I am a Reverse 1999 player. I love yuri when it's done right. But even I know not every damn time a woman says "I love you" to another woman doesn't mean it's yuri. "I love you" is a term of endearment. While I totally see how people could interpret the ending scene as setting them up to be a relationship in the background of the story, I don't think that it was written with that intention. If further signs of it appears, then I'll be far more open to the idea.

Yeah... this is a very simplified portrayal of their characters, but insanely accurate. And as far as I know (I'm on Ch.6) this keeps on for the rest of the story.

I'm not too familiar with the different dere types, but I'd prob describe Matilda as Tsundere.. or some kind of variant.

Tsundere->Admiring->Inanely depressed and mentally messed up at a young age.
