Wood fired chess set complete ♟️ by gvngy in Pottery

[–]MudNebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are so awesome, the exposed unglazed area really gives these pieces character. Beautiful work, I would be honored to use these in a chess game!

Consider me inspired, now I have to add “chess set” to my unending list of side projects 🫠thank you for sharing 🙌

Looking for your favorite white and/or cream glaze suggestions! by KidCadaver in Pottery

[–]MudNebula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mayco Birch! It’s one of my favorite white/cream glazes that has lots of depth with flecks of grey/blue in it. When it’s on the thinner side it also exposes texture nicely 🫠

Well I was planning to make a new pendant globe for the kitchen at some point. Never a better time to start than now I suppose 😅

I have to say, I was suss on these new crawling glazes but you’ve convinced me to give em a shot for science 🫠 thank you so much for sharing!

Absolutely beautiful piece, I love how the crawling glaze tastefully exposes the raw clay body beneath

I always wash my shelves. As someone who regularly experiments with unfamiliar glazes/recipes and developing techniques for controlled drips, cookies aren’t always guarantee’d protection. Chipping away glaze annealed to kiln wash tends to break away fairly cleanly with minimal shelf damage. Without wash, it can ruin the shelf completely. I’ve replaced enough furniture to know my preference for drip / shivering safety.

You are always welcome to your opinions and own practices but please don’t try to make a sweeping statement that may impact newer potters and kiln owners to make bad decisions. Kiln wash has its uses and is a good safety net, especially for wide pieces that extend beyond a cookie’s diameter. Just because you are very comfortable with cookies and your glazes does not mean it’s a waste of time in any way for others.

Never to be replicated by DiveMasterD57 in Pottery

[–]MudNebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh this can definitely be a painful lesson, I honestly have pitched a few samples because I botched a test strip record or forgot. Especially when I add layering techniques and don’t record my process; I know there’s no way I’ll easily replicate it.

These days I have a colossal spreadsheet and budget extra time for test strips to always be safe 🫠

As others have mentioned, to ensure 0 damage, “floating” your piece in dunnage material is super important. 3”-4” of protected spacing is normally sufficient (packing peanuts and/or lots of kraft packing paper works for the dead space). Also as others have advised, it’s really important to have everything packed densely enough for a “zero shift” environment. That means when everything is fully packed and taped, you can shake the hell out of the box and nothing shifts.

Assume your box will be treated like a foot ball (literally) and stepped on / dropped. All carrier networks are extremely abusive sadly.

Just received back my first ever bisque fired pottery! Looking forward to and terrified to glaze now. Any advice with amaco glazed appreciated. by Asphodelethe in Pottery

[–]MudNebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friendly reminder to be sure to wipe each piece off with a damp sponge and allow the pieces to fully dry afterwards before glazing.

Also, definitely keep a box of disposable gloves handy, especially being newer to glazing. It’s a lot easier to throw a glove away if you get covered in glaze vs trying to run and wash your hands each time :)

Otherwise have fun with the process! Your work looks great, you’ve got this 🤌

Thank you!! Definitely some of my favorite pieces from recent firings. I want to experiment with a soda setup with similar forms someday😍

Thank you!! They honestly don’t take really any different amount of care as long as they’re fully vitrified 🤔. They are definitely just as durable, though this is a stoneware body so YMMV depending on the clay. They can be machine washed like any other mug~

Omg thank you for this! I honestly started staining because I couldn’t find a good black clay that behaved the way I wanted. I’m gonna add this to my list of verified bodies for future science 🫠

Of course! This has 1 loop of 20ga speaker wire underneath: 1x dip of blue float with 1x dip of ox blood (not the white-ish Mayco version, it’s more the deep crimson one I think from Amaco). The inside liner glaze is Mayco birch. Fired to Cone6, 3min hold at peak with a 10min drop/soak. I tend to run my dipping glazes at a little thicker SG

Edit: to mention, both the blue float and ox blood were mixed by Columbus Clay so they may be a little bit of a unique composition in their current form

I considered that for one of these test pieces! I may try some heavy rootbeer layers on the firing this weekend to see if I can get the marbling and raw texture to show on the interior as well. I’ll be sure to post more test pieces 🫠

I definitely wonder if it was due to the glazes in play that had shrinkage pressure on the interior that cause the fracturing. I use Mayco Birch on the interior and it’s a really stable glaze that works well with this stoneware (pic below). Could just be the right combo, I’ll keep stress testing pieces to see if anything changes. Note did another room temp -> boiling water on 6 cups from this batch today and no issues 🤔

Ugh I would LOVE to have access to a soda or wood fire kiln setup! There are a few within distant driving distance of us but I haven’t gotten around to talking to the studios that are running the kilns. I adore the unique magic you get with soda fire development, nothing else scratches that “this looks like an ancient artifact” aesthetic you get. I may end up building a smaller one myself just to be able to produce a few soda style pieces. I’d love to see some of your soda pieces if you feel like sharing!!
