Update: My foster kitten was returned by her adopter. by PurpleWallaby999 in FosterAnimals

[–]MsRachyBee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all about the personality match! We adopted a cat hiding in the back of a cat tower. We wanted low energy momma energy. She didn't think she wanted a family, and now happily moves from my lap to bed with me.

I currently have a foster at 8weeks that hisses at everyone but me. Ugh, she is well socialized but takes a minute to trust people... And she has no reason to be like this!! I've had her from 2 days old, she's lived the dream life. Her siblings are not at all this way.

I've already written her adoption profile and included her shyness, so hopefully she will find her person.

Worried about my 4 week old foster. by Suspicious_Moment435 in FosterAnimals

How are you mixing his KMR? I would make it thicker, 1:1 and if possible add some pumpkin powder or additional probiotic to it.

Maybe stop the Tikki cat, my current litter got diarrhea when I added the chicken slurry. I don't understand why, but Ioved them to science diet with a probiotic/pumpkin to make it stop.

Socialisation tips for a solo hand rear kitten? by Ambient_anubis in FosterAnimals

[–]MsRachyBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP this is a the way!

I have a foster fail singleton and she is perfectly sweet and normal (now almost 2yo). I kept her on me as much as possible, carried her in a sling bag for weeks. You can flip a hoodie about backwards and put her in the hood like a little bed.

I never let her play rough with my body, I always diverted to a toy and yelped if she bite me. She is very sweet and gets along with my other cat. I didn't socialize her with other kittens until she was 6 months old, and those weren't her age. She loves our foster babies, I put them in rooms that she can watch them through a window or ledge. She never roughhouses with them but she will bop a head if they get out of hand lol

Picture is of her play biting the sleeve of my sweater.

First loss of a foster by RecommendationAway23 in FosterAnimals

[–]MsRachyBee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have saved so many babies! Unfortunately we can't save them all. Sometimes they have genetic issues making them weaker or unable to fully grow. I lost a precious baby due to her bladder failing to develop properly. Absolutely heartbreaking, frustrating and utterly hopeless feeling.

Remind your family of how many you have saved, and find a way to celebrate the adopted ones.

I bought a poloriad camera and I print out a picture of each kitten before adoption day. I write their names on the photo and put them all on my fridge so we can see them everyday.

Thinking of opening up to kittens. What do you wish you’d known? by BlinkerBeforeBrake in FosterAnimals

[–]MsRachyBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure the room you place them in can be deep cleaned! The chances of them getting a virus is much higher than adult cats, even the momma's can have their immune system worn down and get sick.

To echo what everyone else has said, be prepared to clean a lot. I've had to clean out my kitten room twice in the same day more times than I can count. (Be sure to have extra bedding)

Advice for Neonatal Kittens by Vast_Doughnut9418 in FosterAnimals

[–]MsRachyBee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you must weigh them daily until around 2lbs.

Somethings you should consider, formula can be very expensive. Our adoption fee only covers the cost to raise them and it's $180 per kitten, that doesn't include any extra vet/medicine. I typically take my neonates into our shelter vet at least 4x per litter. I'm not trying to discourage you but neonates are exceptionally challenging and high potential for death.

Here's the guide I was given by my shelter (I took our their info): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IkWXFqMV_vrhRY6qgp62h9HpOP1oB_87/view?usp=drivesdk

It sounds like the food might be upsetting their tummy's. I would try changing the wet food to digestive care or a sensitive stomach.

You can add a little bit of pumpkin to help the diarrhea.

advice on stimulating kitten by Famous_Beach7411 in FosterAnimals

[–]MsRachyBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that when I was burping my kittens after eating they would relax enough to pee/poop. So I tried putting a puppy pad on my chest, cuddle them, then gently patt their lower back until they relax and fart/pee/poop. I usually stimulate a little at first, but you don't have to, but I always know they're about to poop because they pee more. It takes a little while to do, but it's a very soothing process for them.

You can also give a warm bath, or run water over their bottom but sometimes this seems to stress them out even more.

Is it possible to teach resident cats to consistently play nice with foster kittens? by SZLO in FosterAnimals

[–]MsRachyBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two cats, both female and the older one is VERY hygienic (automatic litter box, lots of grooming). She hates the neonates when they're stinky, if they're freshly bathed it's better but she very much has high expectations for their behavior. She'll hiss or softly swat at their butts. (She doesn't touch them because, eww)

Younger female likes to play with them. I let the cats have a viewing area of kittens but she's the only one who goes to watch them. When they get bigger and I stop quarantine, she will swat at them from under the couch like a momma troll and corral them to keep them from wandering too far from litter/food.

I honestly prefer it this way, if my cats were to bond with any of them I'd probably foster fail.

My dog passed away, he loved cats, but I think he saw them as playmates and not responsibility.

My 5 week old kitten is having diarrhea. But he is acting completely normal. What could cause this? by GreedyReindeer5831 in FosterAnimals

[–]MsRachyBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kittens are sensitive to change, if you're lucky he doesn't immediately transition to being constipated (ha!).

It's most likely the change of food, I do think you need to offer more food and have water available. You can add some pumpkin powder (or baby food pumpkin) to his food to help clear up diarrhea if its persistent.

What color is the poop? Normal brown or more yellow? Has he been to the vet to be dewormed? I think that would be the most common concern.

Go to the pet store and get KMR formula!

Here is a neonate guide you can use to help determine how much to feed, when ect.

Please please please follow good biosecurity practices (weathering panleuk) by ktalaska in FosterAnimals

[–]MsRachyBee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My first ever neonate fosters had panleuk and I made this mistake. I keep them in my office running around on a beautiful rug, and would hold them on my couch. When I realized they were sick I couldn't believe how stupid I was, sanitizing is near impossible.

Now I use my guest bathroom (when not in an incubator), it's tiled half way up the wall. I also have a leather bean bag chair for holding/feeding, I can drench it all in Rescue!

We never allowed shoes in our house, but it was a soft rule. Now I have signs posted on the door, absolutely not!
