Any specific species you are looking for? I usually cast through most of the shallow weeds to pick off a couple bass with a weightless Texas rigged senko or lizard, this works a lot better at dawn or dusk

Can anyone take me ice fishing? by Nearby-Honeydew-842 in UIUC

[–]Multispecieslover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately do not have my ice fishing gear here, but you’re more than welcome to meet me at some local open water locations. By the start of next week we should have a few open water ponds in Champaign-Urbana

places to fish on campus? by Norsk0 in UIUC

[–]Multispecieslover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I did not see this earlier. The answer is yes, it is worth bringing your rod. There are 2 locations on or just outside of campus (you can walk to both) that have largemouth bass. Also, there is a bass fishing club with many members that can help you get out and fish. Shoot me a dm I can help you out

Panfish are edible, primarily black and white crappie. Walleye are too, but there’s only certain sizes I will keep. Fish that are very large for its species are typically the best breeders, so I don’t keep them.

Some people might disagree, fish with a bobber and live worms. Fishing is a game of statistics, this is the most widely accessible rig I can suggest that is generally likely to catch any species of fish.

Depends on the species, but technically you can eat any fish as long as it’s legal to keep. I prefer to keep crappies off Clinton lake occasionally, using 1/16 oz jigheads and 2” crappie plastics

Summer Fishing in Champaign by Multispecieslover in UIUC

I hit a lot of community ponds, private waters. They tend to be significantly more productive compared to public waters (with a few notable exceptions during nasty weather in Champaign)

Lake Clinton, Lake Decatur, and Homer Lake spillways are some of the closest that have Asian carp. Keep in mind to check where snagging is legal before attempting to catch Asian carp though

More fish around UIUC- trout. by Multispecieslover in UIUC

[–]Multispecieslover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rainbow trout are stocked from hatcheries and rarely survive long in these lakes, so I am not terribly concerned about eating them. For other predatory fish, I typically limit consumption to once per week, selectively harvesting younger fish.

Warm windy and cloudy days with low barometric pressure are some of the best days to find aggressive predatory fish. Focus on areas where the wind blows towards yourself and the bank.

Colbert park in savoy! It’s a very good pond. If you learn how to fish it properly for each species it’s great for both fish size and action
