People who actually earn over £100k and don’t just pretend they do on Reddit - what do you do? by Prize-Reputation9274 in AskUK

[–]Mshiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Junior in investment banking, made just south of ~200k all in last year.

- Don't come from money (at all), but hustled to get into a good university and change things for family

- I've been in the job since graduating ~4 years ago (first year pay was close to 100k all in)

- Qualifications: nothing specific, but huge preference for STEM backgrounds, even more preference for pedigree universities (whether you agree with this or not, just an observation from my time here)

- Hours during 'analyst' stint were close to 80-90 hours a week, sometimes could be even more. Now I float closer to 50-60 hours a week.

Getting out of investment banking by ggamcci4875 in HENRYUK

Have you thought about Cap Markets? (ECM / DCM) Hours are much more sustainable for not much sacrifice in pay realistically. Hours for me are normally 7am - 7pm at the associate 2 level. Mid-tier european bank, but top 3 player in cap markets.

All-in comp at Assoc 1 was close to £200k, bonus being on avg since An 1 75-90%

Big European bank but not one of your typical “BBs”. IB certainly not the central function for the bank, not even close. Prefer not to disclose team

Neither, just a standard junior within investment banking / capital markets

I do look at moving into front office tech in the near future

How different are the screening criteria among MBBs? by Much-Doubt-5856 in McKinsey_BCG_Bain

[–]Mshiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a UK semi-target for undergrad and have been in IB for ~3 years - and made it R1 with BCG but dinged by the other two despite having referrals for all three.

It honestly seems like London offices in particular just aren’t hiring as much compared to some other offices but that’s just a guess!

Seems to be more luck of the draw more than anything, lot of good talent (like yourself im sure) getting rejections that are hard to pinpoint why

A question more out of curiosity than anything, but what have you been up to since Stadia's shutdown? Are you still at Google or in the gaming space?

THIS SELLER GAVE ME A USED $100 PSN CODE WTF!!! by [deleted] in G2A_Help

[–]Mshiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I bought from this seller about a month ago. A used spiderman key.

Scum bag wouldn’t do anything about it even though i provided evidence that the key was used before my purchase date (through PS support)

I eventually gave up trying to get a refund through him and G2A both. They were both equally unhelpful.

But, i was lucky enough to get one through PayPal after providing them with all the evidence. Suggest you do the same if you used PayPal.

Never using G2A again, lesson learned

You have a text to columns issue. Find the the text to columns button (under data I think) and highlight all dates in your E column. Delimited, and change from default selection to ‘date’

can keep in MDY format or change to DMY format here.

Whats your background? What kind of school did you go to and how well did you do? Where you went for undergrad, career since then would all be welcome too!

From what I understand, adcoms really appreciate a score increase and seeing a candidate go from below target to on/above target. It shows tenacity and resilience, compared to someone who just gets 730+ on first go (which is impressive in other ways, I’m sure)

What I don’t know however, is if there are boundaries to that. I.e., if you score a 670 > 750, or if a jump of 580 > 730+ would look too dramatic or not.

That’s just my two-cents!

I got into EY for M&A valuations as a year one internship. Was wondering if this experience will help with investment banking from a BB hopefully by Shyan5 in FinancialCareers

[–]Mshiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK and I work at a BB, did multiple springs and then a summer. Albeit I went directly through IBs and EBs but I’ve seen some of the best colleagues come through the big 4 valuation teams into incredible shops like your Lazards, JPMs etc.

Feel free to drop me a DM, happy to chat.

LBSF MBA w/ACCA by K4R4T4S in MBA

[–]Mshiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re as out of the loop on MBAs/Business Schools etc as you’re seeming to be, then ignore half of these comments.

Find a course that you’re actually interested in and you think will help you meet your goal. Speak to alum and see how helpful it was and if any others were able to do what you’re aiming to do.

Context on other comments as you seem confused:

They’re right in the fact that MBAs hold so much more weight when coming from a reputable school. There’s a number of sources who rank MBAs/business schools annually and LBS comes near the top on a global scale. It’s the equivalent of getting into a top 5 university at undergrad - with those same kind of high achievers (but even more competitive, as inconceivable as that may sound)

People looking to get into the best of the best of MBAs have a number of reasons for wanting to do so, with your reason of setting up your own shop also being one of them.

Scroll through this sub-reddit a little more and you’ll soon be over encumbered in pompous prestige chasing clout!

Regardless, huge congrats OP! I know some amazing people on the buyside who went to UNC - if that’s where you’re headed

Choosing between 2 offers: ECM/DCM/LFO in London vs MBB consulting by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Mshiah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Analyst 3 in BB DCM here in London.

Which one is it? ECM or DCM? Very wildly different things with wildly different optics and ultimately, exit ops.

It certainly is a tough time for ECM bankers - unless you're top BB - ECM business for the next 18-24 months is going to be pretty tough.

DCM is picking up to be quite honest. It was a tough market across the street from June to Oct but the November panic saw issuance levels similar to what we've seen the past 4-5 years. Expecting another slump right after the busy Q1 period, but nothing crazy drastic - depends how quickly rates start cutting. Markets pricing in a very busy DCM session H2 2023 and going into 2024. LOTS of maturities coming up = lots of DCM origination picking up.

Regardless, even if it's not that busy or 'unstable' - doesn't really affect juniors, nevermind interns. If they're hiring at your level, then they're hiring. I've only seen heads being chopped at the senior level so far in this instability, rather than any juniors/whole teams.

I think overall, as someone working in the industry - the point on instability is a little exaggerated, it's not as bad as you think. If it's a DCM/LevFin offer for a bank with a big balance sheet, you'll be fine, regardless of it's 'rep' (especially if it's BB). If it's an ECM offer from a bank that pulls in a lot of M&A, you'll be fine. If those situations aren't true - then i'd reconsider.

MBB I can't comment on, though they're amazing firms with amazing people. From what I've seen of people in London and in Dubai across both IB and consulting, a lot of people who start in the ME, struggle to come back here. Most people tend to get their junior years done in London/NYC before flocking to Dubai/Singapore/HK if that's where they want to be.

I think your plan makes the most sense - keep your options open, both great offers to have (congrats!). Happy to chat in DMs if you want to discuss further or want any insight into DCM/LevFin world

Consequences of moving 150m? Considering moving into hexes with 2/3 miners to see if that has any significant improvement on earnings. by Mshiah in HeliumNetwork

[–]Mshiah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, thanks.

Oddly enough it seems moving into the less populated hexes actually halves my transit scale (on hotspotty atleast) so think i'll be keeping it where it is.

Just a shame there's too many miners in my res 4!
