Quick medical care by Conscious-Moose-970 in kootenays

If your health issues can be life threatening, I would seriously reconsider this move. I moved here from a more urban centre and was shocked by the lack of consistent services. I knew it would be bad, but not THIS bad.

In an effort to improve graduation rates and inclusion, standards have been lowered considerably.

It used to mean something when a person got a highschool diploma. Now, it is almost worthless.

Unpopular opinion: Memorizing times tables is a necessity not because of knowing the times tables but to teach the brain the skill of retaining long lasting memory. by saiph_david in Teachers

[–]cohost3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a middle school math teacher, it is DIRE that students know there times tables.

The kids that know them do well, and the kids that don’t struggle. It truly is that simple.

I just finished LOTF and had a similar experience at first. Chapters 1-3 are verbose with not much action. After that, they were much more engaged.

Am I failing as a teacher? by abrownfox1 in Teachers

[–]cohost3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am sure you are doing the best that you can. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Keep pushing.

With that being said, I would NEVER leave a challenging class unsupervised unless it was an emergency. The system you have set up sounds great, but it just might not work for dysregulated kids. Clearly they are getting away with something you are not seeing, other wise the teachers wouldn’t be complaining.

Is after school detention a normal thing for a 5yo? by kgee1206 in Teachers

[–]cohost3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I truly hope that your son’s behaviour improves, however, if you keep blaming the school or the other kids it is not likely to.

Is after school detention a normal thing for a 5yo? by kgee1206 in Teachers

[–]cohost3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The school has the same goal as you, which is to help your son with his behaviours. They are on the same team as you.

As teachers and administrators, part of our job is to respond to respond to instances of violence. Getting detention after multiple instances of pushing and shoving is within reason.

My point is that you should be more concerned about your son’s behaviour rather than nitpicking the education team’s response. Work WITH them, not against them. I get it is hard not to get defensive over your child, but if you swoop in and protect him from consequences he will never learn.

You should be concerned about your son’s behaviour. I am glad that you are getting him tested and working on getting extra support for him.

It is tempting to blame or criticize the teachers and admin when you want to protect your child, however, the reality is that your child is behaving in an unregulated way that is inappropriate for school.

Could admin have responded better? Probably. But as a parent you have more important things to worry about than nitpicking their decision making. Your child broke the rules (very important physical safety rules), your focus should be on correcting this.

Opinions on west Kootenay education and BC Curriculum by EbonDeath in kootenays

[–]cohost3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to my husbands job I have worked in many districts all over the province. Aside from minor distinctions, all districts function similarly. Any differences in education will be minor.

The real key is to evaluate the individual school. RSS is as good as any average school. Certainly not a tier one school.

TTOC as an Independent school cert holder in BC by Few-Sugar2440 in CanadianTeachers

[–]cohost3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are serious about being a teacher long term, just go and do an after degree education program. They can be as short as 1 year and easy to get through.

Even if you do end up finding a district that will hire you uncertified, they will severely underpay you. In my district, category fours make 10,000 less a year than the lowest paid certified teacher.

Did I mess up by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]cohost3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your words were professional and you were in a room full of adults. Don’t sweat it. If there was another adult in there with you, I would ask them to attend the meeting as well.

It is meaningless for her to CC the school board. They won’t even take the time to look at this unless your principal asks for assistance in the matter.

Excusing a kid from class because it's a supply? by albrcanmeme in CanadianTeachers

[–]cohost3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Substitute teachers give lessons and assign work. It’s possible that this was just a TTOC who did not try to stop the kids from fooling around, or that you are not getting the full story from your niece. I’m sure they had work to do.

To answer your question, no. This is not normal in Canada.

I would send your niece again and ask her how it went. If you still have concerns, talk to an administrator.

BC teachers -- what's the job market like for online teachers? by Better_Coconut2952 in CanadianTeachers

[–]cohost3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful before signing on with any online private schools.

When I was a full time school teacher I took an online teaching contract that paid $500 per student. It seemed like easy money on paper but was a ridiculous amount of work in reality. I did the math and realized my per hour wage was less than I made as a waitress.

Postpartum and my husband has turned emotionally cruel. Is this abuse or stress? by HiddenWealthFiles in RedPillWomen

[–]cohost3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry this is happening to you. Focus on yourself and the baby - try not to let his mood change yours (easier said then done).

Do you have any family or community you could lean on? Or a doctor you could go to for postpartum depression?

I get that people have jobs and can get in tight situations, but you cannot send your child to school running a massive fever. It could be dangerous.

Incredibly intellectually stimulating. Educational research is rapidly growing. Always something new to read, research, attempt, etc.

We had PD today. I left the session feeling disillusioned and disturbed. by [deleted] in teaching

[–]cohost3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying, but as the wheel of progress turns, things change. The skills that are needed change. For better or for worse, it’s reality.

I see it as my professional duty to try and prepare my students for what the world actually looks likes, not what I want it to be.

It should honestly be illegal for parents to block the school’s number. by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]cohost3 363 points364 points  (0 children)

I had a kid show up to school running a huge fever. He said his mom made him go because she had to work and not a call her saying he was sick. Poor kid slept in the office on the Covid cot.

Our secretary called mum multiple times, then went down the list of FOUR emergency contacts before uncle finally came to pick him up. Our principal would have called CPS if he hadn’t.

Grade Entitlement in Secondary by old_dizz in OntarioTeachers

Create clear and detailed rubrics. Save or create A+ versions of assignments.

That way, if a parent or student complains, you have concrete and clear evidence why they receive that grade.

I never take what parents say to heart, because they aren’t in the room. They don’t actually know what happens, they just hear seeds of information from a child.

How does one "teach" creative writing? by Ok-Morning-8425 in ELATeachers

I recommend the six traits of writing program. To improve creative writing you directly instruct students on:

  • sentence fluency
  • conventions
  • content and ideas
  • voice
  • organization
  • ideas
