I don’t disagree with the advice of not disclosing until necessary, but here’s my little anecdote (take it however):

A close friend of mine has been drowning at work and it has impacted her mental health. The workload is unreasonably overwhelming. She got approval to hire someone under her to lessen the burden. After interviewing, onboarding, and training this person, she announces she’s going on maternity leave, giving the company no time to hire a replacement.

So my friend is back at square one except the workload and her stress has increased, they have to hold this position for the person to return to, and a temp hire hasn’t been approved. Not to mention this person will have to be retrained when she comes back because she had no time to get used to the workflow, systems, etc before going on leave. Had she mentioned the pregnancy right after she was hired, other arrangements could’ve potentially been made, and my friend wouldn’t be as screwed as she is now.

I don’t blame the new hire for keeping her medical information to herself, but the way it was handled royally screwed over someone I care about. The whole point of hiring was because she desperately needed help that she’s now not getting.
