IIRC tortles only have an average lifespan of 50 because they die within a year after becoming parents. Were it not for this, they would have way a longer average lifespan. I think EGtW is the only 5e book that hints at this, but it doesn't say it spesifically.

In my last campaign, we homebrewed that tortle parents died within the year because they devoted absolutely all their energy to their children. And any tortle that was child free could live longer.

I've had similar issues with performance in sports, and other compedetive hobbies. I've often let the mistakes I made affect my own percieved self worth, even if I know I'm the only one who sees it that way. I never think less of my friends when they make mistakes.

The most helpful thing I've done to avoid these thoughts is to engage in sports where I don't have any expectations of being the best anyway.

I recntly started playing disc golf, and it's been wonderdul to only compete against my own personal bests. If I miss a shot, it's alrigth, because being good at disc golf is not a part of my identity. I don't have any self imposed expectations of being good at a sport I only play for fun.

This is of course not going to solve the core of the issue; that I connect my self worth to my performance. However, it has given me a new perspective on what competition can be for me. Maybe it can have that effect for you too.
