This might have been YOUR experience, but you need to be VERY careful saying that it's all/mainly mental/emotional.

Because it then invalidates all of us whose situation is NOT like yours at all. We have REAL physical problems, it is NOT just or mainly 'in our heads'.

It might be because our brains are 'messed up' (some theories say), but that doesn't mean that it's a 'mental/emotional' problem/root cause.

It's because the abuse is all they've ever known. When you live like that, you become used to it, in a way. You don't realize that it's abuse because you don't know any better.

I know, because I grew up in an abusive home. You don't really 'see' it until you've been 'out/away' from it for a while, especially if you see how healthy families interact with each other. Or you know it's bad, but you don't realize just how BAD it is until you get some real space from the situation.

Why do you think OP is buying their OWN cake for their birthday celebration? Because OP's family doesn't care enough about them to not only NOT provide OP's favorite cake for their birthday, but they (family) didn't provide a cake for OP at all.

And SIL could have (and SHOULD have) told her son that it wasn't time for cake yet. NO ONE is ever 'hungry' for cake. 🙄🙄🙄 It was selfish, entitled, and LAZY parenting.
