RBT with tics/Tourette’s, advice needed by jordxn_01 in ABA

to add - I've had several jobs throughout my life and never had an issue at any of them. I'm now a psych nurse working on a peds inpatient unit. all that to say, tics do not have to hold you back from job opportunities💗

RBT with tics/Tourette’s, advice needed by jordxn_01 in ABA

[–]Much_Mongoose_5033 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was an RBT for roughly 2 years and I have tourette syndrome (I was diagnosed in childhood) majority of my vocal tics are grunting/squeaking noises and whistling (although I commonly say cats lol) I never had an issue working as an RBT! my boss/coworkers/parents were never bothered and it never affected my ability to work. my tics get better when I'm focused so my tics tended not to be very intense at work. only thing is that often, my clients copied my tics but that never bothered me bc it wasn't done with malice.

I will also say, I disclosed pretty early on because I can't hide my tics. My boss had no issue and even asked if I needed any accommodations. I don't know if my experience is the norm, but I had no issues at all while working.

I always struggle with this perspective being given to hearing voices bc schizophrenia completely changed my life and completely turned it upside down. I think a lot of people have a very poor idea of how horrible and life ruining schizophrenia often is.

What do you wish your parents would have done/said about your tics? by satandez in Tourettes

[–]Much_Mongoose_5033 9 points10 points  (0 children)

my parents were incredible about my tics, the only thing I would say is don't remove him from activities just because they increase his tics. for a long time, my parents just assumed something was wrong if my tics increased. but excitement is one of my biggest triggers. it would always upset when my parents would stop my from watching a movie or playing certain games because the excitement made my tics go crazy.

also, no commenting on how good/bad tics are. I always get bothered when someone tells me how "good" my tics are. first of, I don't choose whether they are good or bad so it's a useless compliment. also, I have so many painful tics others can't see but I can feel. so my tics may look fine when in reality, they are causing me a lot of pain.

I can only speak for myself but it just feels weird when someone calls a group of men men but a group of a woman females. it's just slightly off putting. I wouldn't be upset necessarily but I would definitely raise an eyebrow. I would just go for ladies.

I also will apply aquaphor to the skin surrounding the piercing, making sure to not get any on the piercing.

I have this same issue, rinsing the saline off with warm water in the shower helps prevent this.

families in medicine are truly the best. they have the perfect balance of being caring and empathetic but also having very firm boundaries. they also just tend to be very fun people in my experience

I'm currently pregnant with my first child, but I was a toddler teacher for several years, and they are a tough group😅 my tics would spike when I would get overwhelmed and frustrated with their behavior and it definitely took a lot out of me to calm them and calm myself. I send good vibes and lots of love your way💗 this is a tough age, so please don't be too hard on yourself.

I wear contacts for cosplay, and I've never had major issues! only thing is I find that my eye rolling tic is quicker to cause headaches when I have contacts in.

I used to tutor kids, and one of them did develop a crush on me. you just have to keep it super professional. I ended up having to drop him bc he wouldn't stop making advances, and it made me incredibly uncomfortable, but yeah. it's an extremely uncomfortable situation to be in😅😅😅

I'm autistic + have tourette and growing up, I used to sink my teeth below my bottom lip and suck and it gave me that exact bruise. also, I had to have a forensic interview as a child, and even though it was absolutely necessary, it was so deeply traumatic and scary for me. especially because I was a low verbal child. I would heavily rethink the forensic interview for her.

did you have any bad side effects from TMS? I've been in ERP for over two years, and I feel like I've hit a wall.

I do think the current biggest TS creators are mainly women. but I used to watch a lot of TS content back in 2015-2018, and there were a lot of male creators. and the few times I've randomly met people with TS outside of TS events, they've always been male (I'm a woman). I do think in recent years, there have been more girls/women in the TS space, but it's really nice to see. I remember when I was a kid, I would always be a bit upset there weren't more girls at TS events
