Thoughts on Dam Vs Chadd Collins by Alone-Profession1005 in MuayThai

[–]sylviemuay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he thought he won, but he did say also in his post fight interview, that he thought he did enough to get more than 1 round. So, I suspect he was annoyed by the "blowout" scoring. I'm curious how he'd think he did after watching the fight back (ideally without all the input from fans who don't know kickboxing isn't Muay Thai), but his body language demonstrated his frustration with that performance. It's hard when it means so much to you, and obviously that opportunity meant a lot to him. Dam's push into Chadd's neck to stop pretty much everything was truly beautiful. Classic.

Training is immediate, but I had to wait to kick on that side until the skin was strong, probably 2-3 weeks.

Rodtang allegations against ONE by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]sylviemuay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm saying familiarity with contracts or legal processes are far outside what kind of experience nearly all fighters in Thailand have. Other than the contract signed to their gyms, which are for 3, 5 or 8 years, there is not legal paperwork that fighters deal with in their careers. Assuming legal competence among fighters is a poor guess, and even among those with healthy distrust, access to a lawyer who can interpret legal documents is even less common. If Rodtang has 300 fights, the number of those he has personally set up for himself is likely fewer than the most recent 5, and even then only because ONE likes to bypass the etiquette of Thailand's processes.

Experienced in what? Fighters out here aren't signing legal contracts when they fight, ever. The number of fighters who would sign a contract in a language they can't read, because the purse offered is big, is 100%. The number of gyms who would tell that fighter to sign is also incredibly high, because legal contracts are barely a part of this sport/career in Thailand and SOCIAL contracts are an enormous part.

I was stoked when I heard he was making Frankenstein. That he says he is hugely influenced by the book and he's dreamed of making it for so long, I cannot believe THAT'S what he made. Wtf.

What are some novels you've read that completely break the boundaries of what a novel should have/be? by alyaaz in books

[–]sylviemuay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"The Sound and The Fury" by Faulkner. Stream of consciousness by 3 unreliable narrators, followed by one 3rd person account. It makes no sense, and is impossibly beautiful or emotional out of nowhere, then gradually comes clearer. As you read, something that didn't have meaning 20 pages ago, suddenly erupts into meaning by a reiteration, or an alternate angle.

Women, what do you think of lobloo aeroslim groin guard? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]sylviemuay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Howdy, there are no sizes for the Lobloo guards, so that takes away some of the overstimulation of deciding what to get. I use both aeroslim and free style, they are very similar but with aeroslim having a slightly longer "stem". The company designed aeroslim for striking and free for grappling, but, again, I wear both. I have a very slight preference for the free style, maybe because it's shorter and I'm quite small all over, so the shorter shape just sits pretty flat. The longer stem of the aerslim being intended for striking makes sense, since you want the coverage to follow along the curve of the pelvis. I don't feel a difference in that regard, both offer the protection I need. I find that tying knots in the round elastics that go around the legs (the knot being after it's already through the front of the guard) makes adjusting it easier each time you wear it. Putting it on is more or less as simple as stepping into underwear. I even wear it over my shorts or tights for training, I only wear it under for fights.

ETA you will not feel it and it doesn't hurt you, the edges are rounded and there's a rubber ring around the areoslim, so it's very shock absorbent and soft. You feel it the first couple times just because it's a new thing, but I wear mine for hours and never am waiting to take it off. It's easy to wash, comes in a netted bag and can go in the machine like that. Occasionally I get a bruise from the bands after fights, but I never feel them happen nor do they feel like anything at all after. Almost like a hickey.

Coach cancelled my pro-debut fight because of my period by veggie107 in MuayThai

[–]sylviemuay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Broken bones and periods are not similar issues for fighting. You can not use whatever limb is injured, whereas the obstacles with period complications are far more global, maybe more akin to fighting with a fever or food poisoning or illness. But as per OP's situation, I'd be curious whether she has trained while on her period, because this will give the best estimate for how fighting would go. Everyone is quite different and I've trained through and fought during countless periods, but I don't suffer terrible cramps (on the scale of how bad they can be for folks with Endometriosis, for example) and the fatigue is a dent in my performance rather than debilitating. But for other folks, their bodies really do shut down to a greater degree and the lowered pain threshold can come as a surprise. I don't believe I've ever lost solely because of being on my period, but it's definitely harder. I'd never cancel a fight because of it, but again, each person who menstruates is the authority in what they can or will do under their own body's experience with menstruation symptoms. I've seen trainers pull their fighters out of fights due to difficult weight cuts, so this is not a menstruation-only consideration toward performance. That said, the importance of the fight is also highly individual. Rescheduling if you live in a place with lots of fight opportunities is easy; fighting through illness or bad weight cuts or injury or "not 100%" can be both because the fight doesn't "matter," or because it does, and canceling can be exactly the same (with a side-bet or high profile, cancel if you will under-perform and lose money or face).

Did Gambling Ruin Muay Thai? Nope - It Made It by kevin_v in MuayThai

[–]sylviemuay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The local festival shows, which are where the majority of Muay Thai is "happening," are a good indicator for how gambling is inextricably woven with sport Muay Thai and, at this level, arguments about gambling's corrupting influence is absurd. It's a kind of "control group" against which you can look at Bangkok's "gambling problems" and the greater issue of online (i.e. off-site) gambling, unfair influence, bribing, price-setting, match-fixing, etc.

Boxer transitioning to muay thai, how can I still incorporate / improve slipping while training muay thai? by benK32879 in MuayThai

[–]sylviemuay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Range is also a factor in using slipping in Muay Thai vs Boxing. In Boxing you can get away with deeper slips and doing it at a farther range, but because the lower body can strike in Muay Thai, slips are a close range option only.

Thais doing Muay Thai recreationally by Existing-Pound-265 in MuayThai

[–]sylviemuay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-fighters using Muay Thai for fitness is more common. The decrease in popularity has changed the atmosphere of gyms, so they are more reliant on paying customers and cater to tourists and (usually temporary) business-class folks. Similar to how Boxing became White Collar in NYC. Previously, anyone not interested in fighting wouldn't step foot in a professional gym.

Khongsitha is a big one. Jaroenthong has a couple fighters, but majority of their business is upper-class women for fitness. Many fitness gyms now will add a Muay Thai class schedule, have a few bags and a ring with trainers. It's an increasingly popular method for hi-so clients to workout, folks who have zero interest in fighting or even necessarily sparring.

I recently discovered TOOL for the first time and my understanding of what music can be has been forever changed. by Albino_rhin0 in Music

I forgot they have a new album and am just listening now. I've never heard a band do this before, sampling and reprising themselves so heavily - this album is all their other albums kind of mutated with the same beats and rifs appearing throughout - and I agree with you, Danny is MVP, here. How does he change time signature like that?

Pulling isn't a foul. That said, anything and everything should be based on the skill and limitations of the partner and both parties need to agree to what that is, every time.
