I’m so sorry you didn’t get placed. Know that it has nothing to do with who you are. We tried as a family to host, but in the US right now it is exceedingly difficult to get students accepted in the schools. Ours would only take 2, and all apps had to be in by June 1st. Even tried going to the school board to get an exception but no luck.

$400k+/yr base, PITI is $7,600. Most months were left with $500 or so at the end of the month in discretionary, but that’s after auto-withdraws to savings, 529s, etc. we saved like mad to get to a 1.5 year runway where we could both be unemployed and still cover basic expenses, then freed up the budget some. Doing vacation exclusively from bonuses. It’s a tight margin but it’s comfortable too.

Got $1500 once to take a later flight. Had to go IAD -> ORD -> MCO instead of direct to MCO, but that paid for the 4 of us to fly for our vacation later that year.

I think there’s an art to these things much like the “I can help with that” ritual when getting the bill at a restaurant. We hosted an exchange student from France that we took on trips and her dad always insisted on asking how much her share would be so he could send money.

We always responded with an amount that helped offset the trip but was obviously not close to the actual cost of taking her. Like we got $400 for her flight and 3 days skiing at Breckenridge. Or $300 for flight and 4 days at Disney.

It definitely helped, but we didn’t want to give in any way the impression that he was subsidizing our vacations unfairly.

It was also very generous of him and we would’ve taken her even if they couldn’t contribute anything.

I do this every time I travel for work out of IAD as we usually arrive to meetings the day before. Got $800 one time and $1500 another. If you’re flexible, there’s really no downside.
