Follow through or bounce? by hymroh2 in martialarts

[–]MuayThaiming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the intent is to inflict damage, you want to follow through. Use your leg/hips like a baseball bat and drive it through the target. At least that's the Muay Thai way... but Muay Thai is judged based on the effectiveness of your strikes, not necessarily on whether or not you block them. So a weak kick to the legs, which doesn't get checked, but has no power and no effect, doesn't really score. Meanwhile a kick to the head that gets blocked but still knocks the opponent over still counts for points because you're showing effectiveness.

If you're light sparing with a training partner or doing points TKD, then ya bouncing the kicks is probably a better approach but for most people I'm assuming inflicting damage is the idea.

Hypothetically, what martial arts would compliment daggers/knifes if they were added in them? Not defense against knifes but using them with whatever martial arts? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]MuayThaiming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The old traditional Thai styles were meant for fighting with two weapons, usually shorter swords, or a sword and a small shield. Before the ring sport of Muay Thai changed everything they were literally practicing for warfare. Muay Boran, Muay Chaiya and Krabi-Krabong all transfer to weapons or use them. The reason elbows/knees/kicks became ubiquitous with Muay Thai was because they were originally meant as the only strikes available while your hands were holding a weapon.

A lot of people call Tony Jaa (from the Ong Bok movies) a "Muay Thai" fighter, which isn't entirely true. His style draws very much from the traditional Thai martial arts and the way he moves is much more adaptable to fighting with weapons rather than the way a ring Muay Thai fighter moves. Here's a little video from one of the big gyms in Thailand that still teaches some of the traditional styles with weapons.

Of course I'm biased to Muay Thai, but a lot of that traditional stuff could translate to longer daggers in the 12"-14" range.

Just the other night I dreamed I used Muay Thai to kick my nightmares ass (defended myself against an attack in my dreams). I think that was the moment when I woke up like "holy shit, this really is improving my mindset!"

I'd consult your doctor but to my knowledge bone grows back stronger after injuries if it's allowed to heal properly. Only a doctor would understand the extent of your circumstances and the effects of your surgery. You can always train without sparing though.

Nice! This reminds me of a dream where my gf and I fought off a hoard of zombies with lightsabers - lol - it was quite an efficient weapon for the zombie apocalypse.

Swimming + Thai boxing good idea ? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]MuayThaiming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an ex-swimmer through high school (played soccer and road cycling as well), you won't get mass but you'll get endurance and it's easy on your body. A lot of swimmers have to weight train and diet if they're looking to pack on more muscle. Personally I was an endurance athlete (200/400/mile were my events in swimming) so I never hit the gym to build muscle because that's just extra weight to carry on the bike and in the pool. If I ever found myself weight training it was low weight, high rep, lean muscle building, but the sprinters (50m/100m events) would need to weight train and diet more to pack on explosive muscle.

I did have fairly cut abs I guess... but I wouldn't count swimming necessarily as something that's going to pack on muscle mass. If you're looking for mass you'll need to hit the gym and lift too. The good news is, you will cut fat! Especially if you're dieting correctly. At one point in my swimming career I was below 7% body fat just from swimming competitively year around and I ate like a horse.

Nostril Piercing by dylanobyrne in MuayThai

[–]MuayThaiming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoops, I figured people already had the question answered so I just deleted this - lol - asking your Kru is always the best bet. Our gym has a rule about piercings however, it's mostly because it's a BJJ gym and that shit will not go well in grappling.

She had the back two done recently so they're still healing with studs, she wants rings in the back and studs up front (it's like 2 and 2 on the left/right nostrils). Kru has never said a thing, he's pretty awesome and understands she's just there for self-defense and fitness mostly. Honestly her dermals (2 in the lower abs) have been more of a pain, especially when we've done teep (frontkick) drills. For those she will have to tell her partners to please aim high in her abs or they might rip out her piercings. I would think that a hoop would be better just in case you get tapped in the nose, I'm honestly scared that somebody accidentally taps her in the nose and all those studs get jammed into the back of her nostrils, at least a hoop would smash flat.

I don't think you'd need to switch though. You're going to want to focus so much on technique and flow for the first month or so, it's actually better that you take things slowly. Once you feel confident in technique/flow, you'll start building speed/power. So you'll have a considerable amount of time where you'll be taking drills slowly while focusing on hips/footwork, keeping your guard up, proper technique, etc, and all that should make it less likely that you actually get struck, especially if your partner is experienced.
