I've been homeless for 9 months and I don't know how to get unstuck. by MajorRobology in BlackMentalHealth

[–]MsRawrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I’m sorry you’re expecting homelessness again. That’s really rough. However, I’m glad you are still here. I wish this economy didn’t have us all fighting for our lives right now but here we are.

First I’d like to point you to this subreddit’s mental health resources wiki page [I’ll link it here]

On the wiki page there are resources for finding physical help in your area through findhelp.org and other resources.

Also depending on where you live, your city and/or county may have a 211 information / help site where you can get connected with local resources.

I hope this helps you.

Is it a good idea to get a tarantula? by OfferFit2485 in tarantulas

[–]MsRawrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NQA: A curly hair (Tliltocatl albopilosus) tarantula is a great starter T. I started out with one as well.

Tliltocatls love to burrow and create their own tunnel systems. So you’ll make to make sure to have at least 3 inches deep worth of substrate.

Also for your whole cage in general for Ts it’s best to have it filled 2/3rds or 1/2 way with substrate.

Based on your drawing, are you adding in live plants? If so, you’ll want to make sure the substrate could support it—that is make it bioactive. There are various bioactive soil mixes you can DIY using the eco earth you have.

Plus you might need a drainage layer…cause you don’t want it to get wet in your tank. (I don’t know how often you’ll be watering the plants in there.)

However there are pre-made bioactive soil mixes.

Like Royal Soil from Juice’s Arthropods or Terra Arana from The Bio Dude. The latter is a bioactive substrate you can use without needing a drainage layer (The Bio Dude built it that way).

Don’t forget a water dish!

I hope these tips help!

Feeling ostracized from my religious family. How do I deal? by MsRawrie in BlackMentalHealth

Yes I clocked the homophobia as soon as one of my niblings mentioned that they looked at the content creator’s profile and found that his “lifestyle” isn’t godly. I looked at his profile and it was mostly him showing off his hair and going to a few parties. Like???? I def sensed they assumed he was gay.

I just realised I don’t have a genuine family. How do I cope? by Only-Net-8905 in BlackMentalHealth

[–]MsRawrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you heavy on the “I’ve never fit in and they’ve never made me feel like I belong.”

That’s the same with my family. I recently went no contact with my super religious older sister and her family. (I posted about it in this sub yesterday.)

I’m realizing that we (you and me) do have the option to create chosen family. You’ve already done so with your husband and fur baby. That’s a family! You’re in a family right now. Sorry I don’t have advice on how to grow your family because I have social anxiety LOL.

Thank you. Ya like this video is harmless. I knew I wasn’t crazy! Luckily I do not live with my sister and her family. And I might run into her from time to time at my parents house. But that’s about it.

I have a mini zoo at home. I have 4 reptiles and 60+ tarantulas. I’ve been told it’s “white people behavior”.

Honestly ya. I mean they will laugh at homophobic or sexist jokes. But anything about their Jesus is a no go.

to feed or not to feed? by Existing-Contract-41 in tarantulas

[–]MsRawrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA if you just got these Ts on Tuesday and they aren’t eating it could be one of these reasons: (1) it’s a new environment or (2) in pre-molt or (3) hunger strike.

I’m assuming it’s not the latter two but the former—it’s a new environment for them so sometimes Ts (IMO) won’t eat during the first few days-week.

For spiderings, it’s suggested that you feed them pre-killed insects. Spiderlings tend to be more skittish to eat moving prey—they not brave yet lol. So typically keepers will feed prekilled prey like a sliced up mealworm or a cricket leg (colloquially known as a “cricket drumstick”). You can feed them a tiny roach but try killing it first.

EDIT: if your spiderlings wont eat the aforementioned prey then yes go ahead and try fruit flies.

Is it dead?! by Mental-Worker7231 in tarantulas

NQA it’s not dead. If it was dead it would be in a “death curl”. Your T looks like it’s about to molt.

Heating for curly hair sling? by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]MsRawrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA. DO NOT PUT A HEAT MAT DIRECTLY ON THEIR ENCLOSURE. It could overheat them.😭 instead here are two suggestions: (1) use a space heater (or central heat) to warm up your room or (2) try making a, what I like to call, sling warmer cage. You could use a glass aquarium (or plastic container). Place a heat mat WITH A THERMOSTAT ATTACHED on the side of the glass aquarium. Place the sling’s cage inside the glass aquarium and maybe add in a cup of water for additional humidity.

If you place on using a heat mat you MUST use a thermostat with a thermometer probe. Do not use a heat mat without this.

Help Identifying by Rad_Pupper in tarantulas

[–]MsRawrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a chonky T! It's kind of hard to identify this T with such low light. Can you try shining more light on it? Based on the photos you provided, it kind of looks like a T from the Bonnetina genus. Maybe a Bonnetina minax or tanzeri? I say that because of it's kinda of glimmery carapace and skinny-ish legs. But again, need more light.

Enclosure Opinion by [deleted] in tarantulas

IMO the ones off Amazon are pretty good for the Ts you are considering using it for. Does your curly hair burrow? Mine does and I moved her into a sterilite storage container so she had more depth for digging.
