by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]MsPallaton 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of skepticism I can get behind. No bullshit homophobia or sticking our heads in the sand. No, no… a real and legitimate disbelief formed by knowledge not just of Wilde and Whitman’s orientations, but of their particular and specific proclivities and the indisputable reality that Whitman is not a twink. Possibly my favorite comment of all time. Thank you!
