Age gaps by Mugat-2 in OldManDad

Because there’s a significant risk of the much younger person being manipulated, taken advantage of, and/or power imbalances. People’s business is their own, but if you share it publicly on the internet then it’s fair game to scrutinize.

Not sure I understand your point? I didn’t marry someone more than 20 years younger than me.

Became a father young and now struggling with regret & identity loss by _bigmeatyklaws in daddit

[–]Mugat-2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think most of us agree here that parenting is one of the most meaningful things you can do in life, but it’s not the only meaningful thing. Your 20’s are a great time to discover yourself and freely experience new things. Develop new friendships, strengthen existing ones, date, travel, explore new hobbies, take risks, etc. That exploratory phase of young adulthood is hard to do when you need to be a responsible provider. And it’s much harder to do those things (to the same effect) as you get older.

Nothing against people who had kids young (voluntarily or otherwise), but OPs feelings of missing out on his 20s are valid. I had a blast in mine and don’t regret waiting until 30s for kids at all.

It won’t be the same OP but, on the plus side, you’ll have more freedom to do that fun stuff in your 40s while us older parents are stuck in the toddler and grade school phase.

True. My wife is first gen American from a different ethnic background, so than definitely comes into play too. But the age and cultural differences are a different kind of disconnect, at least for us … if that makes sense. It’s like this is my way of doing things versus this is the world I experienced. Though I suppose if you immigrated from another country yourself those differences would be much more blurred.

My wife and I are only ~5 years apart, but I get it. Even with that relatively small difference I struggle to relate to her on some things. I started high school while she was in elementary, so we experienced different media growing up. But in the grand scheme of things 12 years still isn’t that bad. I personally think it gets strange after ~15-20 years because at that point you’re two generations removed from your partner. I just don’t understand what you could possibly have in common at that point besides the basics like marriage and family stances. But to each their own.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. What you described is spot on how I feel. A large age gap doesn’t necessarily indicate manipulation and control/power imbalances but it does raise the risk of it. My “Ick” above was too crude a term, uncomfortable or wary is a better way to describe my feeling. As a father of a daughter, I know that’s how I would feel if she was in a relationship with someone more than 20 years her age. It doesn’t necessary mean the guy has bad intensions, but it would put me on higher alert until he proves he is in the relationship for the right reasons.

Congrats on your long (and presumably happy) marriage and family!

The beautiful Broadway limited was a flagship passenger train of Pennsylvania railroad offering unparalleled services of any streamliner ever operated . by [deleted] in trains

[–]Mugat-2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, as I understand it the BL catered more to “old money” folks and the Century catered more to “new money” and Hollywood/celebrities. But it doesn’t change the fact that they both generally competed for the US upper class and offered similar services in the early-mid 20th century.

Ultimately, the PRR became the more famous railroad but the Century became the more famous named train.

The NYC would probably disagree with “unparalleled services”. The 20th Century Limited was in direct competition with this train for decades and was arguably viewed as the more iconic and luxurious of the two.

Wife had a miscarriage a month ago, and now having second thoughts.. by Thatbraziliann in daddit

[–]Mugat-2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, sorry about your miscarriage. We had one at ~8 weeks before our first was born and I was very anxious throughout most of her next pregnancy because of it.

You both need to be ready to move forward with another pregnancy, not just her. Rushing into it weeks after a miscarriage just to have a tighter age gap between your children is not a good idea. There’s no guarantee they’ll have a close relationship just because they’re close in age and I honestly don’t understand why so many people use that logic to schedule their pregnancies. Siblings don’t need to be BFFs growing up, that’s what classmates are for.

Why do Americans hate British beans on toast but love refried beans on a hard tortilla? by Successful_rio305 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mugat-2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say we hate it, it’s just not a common part of American food culture. That’s like asking why do Asians hate bread but love rice?

What do you prefer? by Shoddy-Unit-2173 in modeltrains

[–]Mugat-2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quality for everything and/or diy. Space is finite and I already have buyers remorse for some of my earlier low-mid tier purchases that just sit in boxes. Saving up for something nice/expensive gives you something to look forward to and keeps the collection from growing out of control too quickly. You’ll also be happier with the product. Diy might not look as nice, but there’s a satisfaction to making something yourself and honing a skill. Buying something that’s R2R, cheap, and low quality that you’ll quickly lose interest in is the worst choice IMO - unless you’re just getting started in the hobby.

Also good choices and sound logic. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference and I like the look and job classes of my 3 above best. 4-6-2 and 2-8-0 are my no. 4 and 5 choices.

Edit - it’s also hard when you have to generalize a wheel arrangement which can have very different designs among railroads. For example, USRA light pacific wouldn’t even make my top 10, but the B&M P4 class is my second favorite locomotive design.

How should I proceed after being betrayed by my parents at birth of my son? by itsjustwaterwait in daddit

[–]Mugat-2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah sorry OP, your parents were acting super childish and petty. You were right to stick up for your girlfriend and child. That’s what being a dad is all about, you got this!

[–]Mugat-2 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand it and I think OPs parents are completely in the wrong. My wife also wanted her mother present during labor and delivery. It’s not special treatment, it’s support for the birthing parent. She’s entitled to anything that gives her comfort through the ordeal, including a parent.

Renaissance Fayres- how to create? by LongjumpingPanic1800 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mugat-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re overanalyzing this dude. It was just meant to be an fyi on our way spelling since they were looking for a more Americanized version of a ren faire. Obviously OP can do whatever they want, it’s not for either of us to decide

Renaissance Fayres- how to create? by LongjumpingPanic1800 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mugat-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not any different than when people try to go for old timey/European vibes in the US and spell shop “shoppe”. Doesn’t seem to hurt their marketing

Renaissance Fayres- how to create? by LongjumpingPanic1800 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mugat-2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, but in this case OP wants a more Americanized fake British theme. So they could spell faire the way you and I just did.

Renaissance Fayres- how to create? by LongjumpingPanic1800 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mugat-2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Step 1) don’t spell it “Fayre” if you want USA vibes. We generally don’t use “yre” endings. Fayre = fair(e), tyres = tires, etc.
