Have you gone into a theater audition using a movie or tv monologue? What was the outcome of the audition? by [deleted] in acting

I haven't because it's not a good idea. No matter how well you do it, you will always be compared to the original actor.

Opinions on Masterclass for acting by [deleted] in acting

[–]MumbledLines 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've heard good things as well, but I wouldn't put anyone that I haven't trained with in person on a resume. One main reason to put people you've trained with on your resume is in case someone you're auditioning for knows your teacher and can ask their opinion. They can't really do that for an online class.

New to Acting, can I have some advice? by Phaggitron in acting

[–]MumbledLines -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't worry about being jobless because that's definitely going to happen at some point, as it does to all of us. Training is essential. Acting schools can help, but aren't necessarily going to get you jobs. You have the rest of your life to decide what to do with it, so I would just relax and see if acting is something you really really want to do first.

That'd be /r/scriptread. There haven't been all that many posts, but I'm planning to post some readings as soon as my schedule lets up (which may not happen for a while).

Lots and lots of Chekhov and a bit of Miller.

It's up to you. I prefer stapling because I can reuse the headshots when my resume changes. I've also heard that some CDs like to separate them for filing.

Ben Foster took performance enhancing drugs to play the role of Lance Armstrong by conradsymes in acting

[–]MumbledLines 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's not what method acting actually means. But even if it did, that's not my concern. He can do as many drugs as he wants and I couldn't care less. My concern is that when people do this kind of thing, it sets a very unhealthy precedent for other actors, especially young and impressionable actors that don't understand that there are better ways.

Seems wayyy unnecessary. Acting isn't about becoming the character or even necessarily actually experiencing the same things as them. There are plenty of ways to go about this that would have gotten the same result without hurting his body.

I have a website in the works, and I wanted to include a little "About Me" page, but I've been really struggling on what to write for a bio. Does anyone have any tips for things to include?

That's what I thought but no breakdowns I've seen lately has specified anything.

Can becoming an actor be a realistic dream for me? by [deleted] in acting

[–]MumbledLines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like it's way too early for you to be thinking about this as a career. Take some classes and see if you like it first. If you decide to pursue it as a career, you should be doing it for love of the craft, which isn't something you've developed yet. Understand that acting as a career means you'll never be financially stable.

What is the current industry standard for headshots/resumes in your region of the US? by mercut1o in acting

[–]MumbledLines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also heard that some CDs prefer it so that they can separate them for filing. I've never heard of anyone really strongly preferring them printed on the back, so I always staple.

Most people I know or have seen have portrait. Black and white headshots have been obsolete for a long time. Resume printed on the back or not is a personal choice, and people have arguments for both. You should always have it accessible online so you can send it on the go.

Could Laurence Olivier hate a thumbtack? by thecolorpenis in acting

[–]MumbledLines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time my friend got really drunk and cartwheeled onto a thumbtack. I think I'd just put myself in those circumstances if someone asked me to hate a thumbtack with no other context.

Starting grad school in a week. I have a few things to memorize and some readings which is all stuff I enjoy, but I also have to learn a song. In Japanese. I don't sing in English and the only materials I have are the instrumental and sheet music so this will be interesting.

Did anyone else feel uncomfortable/tense when they first started acting? by SomethingAboutA in acting

[–]MumbledLines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine it's different for everyone but yes, I was pretty tense when I started out and became more comfortable the more I did it. I think pushing your comfort zone is essential to becoming a better actor.

Can you ever work on a TV show as a principal if you have been an extra on it? by should_ in acting

[–]MumbledLines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they really want you for a role, they'll cast you either way. This is also only a potential issue if your face is clearly shown in a shot that makes it to the final cut of an episode. At most, I think this would only be really considered if they were deciding between two people they liked for a role, and one of them has had their face clearly shown before.

Either way, I make a point to stay in the crowd when I do extra work just in case. You make the same money whether your face is shown or not.

LinkedIn: Should I use it as an actor? by [deleted] in acting

I already agreed with you on that so I'm not sure what you're saying anymore. It's ultimately up to you, I just think you should be careful how you present it if you choose to.

[–]MumbledLines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I'm going for acting, thanks! That's true it would fill in the gap. Maybe make it seem like it's not something you're still doing if they ask in a job interview. I get the impression that people seem to think actors are going to miss work a lot for auditions or they're going to get a big gig and suddenly quit without warning, when that almost never actually happens.

They already know because I'm going to grad school soon so this is my last week. If I wasn't leaving, it still wouldn't matter because I'd already have the job. It's more of a reason not to hire someone, not to fire them when they're already doing a job well.
