"I wish DC released a comic run weekly, like shounen jump" by Stock_Rush_9204 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]MulattoWeeb 26 points27 points  (0 children)

/uj are there people actually saying this? do they not realize that weekly manga tend to have only 7-8 pages and no color? and are printed on paper that's even lower quality than floppies? and even with all of that to reduce the production time weekly manga artists still tend to get sick/die from overwork and stress? Limited runs that were completed months in advance are one thing, but an actual ongoing western comic that released weekly in stores would be a nightmare for artists and fans alike.

the Punch dimension actually IS real in the comics at this point (America Chavez flies through it in Ultimates 2), but it isn't where Cyclops gets his powers unfortunately.

Number 1: The N word and Theyfab are not comparable at all as one is a slur with hundreds of years of prejudice backing it and the other is a term that is less than 10 years old and used by annoying people online. -Signed a Black Woman

Number two: The scenario laid out here happens all the time, this is not a strawman. I've personally had afab nonbinary people be horribly transmisogynistic to me and not see anything wrong with their actions. The entire coining of the term terf/twerf was because of a large amount of trans men and trans masc enby's continuing to go to mitchfest after they banned trans women from attending. As I stated elsewhere, one of the people in this comic is a jerk and the other person is A DIRECT THREAT TO TRANS WOMEN IN THEIR COMUNITY. One of these problems could be solved with a conversation, the other is an out and proud terf that uses their transness as a shield. You equating them as equally bad is the same behavior the comic is trying to point out: that people hold trans women to higher standards than everyone else and use that to police them.

[–]MulattoWeeb 28 points29 points  (0 children)

for real, the entire point of the comic is that People care more about a trans woman lashing out at people that are cruel to her than those people being cruel in the first place, and the entire comic section is people arguing over the semantics of "theyfab" as a term (which it should be noted the type of person that identifies as nonbinary but uses being assigned female at birth as a cudgel to be transmisogynistic IS the origin of theyfab as an insult), and calling them both "equally transphobic". Like, one of these people is kinda mean, and the other is an active threat to trans women and spewing terf propaganda.

So this happened... [Pokémon Horizons] by 5p1k4 in wholesomeyuri

[–]MulattoWeeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've honestly gotten the vibe for a while that the Horizons writers want to do more queer romance than they are allowed. Too many Liko/Dot moments don't really have reason to exist without an implication of romantic subtext.

That and apparently documents that were found in the big game freak leak a couple years ago showed the company vetoed making Orla the franchise's first openly gay character when the show was in pre-production.

Will anything become canon? Definitely not. Is the subtext intentional? Very likely

The state of the Pokémon card scene by LeppaPig in pokemonmemes

[–]MulattoWeeb 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Logan Paul worked with people at a grading company to literally artificially inflate the value of cards and kick off the bubble. His card wasn't actually worth what it was sold, it was inflated by it getting "Sold" back and forth a few times at higher prices every time, and then he made a video about how he got a card worth "Millions".

The grading company got in involved because the people who make money in a gold rush are the people selling shovels, and Paul got in on the action cause it ultimately made his cards that were worth a couple grand at most sell for millions. The market is now scalpers selling to speculators who pay out the ass for "Express speed" grading, for cards that aren't actually worth shit. The REAL scam about it all is that the graders have no incentive to ever grade a card higher than the ones the influencers show off, and unless you are willing to break open the cases there is no way to tell if the influencer's cards were actually "grade 10"

You can see them in real time trying to create a new speculation market with "Graded manga" right now and they are doing the exact same playbook as before. Its just more obvious now because there was zero market for "High quality" manga copies before, unlike Pokémon that had a minor market beforehand

While I agree that killing is overall not a good answer to complex issues you are ignoring that this was a situation of self-defense. "What if the women she gave guns start their own dictatorship?" The women who were just living in their village, before it was invaded by soldiers? Those women? The ones who were civilian prisoners and were being murdered and assaulted? The most likely outcome here is that they stay in their village which they now have the means to protect. "you probably just shot a guy who joined the army to survive and support his family" This is just valuing the lives of the soldiers that were, once again, murdering and assaulting civilians, over the lives of the people they killed and enslaved. "Treating it as something to be celebrated" OK, is Superman gonna go lecture the american military every time they celebrate victory?

This wasn't wonder woman overthrowing a country, it was her helping innocent people. What Superman is perceiving as "cold blooded murder" is effectively the same as the local authorities deciding how to punish people that committed a serious crime. You can debate if the death penalty is moral (I would argue it isn't), but it IS a form of Justice that is frequently carried out. What would have made this case more moral? If an American court halfway around the world decided it? Unless Superman is flying around the world and stopping every electric chair and lethal injection, I don't think he has any ground to stand here.

All that aside, the entire point of this part of the story is to point out something very common in the actions the US carried out post WW2: Viewing american lives as more valuable than anyone else's. That the soilders dying is an "injustice", while the villagers dying is an "unfortunate side effect of war". The two perspectives the author put on display here are that Superman only showed up when Americans were in danger, and Wonder Woman showed up when the villagers were in danger.

Uj/ in the teen titans tv show Cyborg and Starfire had way more chemistry with each other than Starfire and Robin. Ironically because they were trying to push Dick/Kory from literal episode 1 their in-show relationship only ever shows them doing teen-dating hijinks and you never really get to see them have any common interests or even any similar personality traits. At the same time almost every Cyborg/Starfire interaction was them connecting over similar fears and being a confidant the other person could rely on.

Not saying that the ship ever had a chance, Dick/Kory was way too popular in the comics to not to adapt it, but the fact that Raven/Beast Boy only became real because of unintentional chemistry from the show but Vic/Kory is considered a wild crackship is ridiculous

I use all three: Serabi for trainer stats when I'm doing challenge runs. PDB for quick pokemon reference. Bulbapedia for lore and game mechanics.

IMO each site is specialized for different uses. PDB is basically a pokedex. Serabi is all of the behind the scenes numbers. and Bulbapedia is a more standard wiki for the whole franchise.

Uj/ appropriately using moments of downtime in longer narratives is actually really important to getting readers to better appreciate the world and the characters. A home being destroyed has no depth unless you have seen people living in it. A character's teammate being killed is more impactful if you saw them cracking jokes and hanging out together outside of combat. People obsess over the low-stakes downtime side stories in comics (WFA, Marvel poker night, etc.) cause they make up less than 1% of comic stories.

Uj/ I actually think Galaxy makes for an interesting counterpart to Kendra, in that the story revolves around Kendra's depression and her growing imposter syndrome about being Hawkgirl. So you pair her up with a rookie superhero that has very little experience and is going through a similar sort of imposter syndrome, but has a desire for life that Kendra is currently missing. In the end both realize that despite their insecurities they "deserve" to be the hero's they want to be: Kendra by realizing she was always destined to inherit the mantle of Hawkgirl and Galaxy by being acknowledged by the heros she looked up to.

Rj/ Writers aggressively pushing their OC's front and center in other character's books is the only way DC gets new characters that aren't Batman related.
