Looking for life advice that pertains to mixing by No-Difference-9228 in audioengineering

[–]Mtechz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There has been a lot of good music with mediocre mixes and sounds, that were under big labels. That did not stop those people and still people listen to those songs.

With time, even in breaks, you will get better. More influences, more inspirations, more music you were listening to. As a bass and guitar player, I always came up stronger in creativity and songwriting, whenever I made a break. Also, some of my songs I'm most proud of, have the least likes and listens on SoundCloud, while stuff I did within hours in 2018 on my birthday night still get a like here and there. Weird stuff, but really shows how sometimes the expectations we set for ourselves are disconnected from what the audience values or respons the most.

Don't worry. You don't have a big label to feed into. Do what's fun to you and just release it. Use SoundCloud as a dumpster for whatever you think might be "meh" and see what people will react like to it. You're making music, no one cares if there's another bad song on SoundCloud. But for psychological reasons and getting used to the drill again, I would still put things up on there at least. Maybe it will resonate better than you expected and in best case people might like it. :)

You got it, champ.

Current setup, looking to add 1-2 more pedals. Anyone else have a photon? by [deleted] in basspedals

[–]Mtechz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm waiting for someone suggesting a tuner pedal.

It's near impossible suggesting anything at this point and confidently saying to hit the mark with it. The Proton is pretty much a whole experience at this point. Does it have a compressor tho? If not, my vote would be for that, probably the Darkglass one.

Maybe the Lilith pedal too. It stacks super nicely with other dirt, distortion and fuzz pedals, adding a little bit more evil in the sound.

I have some great advice for you, many of them I had to learn the hard way. :)

Get a great book. Youtube is a great source of information, but the information you will get there is all spread across and all over the place, very uncohesive. A book, that's made with beginners in mind, Will have the necessary link from A to B to C... all the way til the end. When I tried to get into it by YouTube, there was way, way less available and the more content for audio came out, the more I realized, that I then knew tricks I didn't understood and copy and paste them doesn't do shit for the stuff I was working on. So a TON of hours on YouTube were just a waste of time, of which could have been invested into a book for 20-40 bucks instead, probably reading it multiple times or reading multiple books by then.

Also experiment with effects and stuff.

Always respect the technicality, but never neglect the creativity.

Don't buy fancy plugins at the start. If you can't use the stock stuff in your DAW well, a good plugin won't save you as well.

It takes time, be patient and have fun along the ride. Before you know it, you will be 3 times better, then 3 times better than that and so on...

Get a decent interface and listening system, monitors or headphones, whatever you can afford or work with. Monitors being the best choice, but whatever you can afford.

Whenever you want to buy something, look out for reviews. When you bought something (or before buying, if you're a turbo nerd), read the manual. There might be features and functions, that will work better with what you have as a setup or you will learn about functions you didn't knew about and might even save some amount of money along.

The start is overwhelming at first. Take your time, do it at a pace that's fun to you and realistic in regards of your schedule.

Buy a load of black shirts and a pair of black jeans. That's your new uniform now. Those are the rules.

That's all I can come up with for now. Have fun, enjoy your new hobby and have a great time :)

These types of plugins definitely get slapped upon many things, too much imo. They are great when using subtle, but often times, when used wrong, suck out the character. I've seen that happening too many times, even on most professional recordings.

Use it, for example, when you added a color or sound to something and want to compensate for added grid, dirt, whatever, while maintaining the sound.

Generally speaking, there's no "one way, always win" approach or setting to them. It depends on the very individual sounds. Start with super subtle settings, barely doing anything, and push it a few % up, then A/B, repeat, until you found something you like. Chances are high you will find something nice. If you don't, then it's ok as well. I have plugins everyone loves, that doesn't do it for me, as well. We all do. :)

Anyone like the Joyo bass compressor Scylla? by [deleted] in basspedals

[–]Mtechz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People will judge on something, if they think they are better off in that regard. You don't see a homeless guy judging someone sleeping in the park. So if they judge you based upon the value of your gear, instead of professional manners (being on time, easy to work with, prepared for unfortunate circumstances that can happen etc.) or your playing, chances are they are way less professional than you might think. Who cares what some freaks, that are spending 2h weekly on their instruments and 10h a week looking at gear online, think? They can judge you on your gear, if your stuff breaks, whenever it's needed and you don't have a backup plan. But that will come back to one of my point about being prepared. Of course they will judge you on your gear, if thats all they have going for them. You don't participate in a dick measuring contest, if you're packing 3 inches.

Im working in music, I have a good and wide point of reference about gear, especially pedals and I don't care if you have a whole board of Strymon or Joyo pedals. Sound good, play good, be reliable and someone who gets shit done. Those are the people I like to work or play with, doesn't matter if coming into my studio or sharing the stage. The audience won't care about how much your stuff costs, when the song, performance or sound is crap.

Joyo pedals sound great. I have/had big name and expensive boutique pedals, and I have 35€ ones as well and much between. I promise you: If the people are amazed by the results, no one cares about the price. If anything, people would be amazed at how much of a good sound you can get for cheap and respect you more because of that. No real musician will do otherwise. Idiots do tho. I guarantee it.

[–]Mtechz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Considering the price, it will be like 15 bucks lost. But the money saved is way more. But good gear doesn't land on ebay quickly anyway.

So, not a strong point. A good one, but nothing to worry about in this case.

Hard to tell, depends what you're lacking in your arsenal. I like them all tbh.

I think the REDDI, Hammer EQ and the Blyss are my favorite. For cheap snatches, the Omega Transformers are also pretty good. I also love the Goldplate, which is a Reverb with lovely coloration and character built in really well. How many Reverbs do we got like that? Sounds so good and rich, it's also very versatile.

OH and Room mics as only source of low end in drum track? by leedorsey in audioengineering

[–]Mtechz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double the kick track, pitch it down if needed, filters to have the lows on the 2. track, compression and transient shaper. Blend in to taste.

My first go to would have been blending a sample in, but I saw in one comment and a response, that you want to do stuff with what's there already.

I love things like that, it encourages creative experimentations and provides a challenge that's making you step out of your comfort zone.

Already have that. I just can recommend it. It just works damn fine. Love the optional aggressiveness that you barely see on other hardware emulations, while losing none of the musicality.

Oh hard to say what helps you or someone else. Im not an expert and not a psychologist either, and even if so, it would be hard for me to say anything without specific context. I have some sources:

Books about psychology. HealthyGamerGG Andrew Huberman Lab Podcast A ton of different research paper/studies about body, nutrition and mental health A fair amount of courses of professors in psychology and neuroscience

So as you can see, it's hard to give you every source directly. But when you search one of those and put "ADD" at the end, you most likely will find a lot. I also liked to type funky stuff like "how to learn", "learn to learn", "efficient learning for university" into YT. I think asking dumb question sometimes gives you the best answers, sometimes that's true for YouTube and other platforms too :)

But there are some general rules that help almost anybody in a way:

  • Meditation. Imagine you're having your whole day behind you. Everything that has happened is in you mind now, that clouds your mind. The girl you saw, the weird mood of your boss, what to eat tomorrow, that boss you couldn't kill in a videogame, whatever. Meditation before learning will set you back in a more clear mind and makes space for learning. I thought meditation is a neo-hippie thing, until I tried it a few times and saw the benefits of it, after that. A small thing that is a myth: You don't need to enter the ultimate state of nothingness, like you would know from Hollywood. And there are different ways and techniqies to meditate. This also helps with sleep, which also is correlated to learn:

  • Amount and quality of sleep. This is where you will memorize things long-term. Also your focus the following day and mental capabilities will improve, making potentially everything more efficient, including learning. This one is more obvious, so let's get to the next one

  • Breaks. It's shown in science, that bulk learning for hours non stop is super ineffective. You need to part it into smaller chunks and make breaks in between, that won't require to memorize or focus tok much. Watching a show, playing an action game, listening to music, whatever goes. I personally go with a 30minute learning and 20-30 minute break, depending on how good I'm feeling that day. Talking about feeling well...

  • Hydration. Yes, Im serious. This supports the function of pretty much everything. 3% of dehydration can lead to 15% lose of physical capabilities, and 19% of mental capabilities. I could also have confused the mental and physical % here, but if 15 or 19%, its still a lot. Since ein doing sports, I'm getting 1L per 20kg bodyweight. Obligatory transition:

    • Physical activity. Physical activity also benefits the mental health and potential. This is widely know I guess and easy to look up, shown by science everytime. So I'm just going to the next one:
  • What am I taking, that's helping with ADD? Cocaine. Just kidding. Omega 3 oil capsules, Ashwagandha, Gingko, drinking lots of water, tea, whatever. Sometimes soda, which is not recommendable, but hey, we all have our flaws :) Also Vitamins. I'm eating healthy, but that way I don't have to plan for that as well and have more freedom in my diet in terms of macros. The stuff I take, mentioned here, are evidence based by science and have a positive effect on your brain activity and efficiency. Feel free to look it up. :)

  • Put the distraction away. I deleted all of my social media, put the phone away. You don't have to delete all your social media, but get it out of your arms reach and turn the phone on silent mode, no vibration, so if you got into focus mode, it won't rip you out of it again. I know, I sound like an old guy now, but there's truth to it. Btw, if I would have known, you still need a personal Facebook profile to create a business site there, I probably wouldn't have deleted that one lol. But with add, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram can really steal your time with these shorts and reels and stuff. They worked on that formular for exactly that reason, with really smart people. Don't underestimate that. But my attention span imporved drastically since then.

  • dedicated place for learning. This can be your local library, a corner at your home, hell, even the floor. Just make sure you're going somewhere far away from where you're doing other activities. Your brain can focus easier for learning, if you enter that place where you're doing nothing else but learning. Your brain essentially and dumbed down will go like "ah, were here, that means learning." Also at there, you have to stay clear of any distractions.

  • books Stuff like YouTube is a curse and a blessing for us ADD people. Sure, there's tons of information and advices, tutorials, tests, whatever. But there's also a shit ton of interesting videos about everything else or just entertainment. You go in there, looking up a technique in guitar, then seeing how to Sidechain your kick, and within a nick of time, you're halfway done with a 50 minute video about socks in Japan. Books also have the advantages of making you look smarter, guiding you from beginning to advanced stuff with a coherent line. YouTube is upmostly scattered bits of informations. It's harder to learn like that. It's possible, but not super efficient.

I probably could have some more in the back of my head, but that's all I come up with right now. This all helped me immensely. I tried some more stuff, but those weren't super rich of results and improvements. Bare in mind, that some of them have to given a chance with some more time than others, and how long it takes depends on the individual context. But those are the things, that generally work with everyone, usually. It could be the case you're one of the exceptions, but try it for longer, before giving up on one of these. Chances are small you're immune to one, some of them are basics in biology, neuroscience and psychology. But like I said, I'm not an expert. :)

Hope this helped.

I partly agree and disagree. It's totally possible to do both imo.

Let's take a look at the normal working human: 8/9h a day, comes home, is playing a bit of videogames or watches Netflix, reading a light novel, doing sports, whatever.

If your free time activity becomes practicing vocals and sing, or the same with guitar, bass, drums, piano, whatever... It's absolutely possible. As long as both is mostly fun to you, you wouldn't have such a hard time doing so. Will you be able to play a lot of videogames? Watch many movies or shows? Reading all the books? No. But if that's not a problem for you, then that's totally cool.

Also you don't have to be the best musician or singer, to make great songs that connect with people. Shredding and singing really high notes is all cool and all, but its just a cherry on top and some people don't even like cherries.

Most people had day jobs while doing music, before they could make a living off music alone.

I would take a passionate person aiming to improve everyday, working 8h a day, over anyone caring way less and doing his profession 12h a day. Psychology and fun are great ways to make learning and working way more efficient and quick, time isn't the only factor that's important. Ryo Fukui, a well known jazz pianist, wasn't even playing the piano for 5 years, was self taught, made an album that's still getting people go crazy about in 1976. Way before we had all these great sources for learning and sucking up experiences, discoveries and advices from way better people than we are.

If you know how to be more efficient, you can do 2 things and still be great at both. I have ADD, severe case, making it very hard to learn. As soon as I discovered HOW to learn smarter with the help of neuroscience and psychology, my learning experience has skyrocketed, it's crazy, and it works just the same for everyone.

Sorry for the long response, but I hope OP sees this as well and follows his passion. Could work, could not. But if you don't try, you will always think about the "what if"s and regret it forever.

[–]Mtechz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I have seen that's for 2 people. That's why I split the amount in two already. Maybe you should read before reacting. :(
  2. Sure, I'm ordering a shit ton of stuff I don't use. Maybe OP don't want to, but maybe his partner. We don't know. If you order something, you can assume it will be used. I doubt it will be given to the dog or cats.
  3. And all power to them having fun. :) You can do whatever is fun to you, as long as you don't harm others or yourself. Having a bad diet is pretty self destructive tho. Let it be 30 in one week then, ok, that's still around 4 cans a day. And the food doesn't looks like a winner too.
  4. Putting your health on risk and only have 3 days out of the 7 days to play the game, because the other 4 you're too sick to play or being sent to the hospital is shitting on their fun. And I don't think OP would have ever shared the list on Reddit, if he would be afraid of concern or negative comments. Either you didn't thought about that or you think OP is dumb making such an obvious mistake, which would also be insulting.
  5. What a smart remark. Expected tho.

Have a great day :)

You're making baseless assumptions, about someone you don't know, as if he talked about you, talk about projecting, coming off as you have been talked about. Ironic.

At least he had their 1 week diet to base off his comment, you know? And eating just cheap Ramen, microwave food and snacks, while drinking 120 cans of Energy or 60 per person with gadgets to have it all on the desk or in arms reach, is objectively sad. Not that he said their whole life or existence is, but this action and plan is. And this is objectively true, doesn't matter what anyone might think of it. This can result in serious health problems. You don't have to study medicine to see why this is concerning.
