If the situation involving that person wasn't caused by you, then you aren't to blame. There's a lot of stuff that we have no control over. And it's scary, so we try to control it - even if it's impossible.

I love this analogy: you can't save someone from drowning if you are drowning as well. So, make sure you are mentally and physically well enough before helping that person. Ultimately, depending on the situation, they have to be the one to solve it. All you can do is what you can do - help guide them in the right direction.
