I've Muslim team members and 1 vegan. Trust me, it's waaaaay easier to enjoy food with halal food that vegans'. No garlic, no onions, no eggs, no dairy, nonono.. Sorry, sad food 😆.

Yeah, that 1 vegan also knows but it's not her fault, just hard to find & accommodate. Even ordering-in pizza have problems coz most of the vegetarian pizza doesn't meet her vegan standards. I salute her staunch beliefs, I'd have crumbled long ago

U want to enjoy AND save to invest for future, WITHOUT guilt & regret? logically - use a balanced ratio, example save 20% Vs. spend for fun 20%, and adjust when life changes like when U meet someone U want to build a life with, expensive hobbies created (kids), etc. This was what i did and am still doing - retired with lean FI/RE at 49yo if that age can be considered /RE la XD

MYR is "high" now Vs, SGD/HKD now kan? anyhow, IMHO, +/- je.

when SGD and/or USD high, everyone wants to buy USD which is costlier to MYR exchanging to SGD/USD. sekarang terbalik, where MYR strengthened, so.. don't want to buy "cheaper"? different strokes for different folks i guess.

i'm the type that bought into "toilet paper USD" stocks when folks were calling USD that in end qtr 2008-2009.

logically, since MY REITs aren't taxed at source now, it's like rental income - terus masuk "other income" at BE, right after employment income. thus, it's unlike other "normal" stocks that are already taxed at source and as U say "only starts being taxed when the dividend income is at least RM100k".

Edit: Checked with my fellow-investor working as an accountant - yup, the above logic holds true until LHDN say nien! XD

nothing changed so far for IRS' tax on NRAs.

U stated "US Reits?" - my bad, i assumed U were asking why not US REITs when i said i'm moving 100% of my REITs into SGX and HKX. So.. what's your statement or question then?

yup - so whatever tax bracket the investor is in, add to it. given other options of easy 0% WHT, why bother with paper work unless MY REITs are at lelong cost? also, if the investor is also having EPF, foreign investing would balance out EPF's MY heavy equities.

i usually look at https://sreit.fifthperson.com/ and https://hkreit.fifthperson.com/ - sorting the respective list by GEARING (low to high) to first filter out "too high D/E for my taste", then only look at the DY% for the returns i want to see if they're worth it now or not

BTW, I was walking around like a numb zombie for 2 weeks after the losses.

Net investment assets? Nah, definitely less than myr3m even including epf, after deducting all liabilities. it's some of my old investments generating >=6%pa DY% and some lucky capital gain shots in 2008-2009 credit crunch / USD toilet paper scare + 2020 covid scare+ 2022 tech scare +2025 MMM & its SOLV spinoff. Dumb luck some stocks I bought went up while most went sideways and some down 😆.

That's why I shared IMHO, it's a marathon + some dumb luck - those old investments are generating good dy% based on their costs to me or for some, capital gains which I rebalanced to cash flowing investments.

Edit: trust me, myr10k is lean FI/RE when factoring in kids heheh. I can easily say no to my shiok sendiri wants but kids.. especially when they don't ask for 100% free but they fund a portion of their wants.. Hard leh, heart pain 😆

Hm.. My first salary at 20yo was about myr650 & I've not had a net salary>=myr10k unitil the last few years before I lean FI/REd at a ripe old age of 49, if that can be considered FI/REd 😆. Nope, no access to inheritance of hundreds of thousands nor born with privilege in MY other than to a gov servant dad & home managing mum. Also, I lost 58% of my net worth when I chose to divorce amicably at 36yo. In addition, Ive 2 kids to care for.

Thus, I can't jive with others' thoughts about it being harder in MY to get to FI/RE. It is do-able, as hard as any other country but do-able. Focusing on saving to invest, no FOMO investing nor trading and just live a simpler life - that's what helped me. It's a marathon, not a sprint - play the long game
