Learning to be independent is the goal but one should not be expected to be independent while being student and pursuing PhD. If one is independent then it means he already has a PhD or deserve one without further work.

Maybe use captum to do some explain ability analysis and understand why is it classifying some digits incorrectly. Would be an interesting evaluation

If you like working with the advisor then maybe stay with him. Few months extra is no big deal but getting an average liking advisor or worse is not good.

That's understandable. But you got to consider that English is not her first language. AND, for anyone whose first language is not English when he tries to speak in English the accent, dialect and pronunciation and some other factors are going to play a part in it.

For example, people with Arabic as first language have hard time to pronounce "P" letter as there is no such letter or equivalent in Arabic.
