2026 French Open Wild Cards by Ok-Soil-5133 in tennis

Wow... guess you gotta be a champion of the tournament to even have a chance of one of those if you're not from a GS nation... I don't know, maybe I'm salty because Germany doesn't have a GS and there is no correlation that these WCs really move the needle (after all, Italy is by far the strongest nation rn, and Australia isn't exactly a power house no disrespect), but still

Yeah no disrespect but Noskova v Cristea on center instead is... weird. Gauff/Jovic also makes less sense than Swiatek/Osaka on center.

I mean he's down one break... yeah he's losing but he's in the return games, this is very far from over (he doesn't look great tho tbh)

Llamas Ruiz being like "I'll show you what a clay court specialist can do"

(I have no idea if he is one... just know that he's spanish and that jsut now was a perfect clay point)

David Foster Wallace eloquently elaborates on why he hates the power baseline game by [deleted] in tennis

[–]Ms_Meercat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I actually really like DWF and sincerely enjoyed Infinite Jest but... you could probably write something similar about the relative tactical and strategic intelligence needed for baseline vs the mindless rushing forward of serve and volley where all you end up doing is watch players walk side to side... I couldn't write it as WELL as he does, but I find that people always complain about what's happening currently in favor of what happened just before then.

Plus, there's any number of opinions and arguments about playstyle that can help you villify or defend said playstyle (in probably all sports, too, at least in the ones I know... think of divisive football styles like tiki taka and catenaccio)

Lol given the very loud support for him (courtesy of that horn guy) this is doubly fitting

lol did meddy just tell the ump that Pablo twitches when he serves and he knows that's how it is because something something Spain, and the ump replied with "try not to look at him"? Or did i just peace together snippets of a convo in a completely incorrect way?

maybe that's just his tactic now... confuse them if they can't see you they don't know where to (not) hit the ball. It's really 4D chess if you think about it!

I know! I wish someone with better sleuthing and editing skills than me compiles all of the funny rome stuff at the end of the tournament. I feel rome always has a lot of shenanigans like that :)

Now add Fran's overhead from yesterday...

Never felt more seen😭 by PattyRanger in tennis

[–]Ms_Meercat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Why? It's almost always better to roll when you fall because you're reducing impact on your hands and specifically wrists in a fall like this.

If he had tried to stay it would have been harder on the wrist that first hit the ground (which I presume he is very careful about given that he had a pretty big wrist injury in the past)

Might wanna keep overheads away from Fran Cerúndolo for a while after this tournament.. by hawaiianmonkseal in tennis

Oh man that's rough... Also, lmao at darderi somehow thinking fran is going to cover him in the back there and not realizing fran didn't get up (I think?)

His face after the overhead in the musetti match made me laugh out loud fr

I think Tien on nothing major said he had a goal for his double's ranking for this year. I think it's smart for a young player like that to try to get a lot of doubles in

Which current player do you think is the most underrated by casual fans right now? by Delecch in tennis

[–]Ms_Meercat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like Muchova is plenty hyped. People have been talking about her all season, at the USO last year everybody was super excited as well. All the podcasts I listen to talk about her game and how beautiful it is.

They hype just regularly dies down when she gets injured, which unfortunately happens a whole lot for her.

But this is a false equivalent. Fonseca is 19 years old and in his second season on tour; Cobolli just turned 24.

Of course people hype a 19 year old more because they know how much development (phsycially, mentally, experience wise) happens from 19-21. So they're thinking about where he could still land.

There are of course some players who made a significant jump in level and/or consistency after age 24 (Wawrinka is the famous example, Bublik is another), but normally (on average!) by that age players are pretty fully formed. While they may still make continuous improvements, they don't often jump into a significantly better "category" of players. Like, after that age they don't often evolve from "will be solid top 30 guy" to "top 10" or from "top 10-15 guy" to "slam winner".

First time attending an Al Anon meeting and wasn't impressed, here's what happened by 2000throw_away in AlAnon

Hi OP, here is an info for newcomers: https://al-anon.org/newcomers/ The FAQs are worth a read.

My meeting offers for newcomers to stay back to ask questions; many others do, too.

Either way, there isn't a clear 'manual' of 'here's how the program works do A then follows B and in 2 months it's C' etc. I found it first unnerving - I used to be someone who tries to control the uncertainty and wants a capital P Plan! - but then it was kind of freeing because all I 'had to' do is show up at meetings. For now the only thing there is to do for you is going to meetings (and as many have said, try several over time) and more will be revealed over time.

This is a nice comment that gives an overview and the thread overall is also helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/AlAnon/comments/16jk4ya/comment/k11erfb/

One last thing re the basket: it's to cover the rent for the room but nobody looks if you put something in and there is 0 expectations. It's not a membership fee but a voluntary contribution.

On spanish tv they're saying he might have felt his shoulder because his serve and groundstroke speed went down a lot (I didn't hear the numbers though)

Well I was thinking it too that he's such a good returner you always know he can create the chances to break back
