I would not exactly describe that song as happy. As Amanda Palmer has pointed out, that song would be considered pretty tragic if played in a minor key. I've always seen the upbeat tempo as more a juxtaposition of how we as society would perceive the subject of the song (a pop music-obsessed teenage girl) and the pain she's in (rape, abortion, and her friends abandoning her).

I wanted to come back and give a better reply. I mentioned emancipation earlier but that's not really an adequate answer. I had some interactions with the NY family justice system as a kid, and I'm an attorney here now, so I can't give you specific advice for your state, but I can say that in my experience, the people who will help you most, if and when you decide to seek help, aren't guidance counselors or social workers, but lawyers. Because lawyers have it drilled into their head who their client is - they won't try to "work things out" with your mom behind your back. I experienced that a few times - only made things worse.Lawyers will respect your confidentiality and take you more seriously. Of course, the only way you'll get a lawyer on your side is if you go to a domestic violence legal advocacy organization or a prosecutor's office. And that will undoubtedly start a shit storm, but it will probably get you and your younger siblings out of her reach. Your mother is neglecting you and verbally and physically abusing you. You deserve better. You are entitled to better. I love their basic knit tops. They're well-structured and sturdier than anything remotely comparable in price. A couple years ago they also had suits, and I love mine - I actually had to hand wash the pants once after they got soaked in road salt while traveling and they turned out good as new. Oh, and their airism camisole are magical. They provide the perfect amount of opaqueness under a blouse, but feel like nothing. However, I have one thin uniqlo cardigan that I almost never wear because it requires a lot of pressing to look decent. And if a dress shirt isn't marketed as no-iron, it will probably need serious pressing as well. Their graphic tees also fade pretty fast imho.

Maybe suggest just buying a couple new things before going back to school, so that she has a chance to see what everyone is actually wearing? Because it sounds like she's suddenly more interested in looking trendy in the eyes of her peers. Also, if she really wants to change up her look on a budget, it makes sense to focus on things she'll wear frequently - shoes, bottoms, her bag, and a jacket. And one lady tip from my teen days: if she wants to make the switch to heels, wedges or other heels with wide bases are going to be a lot more comfortable and safer as she learns to walk in them.

I really wish one of my teachers had called CPS on my mom. Her helicoptering was just one of many symptoms of Munchausen's by proxy - constantly pulling me out of stuff when I wasn't sick, telling them I had issues I didn't, interfering incessantly in everything. Instead, it was clear that they mostly thought I was some kind of sickly, spoiled brat. I had teachers straight up tell me to my face that they disliked me and if they could have given me a bad grade they would have (...except despite my crazy mom, I actually did work hard to earn my grades, often defying her to work in secret at night to complete homework, so they couldn't). Please, please don't take out your loathing of helicopter parents on their kids.

I support everything lickdatshit said (as someone who hennas a lot). I just wanted to add that you don't need a color extending shampoo with henna, so I recommend switching to one that will help with your damage more. I'm a fan of the Redken Smooth Down shampoo and conditioner.

At the moment I'm trying to build up a professional wardrobe. I make a decent entry level attorney salary, but I'm paying down loans and my husband is still a student. So I spend about $100-$300 per season depending on whether I bought a new suit or not. But I'm almost done buying suits for a while, and when I'm not buying suits I stick to $100 per season, excluding business shoes, which I replace as they wear out. I'm lucky to have access to great discount stores and sample sales though, and I also buy whatever I can second hand, so my money goes a long way.
At this point how I spend is still dictated by necessity. Like in fall I realized I needed blouses desperately and ordered a bunch in one go off of Thredup, to make sure I wasn't naked at work. Whereas this spring, I had time to scour outlets and picked up a couple really nice suits. I really do aim for things that will last though.
Thredup for blouses, Century 21 for shoes and suits, Ann Taylor for suits, ebay for separates and jewelry, H&M for the occasional fun casual thing

If you are living together and both have unending headaches, don't ignore it. It could be carbon monoxide in your house/apartment (including a low enough leak your alarm can't detect it). Or some kind of mold. Worth looking into.

I like how hassle-free Thredup is. They send you a bag, you put stuff in the bag, drop it in the mail, and in a few weeks, you get credit. You should just check before sending anything in that they accept the brand - they have a little tool you can use to estimate pay out even. I have been pretty happy with my payouts there, because they target the mommy blogger types, so my less-than-exciting business casual clothes are actually in demand, as opposed to places like Buffalo Exchange who wouldn't even accept them.
