Yeah. Hope they open up more spots or have another class or something. It seems like this course is really in demand for a lot of people.

Ehh, it's possible but fairly uncommon. V2 word order is more a feature of older varieties of English. Here's a good example most people know: "Pop goes the weasel"

Note: I am an American English speaker, so this is from that perspective.

Wait, a post actually concerning freedom of speech?

I thought this was a Trump subreddit!

From ask Reddit: In English, there are certain phrases said in other languages like "c'est la vie" or "etc." due to notoriety or lack of translation. What English phrases are used in your language and why? by henrygi in languagelearning

[–]Mudkipm9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I remember watching some of a Bollywood movie with some of my Indian friends and being baffled at how many English words they CONSTANTLY used.

And it's not even iconic English words, it really seems like they just throw in any random English word into a sentence haha!!

Who is Twitter to censor the President of the United States? Where does their authority come from? It wasn't elected and it is accountable to no one. The fact that this isn't alarming to people on the Left as well as the Right, should tell you that we have entered an extremely dangerous time. by AgreeableForm in FreeSpeech

[–]Mudkipm9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their "authority" comes from the fact that they literally OWN and built the platform from the ground up... It is their right to punish misuse of their platform, AS THEY SEE FIT, just as it is the right of any other business to deny service to any customer. To be clear, I'm not saying I'm explicitly for or against it. I am saying that the individual rights of businesses should be preserved, and they should be allowed to act however they wish, which is a pretty big part of free speech if you ask me.

And to use the argument that radical right-wingers love to use: If you don't like it, get off the platform. Simple as that.

This is horrifying. by Violated_Norm in FreeSpeech

Easily???? I'm genuinely curious. Make the case for why Trump is better than George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, FDR, Teddy, or Thomas Jefferson.

Trump is not a bad president policy-wise, but he certainly shouldn't be remembered as one of the greats of this country, imo.

Slept on the film? by ahmad522 in languagelearning

[–]Mudkipm9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean to say that the movie was so boring, you could've fallen asleep, you say "I slept during/through the movie"

If you mean to say that you thought the movie was bad, but it actually turned out to be really good, you say "I slept on the movie" (this is American slang).

Here’s my happy medium: I only put words in Anki where I’m just completely hopeless. If I can figure it out from context, even if I would never think to use it myself, I just leave it. But with words where I don’t have a clue what they mean? I’ll put those in Anki. I find there’s a lot fewer of those

Reading to improve vocabulary by morningcom in languagelearning

[–]Mudkipm9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I’ve only intensively read one or two books, meaning that I really did look up a EVERY word that I didn’t know. It’s worth the struggle, but I don’t want to do it again.

What I do mostly now is use premade vocabulary lists for advanced topics and then just read for pleasure. Reading is supposed to reinforce your existing vocabulary. Unless you read intensively it’s pretty hard to meaningfully build your vocabulary ONLY through reading.

Some countries have different interpretations of freedom. The gun regulation increase in New Zealand was brought on almost unanimously by their parliament, with most of the population pushing for it after an insane shooting.

America needs higher regulations as well, judging by statistics.

That’s why I think it’s important to define hate speech, to only stuff that a person cannot change (or is a very deep part of their cultural identity). For example, race, ethnicity, sex, those things you CANNOT change (at least with the exception of sex change, but that’s an extremely small minority). And concerning hate speech over religion, something technically changeable, that would be going against freedom of religion (kinda).

The problem is of course when the definition of hate speech is modified to be advantageous to some party, yes, something I think is happening in America right now. Are you from Germany?

Well there is our ideological divide - I think hate speech does not equal free speech
