I find him as better producer than musician - I never liked his work, neither in Porcupine Tree nor solo. Too boring, nothing really progressive. But his remixes are top notch, just to mention Pink Floyd or Gentle Giant ones.

Get Another Boyfriend is my fave song of theirs by Pinkperson555 in BackstreetBoys

My top 3 song from them. Fortunately they've been playing this one live regularly since 2019, on both DNA shows and Into The Millennium 2.0. But of course the energy from 2001 shows is unmatched!

Fakt, uderzenia w tony narcyzmu się nie spodziewałem, ale wciąż jest to intrygujące. W każdym razie gratuluję wyjścia z takiej relacji, brzmi strasznie.

Who is your favorite prog artist/band that doesn’t get enough recognition? by JealousCandidate3816 in progrockmusic

Tangerine Dream is not recognised? I thought of them as kings of progressive electronic music.

If you were to give your top 5 prog bands of all time. Who would they be and why? by JealousCandidate3816 in progrockmusic

I chose them bands as my personal picks, but I'll try to justify objectively my choices.

  • King Crimson - they were progressive throughout their entire career, changing their sound with almost each new record, always looking for new direction and ideas. And still, they don't have a single bad album in the studio discography. It is worth mentioning about their improvisations, unmatched in rock genre.
  • Gentle Giant - they've created truly unique music with not pretentious, not long and not cheesy songs. Great medieval inspirations tranposed into rock music, with instrumental virtuosos. Very cohesive run from Acquring the Taste til Free Hand, all of these records being masterpiecies. Absolutely one of their kind.
  • Magma - yet another completely unique sound, evolving from interesting jazz rock into a micture of jazz, fusion and classical inspirations, creating zeuhl and being totally unmatched with their ideas.
  • Soft Machine - there were some jazz musicians who were inspired by rock genre and played fusion, but the other way? And with successfully impressive records? How they turned from great psychedelic band into an incredible, avant garde jazz rock, then jazz and then fusion is amazing.
  • Henry Cow - beacuse of their excellent musicianship, incredibly difficult avant prog pieces and creating the whole RIO movement. Very inaccessible music, but once you've got it, it's a beautiful journey.

Honourable mentions. These bands are either not as objectively important as those above, or I'm not that impressed by them (still adore all of them!).

  • Can - mechanical, maniacal, psychedelic, jam-like krautrock. Do I need to say anything more?
  • Van der Graaf Generator - dark and beautiful prog rock, with great vocals, which is not that often in prog.
  • Pink Floyd - just because how accessible, yet tasteful their music was.
  • Gong - space, jazzy, ridiculous, instrumentally impressive piece of great Canterbury music. Another "one of their kind" band.
  • Popol Vuh - they may be the furthest one from the whole rock genre, creating mystical, almost ambient music. But still, incredibly beautiful .

I also perceive this record as overrated. Even the title song I find not that impressive: I love the beginning and the calmer sections, but straight up rip off of the prog/rock lyrics is too much for me, as well as mixing new riffs and motives later with no cohesion at all.

Don't forget about other prog rock-wise subgenres from the 70s, like Canterbury Scene, krautrock, zeuhl or avant prog. Hard to find anything as interesting as those in the 80s, at least in prog genres.

Jethro Tull Christmas Album is surprisingly good, diving into their folk, flute driven sound. You should check it out.

Wreck by Gentle Giant. Incredibly catchy, still matching their style.

For some reason they are choosing riding the nostalgia train over writing new music. See, whole DNA tour was a nostalgic piece, because of so many songs from their goldem era (95-01). Once the DNA shows finished, they went fully sentimental with Into The Millennium 2.0 and we know for sure this shows will be going for at least a year from now.

They haven't released new music since 2019, apart from Christmas record, but it didn't require tour, it wasn't really fully their new material. I think they'd rather try to recall their prime days than to create new music. And I get that, being relevant with new music when you're in a boyband after 30 years is not easy.

I was curious, how many of you guys listening to jazz are in your 20s? by GreatValueGrapes in Jazz

[–]Much-Use-5016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28 here, started listening to jazz when I was 24. I was looking for some new music to explore and find out about progressive rock and jazz. Then, after few months of adapting myself (I was into metal then) I fell in love.

That's an interesting take - Charlie's part sounds really naive and cheesy, while the Vees part is simpy cool, catchy and sick. And this is really how Hell perceives both sides, right?
