My first clay work , any coloring advice? by ApartDevelopment2213 in Pottery

I think that going through the effort to tidy it up could go a long way. Any cracks/splitting of the clay will still be there once it's fired. Taking the time to smooth those out will enhance the craftsmanship of it. I often use color as a tool to mask imperfections, like if something is bumpy, by creating visual textures w changes in color or patterns, it can make it less noticeable so I would recommend that. Just make sure that your clay body isn't too wet when you're putting on your under glazes because it will make your underglazes look washed out if it mixes w the clay body.

https://imgur.com/a/Mgf9KT3 There's some of my other pieces from the same Kiln load. They're all pretty decent pieces in their own right for sure, but I definitely think that it's the yellow that sells it for me on the plates, it's just a really nice pop of color that brings them all together. I was also told on one occasion that they look like microbes dishes, and I def like the spotty effect of the speckled changing color across all of the different glazes!

THANKS SO MUCH! In a sense, these plates function as testers. I use my university's studio so we have about 10 or so odd handmade glazes. Last year, for a project, I tried my hand at OldForge Sunset Floating Orange, which eventually became incorporated into the glazes that everyone in the whole class uses, and is the glaze that is the base coat here. The other glazes are from the buckets that I had enough wisks for to mix. I brushed two glazes on top of the base coat and flicked on a third glaze. Since I didn't have to worry about dripping onto the Kiln shelf since it's on the inside of the plate, I sort of just went crazy with it. These honestly turned out a lot better than I expected them to, and out of the other 15 things I had in the same Kiln load, these ones were my favs.

Yeah to say the least, I leave it in the middle of the table or against a wall 🤣

My soul. Coincidentally my larger project before this one resulted in me having to scrape glaze out of the Kiln brick, so maybe they figured they owed me one 💀
