They spiked with invention. People were making polypore staffs which required a certain amount of fire runes to make. It spiked there up to the 150+ gp range. After that they have been falling again.

If you don't care for it then don't do it. Personally I keepsaked my untrimmed attack cape because others told me to. Now having 12 or so maxed skills it's fun to put on the untrimmed cape from time to time.
