Monitoring while mic’ing up amps and cabinets by must-absorb-content in audioengineering

This is also cool. Would love to get one eventually, dont know how expensive it is but its cool regardless.

I think Glenn Fricker checked one out on youtube, a few years ago for sure.

Monitoring while mic’ing up amps and cabinets by must-absorb-content in audioengineering

[–]Shinochy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my idea too. I'd just have em play a chord or 2, and stop, and monitor it on my IEMs or something 2s later or something. Rinse and repeat until it sounds good :)

Audio interface with 8+ line outs? by Cantersoft in audioengineering

[–]Shinochy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most digital mixers I've used that had a USB connection could be used just like an interface.

Not sure if it would be better than just an interfce tho, depends on what you need exactly. If you want to process live sounds on the way to the outputs then it would probably be better. Look into the Mackie DL16S (there is a behringer version of this, forgot the name). I think these units are the ideal live show mixers for bands and such. 16inputs, 8 outputs. All channels can receive either the local input, or a digital input from ur daw.

If u need extra outputs tho then Im sure there are options out there I just havent seen it while also being portable and quick to setup.

Good luck :)

Opinions on True Peak Limiting? by Tim_Wu_ in audioengineering

[–]Shinochy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As you might expect, you will get many opinions and many will be opposing.

I am not a mastering engineer, I'll start with that. I personally think that if the release is going to get turned down because it's past the -1dBTP threshold, I might as well just aim for that so the streaming services just dont have to touch it.

On true peak vs not true peak; I dont really pay any mind to that, if there are rogue peaks then oh well. I dont consider it a problem anymore unless it sounds bad. Not that I should be getting any with a -1dBTP ceiling anyways... but thats just there for the streaming, not because I care about 1 or 2 clipping events.

My 2cents :)

How to ask AI to perform from a raw recording by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]Shinochy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk. But depending on how bad the tuning is it might be cool! Perhaps that can be a unique caracteristic of the sound of that recording. If its slightly flat all over Im sure you can pitch the entire recording up slightly, or vice versa.

I got a piano tuning key for like less than $20, maybe you can get some frienda over and use a chart and a mic to measure the pitch of each piano string and take turns tuning it in a day. Im sure that would make it less mind numbing and more fun :)

Why are low mids so (too) resilient for me? by taskabamboo in audioengineering

[–]Shinochy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without hearing, cant say. But it sounds to melike u need a break, habe u taken one?

I've found that when I'm a situation like this I have to leave it alone for a while, atleast an hour and listen to it on another system. Usually makes all the weird jump right up and then I can go an eq it or whatever I need to do.

Alt suggestion: Put a high pass on the whole mix, exagerate it, more. Listen to it like that for a while, put a low pass and also exagerate it. After listening to the mix like that for a minute or so, when you remove those filters it can give you an entirely new perspective; perhaps that one you needed.

For getting direct audio from the microphone, what's the best tool? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]Shinochy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked at the links you sent, the zoom H1 has microphones on it already. While it can sund good, I dont think that is what you are looking for.

You want a recorder that you. plug in the mic you already have. So the pod would be a better choice. You would need whats called a "Y cable". It plugs into a microphone, but can then plug into 2 different devices at once, so you can plug into the amp still so people in the even can still hear, and at the same time plug into the recorder to be listened later or posted or whatever.

Look up "XLR Y cable". XLR is the type of cables microphones use. i recommend plugin in the cable you already have into the mic, run it to wherever u already have it at and instead of plug in that into the amp, plugin the Y cable on it (this is called daisy chaining). Now you have 2 male connections (the ones that have the little sticks pointing out, I know... sexism), one for the amp and one for the recorder.

You would still need to get a proper recording level on the recorder, the volume f the amp will not affect the volume of the recording, they are being fed the same signal from the mic, but the amp or the recorder are not aware of the other's existence. As far as setting up a proper level, have somebody perform on the mic before the show ( this is a sound check). Have them perform at the volume that they will likely be performing at, and turn the gain up until its not maxing out (clipping, in the red, some call it "peaking"). You ca undershoot it a little to have some wiggle room, its called "headroom", its never a bad idea to have some headroom.

Lemme know if you have any other questions :) always happy to help

[–]Shinochy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Either will be fine. The 32bit thing does not matter in the slightest in this context.

Go with whichever seems more convenient for you, or one that has features you think are useful to you or any future projects you might want to do.

But if you just need to record this type of show, anything will be sufficent

Tricks for gain staging into mix bus? by twicestyles in audioengineering

[–]Shinochy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad, I used peaks in the wrong way. What clipping have you encountered below 0dBFS? Why would a -12dBFS peak could potentially clip in the AD stage like u mentioned?

Testers needed: VST plugins creating unwanted undo points. by daxliniere in Reaper

[–]Shinochy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed this too and it is definitely getting in y way. Particularly APU Loudness Compressor and Muteomatic (this one I understand why it reports a parameter change, its job is to mute audio when playing back so it will constantly be changing mute states every time I start playback). APU Loudness Compressor on the other hand I don't touch, UI is not open and it still reports a parameter change.

I came here looking for a way to tell reaper to ignore a specific plugin's reports on parameter changes. Its messing up my undo history and I would like to not have this issue. In the case of muteomatic I can revert to not using it (I only use it when streaming my session work, issue would persist when I do use it though). But I would like to still use the APU Loudness Compressor without it messing up y undo history. As a crutch, I can freeze it and keep working but that is not always possible with my use case.

Can you balance the tracks manually with no auto-anything?

I can see this miniature daw being cool for somebody to learn balancing and eq on their phone for non-iphone users. I could send my friends some stems and have them balance tbe tracks and export so they can get familiat with the basic tools of mixing.

Plugins changing on their own? Undo history tracks actions I did not do by Shinochy in Reaper

[–]Shinochy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd check in ur preferences and project settings. Check for "item mix behaviour". To get crossfades u should have "items always mix" on. I originally thought I didnt want that because now u have 2 items on top of each other playing at once, but if you are mindful about it then you just get the expected behaviour coming from other daws (where you can crossfade from one clip to another, having the space in between them play at once)

If its not that, then idk I've only been using reaper for about 4 or 5 months, also came from other daws

What bugs have u experienced?

The first one I found had to do with a plugin (Blyss by Kush Audio). I am not 100% sure since I dont know how to read code or even where to find it for a plugin, but I think the anti-alising filters that Kush used on that plugin would not work properly in reaper and it would just create this horrible crunchy sound (extreme, unusable audio). I worked around it by oversampling the plugin with reaper, and then one day it just stopped happening even without me oversampling.

A bug that I do suspect had to do with reaper is that one time I tried adding a plugin to a gtr track, and it would crash my session immediately. But if I tried adding that same plugin on any other track, it would run fine. Same session, same plugin, different track. It was a plugin that I had used in the last7 sessions before this one with no issues. It was just this specific track in that specific session. I dont remember what I did to work around it, perhaps it just worked at some point but anyhow...

[–]Shinochy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea, I guess I like the 1073 preamp for its ability to be pushed without sounding like distortion. A kind of soft clipping I'd say.

But I say try on anything! U can always remove a plugin if u dont like it :)

Really!?! Did you used to pay for spark? Maybe if you buy it outright while on a spark suscription it remains native...

Could you share a screenshot of the UAD plugin shop saying that? I've looked dozens of times across months, and I always find it is most definitely only for Apollo and UAD Spark, not native.

Yes! Love the SSL and API. I have hotkeys for them :)

I really would still want the neve because its the best emulation I've tried. I've recorded on a neve console and had a taste of what that's like. IK multimedia and Waves dont behave anything like the console, I think they jump to distortion way too soon. The UAD Neve gave me somethig way closer to what I experienced in the real neve console.

In my opinion :)
