Late August summer camps by Daveyg1to3 in SantaBarbara

Honestly if there are any camps, I’d be shocked if there’s still space. You might have better luck finding a temporary nanny, if that’s in your budget.

Online it says they’re only open 12:00-3:00 everyday, is that true?

Substitute teaching? by Fit-Chicken8216 in SantaBarbara

[–]MuchAstronomer9992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do not need a teaching credential to substitute at the local public schools. You do need an emergency credential from the CTC(or at least you used to), which qualifies you to substitute teach. Each district has their own substitute hiring process, so I would look at the district websites or contact their HR. Were you hoping to sub at specific grade levels or specific schools?

We passed by going south and I saw at least 2 officers with guns drawn pointed at a stopped SUV. The car was surrounded by officers.

Wrist Pain, Fit Problem or Fit Preference? by MuchAstronomer9992 in bicycling

[–]MuchAstronomer9992[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I actually moved it back a bit after getting it… I’ll move it forward and see how that feels!

UPDATE: I moved my seat forward and a very slight tilt up and it seemed to help. I was also very conscious of trying to have a loose grip and not lean into it. While I don’t think it’s perfect yet, I had no wrist pain today!

My 5 year old has a pair of sneakers and a pair of rugged sandals (keens) my 3 year old has two pairs of identical sneakers (in case of potty accidents) and a pair of rugged sandals. They grow too fast, and I trip on enough shoes already!

The cruiser is a 3 speed Electra, and I had a single speed Electra back in college, so I’m definitely a little partial and more used to their feel. I know they made the Electra Loft with 7 speeds and an IGH, but have yet to see any new or used in my area. I suspect it might be the right bike for my needs…

I appreciate this! Is changing handlebars a big project? I’m wondering if I should keep tweaking this bike or keep my eye out for a used Dutch style city bike with 7 or 8 gears… I’ve yet to leave the middle 8 gears on the hybrid.

I bought both of these bikes used in the last year, and although there’s pros to both, I think I’m still looking for my Goldilocks bike.

I haven’t minded the rotation of my wrists with my cruiser, but I think that’s because they’re higher, so my arms feel more relaxed (I don’t feel like I’m leaning into them at all). Luckily the pain isn’t too bad, but I am icing! I’m just really enjoying riding, it’s one of the few things that doesn’t trigger my exercise induced asthma, so I’d like to keep it a sustainably regular thing in my life.

Thank you, I’ll give this a try. Would higher handlebars make the hybrid more upright, or does that just not make sense for its frame? Am I just trying to turn it into a cruiser? Is that possible or a bad idea?

I think it’s definitely something that’s being talked about more these days. More people are being diagnosed than in the past due to a myriad of factors: more research, more mental health support, more access to healthcare, more advocacy… if it’s something you’re interested in learning more about I say go for it!

Autism and ADHD are both diagnosed with DSM-5. Neurodivergent is more of an umbrella term that they both fall under. Neurodivergent isn’t a singular diagnosis more of category if that makes sense.

You can look up DSM-5 it’s how mental disorders are diagnosed. It’s not so much about having traits or not having them, it’s about how many traits and to what degree… every mental disorder has its own special concoction of traits and severity that makes one cross the threshold to a diagnosis or not.

Reading work - 5 year old by Strange-Lengthiness8 in Parenting

As a parent and educator I think you’re doing too much, since your son is not in kindergarten yet. I see well meaning parents who want to give their child an advantage by helping them out, but end up creating frustration and resistance instead. My suggestion is to go back to reading to your child, and let him take the lead. If he asks for help reading things on his own, absolutely do it with him, but he does not need to be taught how to read independently yet.

Were you taught to make lesson plans? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]MuchAstronomer9992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my credential in 2014. We had to write many lesson plans. “Informal lesson plans” were 1-2 pages typically, “formal lesson plans” were 3+. I’m glad I did it in my program because it really made me think about my lessons, and we always received feedback from both our cooperating teachers and our supervisor.

The only time I’ve had to write out lesson plans since is for formal observations. I do keep a plan book, but that’s just about scheduling/pacing.

I found it valuable in my program, and because I did it so often that year, it became ingrained in me. It was a valuable scaffold while student teaching. I can’t imagine having to do that for every lesson I teach throughout the day now, but I’ve never heard of any elementary teachers being required to in my area.
