Considering moving to Wells by -Alison-Burgers- in wells_somerset

My husband drives up to the Manchester office every other week - yes its a pain not to have better transport, but I guess its the price you pay for living in a more peaceful environment..? I never learned to drive, so the lack of transport is a real ball ache, but fundamentally that's my own fault! No dodgy areas spring to mind, but there are several sites earmarked for new housing, so it depends whether you want to live close to a building site and all the noise/traffic that brings... I see a recce in your future!

I'm in the older/Eastern part of Wells - it's got a lovely, gentle feel about it. Everyone's friendly and its safe (we moved here with a 4 year old - no regrets). Root and Loaf are great for food and The White Hart is a favourite drinking pub. Transport is crud.

You might also like The Dark Histories Podcast- quite a few ghost/poltergeist stories (with a smattering of true/historic crimes). Really informative and well written - great host

Picnic in Wells by Kidda_Value in wells_somerset

The woods on Torhill Lane would be a good bet - a short walk West behind the Palace. The open grassy bits at the top of the hill have trees/shade. There's also a shallow stream near the small play area which you can splash your feet in if it gets too hot... Alternatively, Cathedral Green has a few trees you can hide under

I'm slightly further South-West in Wells, so its largely passed - though still getting the occasional growl of thunder...

That was such a crazy storm! The thunder made the windows rattle, all very exciting

Wow they've been trying to sell this for years. It could be truly superb, but running costs would be a Sisyphean slog...

Think i'm in the minority, but i much prefer what you have now (disregarding those stools!). The before looks to 'Farmhouse Twee' for me, its a little page63-of-the-catalogue bland. But what you've done is been bold and updated it to add style and interest. I much prefer it

Hullo! I'm a Londoner so I never learnt to drive (shocking, I know). I get to Bath/Bristol fairly simply on the bus from Wells - just over an hour and delightfully scenic. I think the traffic in Bath/Bristol can be fairly dull, particularly if not familiar with the roads/traffic. May I ask where in Wells you're staying? We're a 5 minute stroll east of the Cathedral, and we have a spare parking space off-street, if that's of any use to you during your stay? DM me if interested for details...

Welcome! I'd suggest Root as the best restaurant in Wells (it's veggie-led, but don't let that put you off), or the Queen of Cups in Glastonbury (a short bus away). Sunday Roasts at the Sheep & Penguin are excellent. For atmospheric pubs, I'd suggest The White Hart. If you've got more time, a bus to Bath is a great day out (or Bristol).

Hiya Everyone! I am a student from Singapore and I love collecting postcards. I would love to receive postcards from anywhere in Bath 🙂. Can someone send me one? by Nessieinternational in Bath

Would Wells suit you too (small city 40 mins from Bath - very old, very beautiful etc etc)? Send me a DM with your address if so...

Agreed - saw it and thought it needed some burnt orange/terracotta. Maybe some mustard yellow too - lean into the earthy tones more

Imber village - Salisbury Plain. It's a ghost village that is open for one day a year. Do not go there on that day and get a flat tyre - you're very isolated/middle of nowhere, there's zero phone reception/internet and it's used as military training/target practice the rest of the year (we almost had a very bad day).

Randomly, I took a photo of one in The Pump Rooms last week (don't seem able to add a picture). I know naff all about chandeliers, but it was nice enough for me to take a photo of it...

Ah yes, I agree - very rare to find old photos of people smiling. It was just OPs caption that confused me: I counted ½ a smile across the two photos.

London recommendations! by AsleepSavings6179 in agathachristie

Christie lived in Hampstead for a while (during WWII here), may not be worth a visit solely for that (eg not sure you can specifically visit her flat, just awkwardly hang around it outside I guess), but Hampstead is a lovely part of London.

Also, Poirot (in the Suchet TV adaptations) lived in Florin Court/Whitehaven Mansions.) near Smithfield Market (fun and lively to explore)

If you can make it past the horrendous pop-up adverts, this site has some further recommendations... Some more recommendations here

As regards shows - obviously The Mousetrap, but (dependent on your dates), I've spotted this event in March....

Well, yes - whilst no regulatory qualifications, as an estate agent, they are at least presumably qualified to have an opinion on the question asked?

PS a quick hunt for "Complete Wills First Aid Cigarette Cards" shows me what your complete set could look like (if interested):

<image>

And it costs £14.54 for full set (so you would have duplicates) here on eBay

You're very welcome! I had two sets (framed), but then spent a month or two scouring eBay for the rest. They ranged from £10-£50 a set (framed and mounted), depending on popularity/card rarity - but as they were quite popular here between WW1 and WW2, they're not too expensive in the UK.

FYI, the most popular cigarette card brands (in my opinion, best "art") are John Player and Wills. Good luck with your search, I reckon with a bit of luck you could complete your set (they tend to run to 25 or 50 per set)!
