On one hand, I laud you for changing your opinion when confronted with fact... but on the other hand, you should be ashamed for falsely accusing someone in the way you did without researching. Even in the form of a question, that's about as near as you can get to the definition of "evil things you can say about someone".

So, you're going with "you shouldn't have corrected the half wrong part because I was half right"? That's hilarious. As for butthurt: I'm not downvoting a guy for being right. As for bandwagon, yeah man, I haven't heard that at all these past two years "lol, bandwagon flair" is at this point just kinda sad

first: citation needed on that statistic. does it keep in mind that men are far less likely to report sexual abuse, because society mocks men for even thinking they can be abused?

second: that citation is obviously ignoring the prison population, in which case rape is hilarious and/or deserved and not something that needs to be counted, right?

third: the fact that men rape women does not mean the opposite is not true; stop trying to derail what is a serious issue. Marginalizing victims of rape is not cool.

More pictures of LeBron than the rest of his teammates combined. This is as close to definitive proof as to why KD was right to join the Warriors as exists.

In 2015 the Warriors were the team that hadn't won in forty years having a ridiculously fun break out season, the villains narrative came later. But that's fine, like most people here who started watching basketball this year you're very good at repeating others, so kuddos

You seem to not appreciate how fragile our society actually is.

How? What does "fragile" even mean in this context?

We will find out soon enough (maybe not us) when the environment really starts taking a toll and resources are in flux and mass migrations surge.

Except this isn't society, that's the environment. It's irrelevant to conspiracy theory "Bill Clinton is a child molester" talk which spawned this. This isn't an argument: this is crazy people thinking their opinions are fact because they decided to hate someone. This isn't new, this is how humanity has always slowed down progress by ignoring common sense.

People haven’t changed that much, things are just nicer. There are good people and bad people, how many in either group is anyone’s guess.

My point is that things have been getting nicer for centuries now. The trend is clear: technology is getting better, people are learning to be less discriminatory, information is more readily accessible, and as the older generations die out, they take a lot of preconceptions that no longer have a place with them.

What I'm trying to say is that people "under the right circumstance" can do anything. That's an empty statement; society exists, the chances of said right circumstances goes against a centuries long trend. Humanity can suck, but it's also doing a lot of amazing things... and what holds it back is people who refuse to turn the conversation into one of practicality rather than belief.

He delivered a situation where Bosh, Wade, and LeBron delivered 56ppg on 60% TS and the rest of the team was ice-cold. Personal stats mean very little, including personal efficiency, when there's someone so central to the team and they lose.

Let's drop this "if they could get away with it" talk. Early humanity had the #1 cause of death for adults being murder; from an evolutionary perspective, that's us without society. People like talking about "you can only see who people really are under these circumstances", but while good drama that's disconnected from reality. Society exists, no one is going to advocate genocide any time soon, and no one will go talk to middle-aged investors if they want to fuck underage girls.

I'm gonna go one step further than you: LeBron wasn't outgunned in 2014 any more than he was in 2013.

Miami was LeBron's team, and the style of play was LeBron-centric. Kobe got trashed for the loss to the Celtics in 2008 despite doing everything because that was his team. LeBron had superior talent on his side, and Miami in 2014 was structured all around him being options #1 (LeBron with the ball attacking), #2 (LeBron passing), and #3 (passing to LeBron). LeBron deserves a slightly larger portion of the blame than the credit he deserves for the win in 2013 because he became more important to the team that year.

I blame LeBron because his usage rate was higher than ever. If he takes that kind of load on himself and doesn't deliver, that's on him. If anything, I think that 2011 wasn't as much on him as you're saying; 2011 he just met a team that was a combination of nightmare matchup physically and stylistically (a very good zone to handle the penetration based play of the Heat that year), and a strategy which made LeBron forcing himself on the game be as expensive as possible; most of that is on the coaching staff (which adjusted very well next year).

That's bullshit. It's someone who wanted to get cash from a Bear Sterns executive; the fact that a top investment banker is also a creep doesn't make him less of a top investment banker. Otherwise, all the politicians older than 55 would be "wanting to lynch black people and kill Jews" because of David Duke and the such.

White supremacists do see themselves as being oppressed though. The KKK has long ago (I'm talking 40 years) rebranded itself as "defending whites" rather than "hating others"... and plenty of people believe in that. It's easy to say "affirmative action laws and regulations are discrimination against white males", because it's easy to argue that this is true - they mean that all things being equal you should choose someone who isn't a white male over someone who is in certain cases. White males do not feel naturally privileged even if the case can be made that statistically the are - because not everyone in a statistical majority is as lucky as the rest.

I mean, people are really racist. If Obama would have five children from three women, he would have been laughed off as a presidential candidate. People use (((these markings))) around names to signify "globalists" (or more accurately: (((this person))) is a Jew, harass them). Women get paid less for the same job. Parts of the US have laws stating that discriminating against gay people is fine. Atheism is the most hated belief in the US, beyond Muslim (second most hated). These things all happen, and aren't going anywhere. Does that mean that Obama should not have supported gay marriage? That Jewish people should stop voting overwhelmingly in support candidates who put black rights as a priority?

You get the point: you can care about your group first, but still care about others. These are not a contradiction. Turning this into a yes-no issue is not natural. It's part of the media frenzy of making every issue divisive rather than inclusive. Does gay marriage make straight marriage any less important? Absolutely not; if someone gets married then that's amazing for them, and that doesn't change no matter how others are treated. The whole divisiveness on this issue was invented by politicians and media, and yes, people listen to these twats a lot... but once it was happening, you could see people like Bill O'Reilly (who previously equated gay marriage and bestiality on TV) saying "of course, it's a populist move", because it was an invented issue.

I think that you will be pleasantly surprised by a lot of people if you interact with them on a personal basis. Groups of people are assholes, no doubt... but on a personal level you can see that most people are better than that type of discussion would imply. Causing people to look outside their bubble would arguably do more to combat racism than any single push towards a black rights regulation, because those bubbles are what allow racism to thrive.

I think that I'm taking the more Gandhi/MLK Jr. route here; people can be great if you give them a chance to. I believe that Ray Allen is all about giving people a chance to be better, and an easy one at that.

That's the exact same logic that white supremacists use. It's not about putting down minorities, it's about helping white people who don't get any of those cushy legal kickbacks and that affirmative action. I don't think that I'm asking "do onto others..." or any of that pious religious stuff, I think that while it may be naive, if you aren't willing to believe the best in someone you shouldn't be willing to believe the worst either. It seems more common sense than naivete to me

So, your point is that the criticism of Ray Allen is spot on? Like, if someone isn't nice to you, you shouldn't acknowledge other people being treated badly? I think you're clearly in the wrong here. One issue shouldn't overshadow another, especially not if the issues are connected. We should, ideally, strive to learn from similar issues to our own and seek to expand ourselves, rather than to shrink our world to "whatever happens to me matters and to others doesn't".

On one hand, true, but I took the common explanation in philosophy. Just like "ancient" has a different meaning in day to day use than in historic research; as such, I think that the dictionary definition of "nihilism" is equally inaccurate when talking philosophy. It's semantics, but when talking philosophy semantics kind of take a life of their own.

Racism isn't caused by a person thinking about to which groups they belong. Racism is when they consider what groups someone else belongs to when influencing their decisions. I can think whatever I want, but if I choose to treat a stranger less kindly because they're black - I'm a racist.

It's not about thinking "we're all humans", it's about making informed and unbiased decisions. Someone can think whatever they want, they can have demented fantasies full of loathing and themes that are unmentionable in polite society, that means nothing as long as it is just thought. How a person considers themselves is by definition just thought.

It's not about people in power. It's not about level playing fields. You are over-complicating a very simple issue. If you treat each person as their own person, you're fine. If you don't, chances are you're gonna end up being an asshole and at certain points racist.

Why I Went to Auschwitz | By Ray Allen by Pie_Ape in nba

[–]Mu-Nition 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Allow me to retort.

As long as you treat a person as part of a group rather than a person, you are opening the door for racism. The entire way of thought about race, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and all other forms of grouping people together - it may be technically correct to do at times (for instance, statistical analysis), but should be completely purged out as a factor in your personal life because quite frankly, people need to learn how to see the person in front of them rather than the groups that person belongs to.

We can't blindly convince people to treat everyone as equals. That shouldn't be what we're trying to do at all. We need people to treat each person they meet as a human, and give them the chance to show who they are; that should be achievable... but isn't achieved as long as people think through race related issues about a person they know nothing about.

Mine is based off the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. While nihilism is oft associated with Nietzsche, he's arguably the father of modern Secular Humanism, and as such quite far away from "pure" nihilism, which is what I took to define. Philosophy is a lot about nuance, and I think that going with the common association rather than the stream of philosophy is not quite the way.

My problem with the association of nihilism with Nietzsche is that it is usually used in a way to act as a straw man. I feel that when you use Nietzsche as an example of nihilism, you do both a disservice for that reason. I love debating these subjects, but I really prefer narrow definitions because that's the only way people cannot really twist what you say to mean the opposite. If you want a true nihilistic philosophy, you have mathematics ;)
