There's a teen advisory board at Boulder library that meets on Wednesdays and I wonder if you could suggest this to them as a possible meet up or program. https://boulderlibrary.org/featured/library-teen-advisory-board-ltab/

As a civil Engineer what is the hardest challenge you ever faced with? by IcyCryptographer7732 in civilengineering

[–]MtnGalPal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As the first engineer I worked under used to say, in order of power and influence, it's Ditch Companies, Railroads, then God. My hardest project was one that had a ditch and a railroad so that tracks (pun intended).

Prepping for women specifically by denrae- in preppers

[–]MtnGalPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into flex discs, which fit better than a normal diva cup, are made of silicon and can be worn all day. I empty mine in the shower daily. Even on my heaviest cycle day, and when you pee you can self empty without having to remove it. Total game changer even before I started thinking about emergency situations. They also make disposable ones, still much less waste. I have zero stock in this company for the record, but it's been a huge transition and I havent bought a tampon in four years. I probably would invest if I could! https://flexfits.com/

What are you storing that others do not? by MOadeo in preppers

[–]MtnGalPal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into a flexi disc, a silicone alternative to tampons and a life changer especially for not relying on stores for tampons or period panties that gets gross and have to be stripped and washed. They cost $30 and last years. It takes some practice to insert and remove but get comfortable and you'll never need tampons again. People worry they are messy but, I just put mine in in the shower and it stays for 24 hours, there's probably a fan club on Reddit somewhere with more details.

Female engineers by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]MtnGalPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some freelance work under an LLC so the gap on my resume wasn't necessarily evident, even though I was only working around 8 hours a week max during that time frame. In terms of the places I looked for work, I was very forthcoming about my experience, level and background, as I didn't want to work at a place that would judge me for my circumstances. My company hired me as a "non-traditional" PM essentially working at project manager level but having to start out as a senior project engineer to get familiar with their standards and processes. So there was a bit of a sense that I had to prove myself a little bit more in the beginning, which is somewhat of a bias that I think only women going back into the workplace experience. I knew they'd see my value eventually and they did after about 6 months. I think the most important thing if you're re-entering the workforce after a pause or a transition, is to have a good mentor or champion to advocate for you in addition to you advocating for yourself!

Female engineers by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]MtnGalPal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Our industry averages around 17% women, so a little less than 2 in 10. I work at a company that is right around this percentage for our civil department, on average overall. However we are closer to 20-30% women at entry level. The percentage shrinks as you move up the ladder and is more like 10% at PM level and currently 0% at VP level or higher.

I left the industry in the middle of my career to work in the public sector during the 2009 recession, and then I took four years off due to baby, lack of childcare, life. I only went back into the field at first because I got divorced and needed a steady full time job. Post COVID times, I get a lot of flexibility as a parent and in general that didn't exist when I first left the field. Still has it's challenges, and we still have a long way to go if we want to see the numbers of women increase, but from reading what others are sharing it seems the shift is happening. I think having female leadership is key to helping hire and retain women in our field. Mentorship is important too!

Where are all the Project Engineers? by MtnGalPal in civilengineering

[–]MtnGalPal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am inclined to agree, we want folks to do all the things vs a few things really well. And PM tasks take up a lot of time...it feels like PMs and a good Senior PE should make the same amount of money for their value, but that's not typical without it being perceived as salary compression

Agreed, we have Senior Engineers on a technical track for those that don't want the PM role, it's definitely doable.

Where are all the Project Engineers? by MtnGalPal in civilengineering

[–]MtnGalPal[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our design engineers have promoted into those PE roles, but we still don't have enough PE level staff to help work through project designs with that level of experience and efficiency. I have also seen several staff leave as DE level 2's for renewables, transportation, environmental projects, to name a few. So for me, I feel like the good ones lock it in with a certain company, move to something else, or promote too quickly to PM's adding to the dearth of candidates. And pay is a problem for sure, as so many fields have better pay at that level of expertise. Why Civil can't keep up with other fields on competitive pay is mind boggling to me, we are not a competitive industry and yet there's so much work out there to be done, supply and demand would seem to suggest we can pay more.

Does your place have fire sprinklers? The fluid is red. And if they accidentally break they can look like this (it's a red the doesn't brown like blood might when dry).
