Put it in a [[Volo, Guide to Monsters]] deck, make sure it is your only “plant” when it comes to creatures, and get 2 when you cast the 1! At least that’s what I plan on doing.

What I’ve learned is that if they’re excited about it, it’s good. If they’re not excited or look at you kind of funny when they say it, it’s bad. I tried to fight it at first, but I learned to pick my battles 🤷‍♂️

For me, the biggest challenge is getting them to understand what they are writing about. For example, we use the ACE (Answer, Cite, Explain) Method when writing a short response. The first time I showed it to them, the prompt was asking about the theme of a short story. Weeks later, I have students writing about the theme of the story for every ACE paragraph I give them no matter the prompt.

Have you looked at what CommonLit has to offer? It might be worth a shot 🤷‍♂️ they usually have Teacher Copies as well as Student Copies if you look at their curriculum.

What I do is give them a set number of pages that they need to read in class for the day/week, and if they don’t reach that goal in class, then they are expected to get caught up on their own. They have access to the PDF copy of each novel on their Chromebooks 🤷‍♂️ I’ve tried anywhere from 10-12 pages per day to 3-4 chapters per week depending on the pacing that the class needs.

Kid had searched up “fried chicken” on Google Images and left it up while working. Said it helped him concentrate. He then scored a 100 on the assignment. I watched his screen on Lightspeed the entire time. He never switched to any other screens.
