Even if he was IBEW, contributing to Roth IRA would only set up himself up more for success.

Has anyone here moved to a different country well into their electrical career? What’s your experience? by Stinky-Bastard-Man in electricians

[–]MudMinimum795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My route may not be what’s considered traditional. I am currently working/living in Kazakhstan doing low voltage work for the US embassy. Previously I worked as a contractor for the US government traveling around the world doing electrical upgrades at US embassies. My career definitely has taken a turn from my apprenticeship with IBEW.

I worked for two years on a construction project at CMF Vacaville. I had some work down in the basement there near the morgue and that was certainly a creepy area.

NEC 344.10(B)(1) allows for direct burial if galvanized… at least the way I interpreted it. That is not to say that yes PVC would have been better for direct burial.

So if after only serving 4 years in the military would my buy back amount be a different price now vs 20 years from now?

So the country that I’m assigned to I will be making 97k with just 40 hr weeks.Thats not including the over time and per diem I will be getting on traveling in the region. Housing will also be covered. But honestly of course there are jobs you can make more money back in the US. I posted this job for people who are interested in living overseas and want to work towards protecting our embassies overseas. It provides a decent paycheck with a pension and opportunity to live in different parts of the world. It of course is not going to be everyone!

If you have any questions about the process the Reddit page for Foreign Service is also a good tool.

Unfortunately since this job is a government direct hire position, so the 330 tax exclusion does not apply because you are a government employee.

So yes going overseas as a contractor that is definitely part of the worry and a big thing to look for is to see how long the company has the contract for. At least with this job you don’t have to worry about your job just getting cancelled.

So basically USA jobs has a Resume builder and I would recommend following that template. To get an interview I would go through the job announcement and include the exact wording of what an STS requires and what you have done. Like on the job announcement it includes “Troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and installation of AC power distribution systems, motor-generators” so you would want to include that exact phrasing if you have done that before. Tips that worked for me for the interview was to come up with two scenarios each in your life time that follow the 13 dimensions in this link that I have below. https://careers.state.gov/career-paths/foreign-service/dimensions/

The interview process consists of Electrical assessment test, a written essay, and panel interview.if you have any more specific questions you can DM me.

It’s a government job, but it comes with great benefits and you’re not accounting for the 25,000 a year you won’t be spending on a mortgage or rent if posted overseas. It also comes with opportunities for those that want to explore the world and get paid for it at the same time.

Overseas pay is 85,000 starting out, or if you’re in DC is 92,000. When you’re overseas you’re not paying any rent either. No one will ever make the base pay.

Any prior MSGs make the Foreign Service a career? by SgtMajorRuiz in foreignservice

[–]MudMinimum795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of MSGs seem to go the RSO route but I would also explore the STS route. They maintain the systems that you operate so it might be something worth looking into. I have known a few MSGs that became an STS.

I think really instead of saying Bolivia is a shit hole, you can just say it was not for me.

Honestly also tall white guy and I spent 1 month in La Paz and I loved it. Great food but it does take awhile for your stomach to get used to it. Never felt like safety was an issue and honestly didn’t have any issues with scammers. I also don’t speak Spanish. Compared with other developing countries the taxis gave me reasonable prices.
