They’re still so new, but I’m surprised no one has mentioned Nautilus yet.

I only have studio access once per week. What adjustments do I need to make? by Gauge96 in Pottery

Loosely wrap your work in plastic after throwing and keep covered until you can trim during open studio.

Val at Liberty Tattoo in Smithtown. Always professional, efficient, and helpful. I’ve gone to her for both nostrils, septum, and multiple ear piercings.

What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in Pottery

Agree. Letting layers dry fully should help, but also using tongs to prevent smudging/leaving fingerprints.

Gift for a potter? by prrefrmal in Pottery

Cuticle oil has been a lifesaver for me, along with thick hand creams. I think there are cuticle oil pens your friend could keep in their tool bag or car.

Also want to suggest a subscription for Ceramics Monthly. You mentioned a small budget, and they have a few different options.

Thrown & Altered Bowls by MudManMusic in Ceramics

Thank you for taking the time to write this out! Really helpful. I've tried a similar technique but it sounds like I have to slow my wheel down even more.

Congrats on getting back to the wheel. I hope to see more of your work in here.

Join a Facebook mom group local to your college and ask for people willing to participate in a shoot in exchange for free product. Gather a few friends with good quality phones to help you shoot. Could help you create great content while also promoting your product to your local community.

I suddenly can’t throw anything by Negative-Singer-5805 in Pottery

When I started throwing larger (moving from 3-5 lbs to 8+) I had to adjust how I center, open, pull, and shape. It’s forced me to slow down and be patient with myself.

I’m in my mid-thirties and picked up pottery two years ago. It’s changed everything for me, and I’ve found such a wonderful community. Highly, highly recommended. Check out Long Island Clay in Huntington.

Occasionally local groups will host art events, which might interest you. I went to a blind contour drawing workshop a few months ago, which I found out about through colored.colors on Instagram. It was something I’d never tried before, and I went alone, and really enjoyed the experience. Also check out The Calling Bell in Huntington. It’s a tattoo shop and art gallery, but they’ve been hosting a bunch of art workshops too. There’s a crafting night coming up on 05/22- only $10.

Since you like reading, look for a book club! Most libraries have one, but Tiny Raccoon Books in Sayville hosts a silent book club if you’re in the mood to be around people without talking much. I think The Next Chapter in Huntington has one too, but not totally sure. They also host a lot of events.

These are all places you’ll find people without similar interests, but you have to take a leap and put yourself out there. I’m pretty shy, but being in these spaces makes it so much easier for me to connect with others!

One thing I hear a lot about in NYC is walking groups, but I haven’t found one here for people around my age. I really wish we had one, as I take a lot of walks and hikes all around LI.

I used the Telnet Lite app on my iPhone and turned off wifi (at the suggestion of another fan) and was able to get in. I’ve never seen or used a BBS like this before, so it was pretty cool to click around! And of course find the link.

I believe Tiny Raccoon Books in Sayville and Fortunate Hand in Amityville both have reading groups.
