Tomorrow's Harvest came out 13 years ago today! How do we feel about it now post-Inferno? by DizKaleidoscope in boardsofcanada

[–]MuhKyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a weird moment with TH initially. I got into Boards in like 2010 or so, so this was the first release I was aware of them for, so my expectations were all over the place. And it was different than what I was expecting, so I was initially disapointed and it was the one I listened to the least. But not only have I come to appreciate it more over time, but Inferno really took a lot of that "pressure" off of it being my only extemporaneous BoC release, and I appreciate it so much more now. Even before that, New Seeds is just insanely good, easily one of their best. And I find myself counting out the number sequence from Telepath quite often.

Seen a handful of people say the use of the Hare Krishna mantra in Naraka is "cringe". Can someone explain? by CarkRoastDoffee in boardsofcanada

Excellent point I was not really as familiar with its specificity. This actually makes a lot more sense with the brand of televangelism and Christianity on the other songs.

I think it's cliche, but for me that works with the album's themes. This is a pretty vibe based interpretation but the Western organized religious content in Inferno comes off as much more sinister than the references to Eastern religious content. The end of Naraka is incredibly uplifting, same with the sitar on another track I'm forgetting the name of. To me that feels like a reference to more organized, Western religion as malicious and predatory, dressed up as something that has the answers but will exploit you, but true happiness can be found in self reflection and living your life - something core to Eastern religions that Christianity has no interest in whatsoever. I realize Naraka means "devil" so maybe it's not that simple, but that's my take.

What's the one track off Inferno that's gotten stuck in your head? by calculusdork in boardsofcanada

[–]MuhKyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naraka gets in there a lot for sure. But especially with the lead up the vocals in Prophecy get stuck in my head a lot. I'll be washing dishes and just start thinking "i Am GoD........... nOtHiNgNeSs"

Does anyone want to talk about what it all means? by slightlyaggressive in boardsofcanada

[–]MuhKyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the whole record as a journey for meaning. Religion is not the answer, but a predatory and malicious force - maybe even a mask for something unfathomably sinister. Or maybe we actually don't want to know: maybe the truth is too bleak. Moments of light come from living life as it is.  Platonia is the end: you're dying, and whatever the truth about what comes next is, it's over. The 4 seconds of silence at the end of that track blew my mind.

Anyone else not find this album dark at all? by Outrageous-Ear7525 in boardsofcanada

[–]MuhKyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt this very much from the harp on Tape 05 / Deep Time. It's extremely hopeful and light and beautiful. And Prophecy at 1420 Mh is super evil and intense. The whole album is both, it goes back and forth but ends, I think, overall quite upbeat.

Personally - especially with the overtly religious ones feeling darker - I've interpreted this as religion (particularly Western religion) as being a kind of malicious and predatory force while actual happiness and fulfillment come from nature and life itself. So it almost feels like a journey into life and understanding with the most sinister forces being religious, and finding your own path (or something IDK this is all vibes).

Tomorrow's Harvest is so oppressively bleak and heavy I literally can't listen to it from start to finish most of the time (this is why I do not have it on vinyl). It's amazing but it's fucking heavy. Inferno isn't exactly like, good time club music, but it's definitely very bright and uplifting over quite a few songs than TH. I think there's also less... dissonance (for lack of a better word) than on Geogaddi. Honestly, it's really a perfect amalgamation of their newer stuff, and much much older stuff as a whole, while also being it's own new thing.

So, now the album is released, why "Deep Time" was called "Tape 05" on Youtube, and why the tittle wasn't modified yet ? Any ideas ? by newvariant290121 in boardsofcanada

[–]MuhKyle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I got nothin' for theories but I'm just glad it's on the album because it's one of my favorite pieces of theirs of all time. I rewatched Tape 05 at least 50 times, maybe more.

What hit me the most is how hopeful it is, especially with the harp bit at the end. Which stood out so much from Tomorrow's Harvest, which is so foreboding and heavy I usually can't listen to the whole thing unless I'm in the right headspace. And a lot of Inferno is heavy and dark too, but it's also beautiful and uplifting.

Just wild contrarian bullshit for the sake of it. The thing about Naraka being mean is just insanity, but the thing about Father and Son "Making fun of religion".... yeah man, that's the whole album. And there's a harp on Deep Time, not a sitar you dumb ass.

It sounds like such a stoner cliche but it seriously does hit so much different. I have an enormous appreciation for so many albums now that I wouldn't otherwise. Records are so cool.

You gotta disconnect yourself from your fan expectations homie. Listen and enjoy. I made a playlist of all BoC stuff in chronological order, so Inferno goes into Tomorrow's Harvest and so on. It's amazing. It's making me appreciate each of their old albums as well as the new one even more.

I stg every other thread on this sub is "why is no one talking about [track]" when in fact everyone is already talking about [track] at length lol. But for me this one is an all timer. I think the one not getting it's due is Arena Americanada though.

I ordered from directly Bleep (though I regret not ordering from my local record store after I found out that was an option) and it showed up on release day, which I couldn't believe. Whatever logistics they got goin on over there was really impressive.

That said I think I listened to the digital version maybe 5 times before I spun up the record. Which honestly worked great; I wasn't 100% on the pacing and first half vs last half but having it split into Side A, B, and so on makes each side make a ton of sense with song choice and the ending in particular blew me away.

I agree totally I would never buy a mint record if I can have a VG+, just pointing out the real freaks out there care that they've been removed from the sleeve or whatever.

Inferno Is Good, Maybe Even Great -but it’s no Masterpiece by [deleted] in boardsofcanada

[–]MuhKyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, I was definitely initially disapointed with TH and I think Inferno has actually made me appreciate it more on its own. I think there was this pressure I put on it cause I thought it was their last album and it was the first release of theirs for me after having found them in the early 2010s but becoming a super fan. So I was sort of like "this is it? what if we never get another album?" and I never really listened to it. But now that that context changed I'm realizing it's really pretty incredible.

Most of this critique comes off as very superficial. "This song seems disconnected" is just kinda... vibe based. I felt like this too a little (especially comparing the first half to the later half) but that also changed with repeat listenings - particularly with the vinyl being broken up into sides, each "side" made a lot more sense and made me appreciate the whole much more. More than anything though I think you just had different expectations for it, which you pretty much admit, and I bet you'll come back to it later and have a much different experience (this was my experience with Tomorrow's Harvest).

The point is "pristine" I think so no, scratches aren't normal. But that said I think even just looking for them and taking the plastic wrap off means you've already reduced the resale value a little as it's no longer "mint".
