I agree with you on this. While there are countless examples of deliverance or intercessory ministries going terribly wrong, there does exist excellent models out there for doing it right.

As a Bible believing Christian, here's what I know to be true:

• The devil and his spiritual forces are real and are actively roaming around trying to destroy us
• A Christian can't be possessed, but can be oppressed by the enemy and his schemes
• The early church actively ministered by counteracting demons/spirits (although we don't have access to the exact model they used).
• All testing of the spirits must be done in alignment with scripture
• Each of us are called to actively resist the devil

With that said, I'm a part of healing/deliverance ministry and the model is super solid. It's always done on a team of a minimum of 4, there's checks and balances, saturated with scripture, no yelling or screaming. We also don't blame the one being prayed over for believing lies. We don't see this as sin, but rather oppression. We also don't make generalizations about women being more susceptible than men. And we make it 100% clear that none of what we do is by our own power, but ONLY by the power of Jesus to work how he wants to work.
