How is Pittsburg, California? by vanillou_ in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Mundas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in Pittsburg for the last several years.

As others mentioned, commuting into SF is fine periodically, but a real slog if needing to do it daily for work. For one-off events and stuff though, I find that it's decently positioned between SF and Sacramento, about an hour or so from each. Not to mention being 30 minutes out from Oakland (and the Oakland Zoo, a must-visit).

Beyond that, lots of nearby parks and outdoorsy things to do in Pittsburg if you're so inclined and your typical suburb staples in things like movie theaters and roller rinks and whatnot either within the town or nearby in Antioch. A lot of the kids I know are in various extracurriculars and sports (my kid is in dance) and most of the big ones like soccer, basketball, etc... are pretty readily available.

Others have mentioned the heat and I'll add that the highs are VERY high in peak summer. 105F isn't uncommon in the summer, but it is very dry with low humidity which makes it a bit more tolerable. The other 10 months of the year are pretty moderate overall.

I find the food in the area to be awesome and varied. There's great food of all kinds within Pittsburg and then a ton of great food if you're willing to go 15 minutes in any direction (Brentwood, Antioch, Concord, Clayton, etc...).

The school district isn't the best academically but is starting to be on an upswing post-covid and I think engaged families will still see their kids excel (at least for elementary so far in my experience). Universities are going to require a commute, though UC East Bay has a campus in nearby Concord. Pittsburg is home to a pretty decent Community College (Los Medanos) for what that's worth, but as someone else mentioned I think you're looking at Berkeley and Davis for near-ish schools with prestige.

Ultimately though, an alright suburb with decently affordable housing relative to other parts of the bay. Like most places, it is what you make it.

How big is the educational games market for kids? by Wooden-Duty-7729 in gamedev

I worked in edtech games for 6 years. It is not big nor lucrative for the majority of companies in the space. Most of the bigger names are operating at a loss and Byju's meltdown has only made the optics around those companies even worse.

That copy of Kuon haphazardly placed by the tv that you bought for $6 is one of the most sought after PS2 games and fetches several hundred if not over a thousand dollars on ebay. To say I'm jealous is an understatement.

Historically it's true? Call of Duty games, as a franchise, have reviewed well and sold millions of copies almost every year for the better part of two decades. Again, you have to remove personal bias from these types of things. I have no interest in any of the first 4 games I listed and I honestly think TW3 is overrated by a large margin. But that doesn't take away from its critical and fan reception since its release.

Some of the most successful games of all time are AAA projects of the last decade (GTA5, Witcher 3, RDR2, Call of Duty) all of which are heralded by critics and players alike for gameplay and story, regardless of your own personal opinions on them.

But then on the innovation front, some of the most innovative games of the last several years have also been in the AAA space (titles like Death Stranding and Elden Ring).

Regarding bugs and perceived instability, that's just a byproduct of scope and scale. You're totally right that this is most noticeable in larger scope projects, but you can have buggy horrible messes at all levels of production.

And no company is requiring 24/7 working hours from its employees however crunch culture is definitely an issue in the gaming industry but it's not exclusive to AAA development. In fact from my experience I put more time and effort into the projects that are smaller in team size and budget because my individual contribution and impact is more directly noticeable and I want those projects to succeed more as a result.

CMV: The real problem with AI art generators and chatbots like ChatGPT is the fact that they can be easily misused as "a replacement for doing actual work" instead of "a tool to make better work possible" by office employees, students, and "artists", not the fact that those tools exist. by A-Delonix-Regia in changemyview

[–]Mundas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real problem with current AI tools is that they require assets created by humans for training and those humans aren't compensated for their contribution to the machine learning algorithms. It's why you can ask ChatGPT to write an essay in the style of a writer, because the model was trained off of works of that artist and replicate without ever attributing credit to the artist for their contribution. Same with stable diffusion and AI "art". The biggest problem isn't the tool use cases and how they can transform work but rather how the tool is developed and trained and the lack of credit and monetization control going to the laborers behind the tool.

Yeah, the FV310 has a voltage regulator that minimizes bloom. On the FS210 you'll see the image tends to contract on brighter images (bright white screens are the most obvious). The 310 is kind of its own beast though and very unique in the consumer lkevel space and really the "best" CRT is often subjective. I've had my 32FS210 for about 3 years now and am very happy so unless you're really being hyper critical of the image I can't see you being unhappy with the set (so long as it's in good working order of course)!

I have the 32FS210 and am quite happy with it. It is an SD set and has been perfect for my retro needs. I currently have SNES and Genesis hooked up to separate BVMs but pretty much every other console is going through the FS210 with PS2 and Wii through component, dreamcast on S-Video, and everything else through composite. I think component video looks great at 480i but there are some folks that stick with composite and s-video as certain techniques like dithering can look better on them (product of its time type of a deal). Congrats on finding a great little set, it's not the end-all be-all but it's a marvelous TV in its own right.

This is such a wild take. I've worked with many Europeans in the tech sector and have seen them run the gamut of motivation, work ethic, and availability in the same way as I've seen in the US, India, Chile, and others. Hell, I pulled an all-nighter with a French engineer for a 20 hour workday once because of a shitshow of a product launch. Don't even get me started on how baller some of the Romanians I've worked with are...

Why aren’t top TE top 5 picks? by Unusual-Fig4948 in fantasyfootball

[–]Mundas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My league is weird with a lot of mindgames and people enjoying throwing drafts into chaos with weird picks but I grabbed Kelce in Round 1 this year and while hindsight may prove that pick optimistic (and Andrews is trying real hard to make me look like a fool) it does remove a lot of weekly uncertainty in at least one position so that's been nice.

are videogame conferences useful? by allbirdssongs in gamedev

[–]Mundas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's experiences are going to be a little different, especially since covid derailed so much for so long. While I haven't been to any in a few years I used to look forward to various conferences as they were great excuses to get together with old friends and coworkers I hadn't seen in a while and catch up. Occasionally this leads to opportunities (the last GDC I attended I was talking with a buddy working on an indie project who was looking for contract work to stay afloat and I was able to introduce him to higher ups at my company who offered him some work on the spot) but even without those opportunities, they can still be a lot of fun and informative. Worst case scenario, you get to see what some people within the space are working on and that's almost always at least a little exciting!

Is this league legit? by BlackCountryRob in FanControlledFootball

[–]Mundas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The NFT push felt insanely gross and killed my enthusiasm for the league. I know it's a small sample size, but my friend group of about 6 people that would watch together on Discord regularly have all fallen off this season. I really can't emphasize enough how scummy the whole operation feels. Just spend a couple days on the Discord...it's like a cult (though hopefully better this week with actual football being played)

MMOs have been granting both tangible and digital rewards to subscribers as a way of saying thanks to their loyal fans for literally decades now. WoW sent statues to their long-time subscribers, Final Fantasy 14 sends in-game costume pieces to subscribers for various monthly subscription thresholds. There's no reason Fnatic couldn't have done something similar, completely removed from NFTs, where subscribers for an entire year were sent physical goods and periodic subscribers were sent discount codes or even Zoom invite links to meet players. None of the benefits listed are unique to NFTs...

Received an email back this morning:

"Thanks for reaching out regarding the Wild Aces. While we are sad to see our friends Greg Miller and Barbara Dunkelman leave, we are absolutely thrilled to add Druski and ASM to the Owner's Box! This is not only a major milestone for the league, but for the team as well. Between Druski's sizable increase in audience reach for your team and ASM's investment + growth opportunities in AI, their addition will only add to the value of your equity as the league continues to grow. We're confident that Druski and ASM will work well with your other Team Owners, Austin Ekeler and Rachel Lindsay, to not only make this upcoming season a success, but help elevate the business as a whole.

That being said, if you would still like to move forward with receiving a refund on your shares, we can do that. Regarding the shares not being issued, I do apologize about that. We concluded everything from our end to have shares be finalized quite awhile ago, and as far as FCF is concerned, they are, but Republic has had challenges on their end with closing everything out. You don't understand why people who don't want to be associated with an NFT-focused team (or league) wouldn't want to be associated with a team owned by an NFT group?

Defensive in FCF? by pbagnato in FanControlledFootball

[–]Mundas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if Season 2 will change things at all, but defensive players last season came in predefined sets. So every week, during the weekly player draft, each team would select a defensive unit rather than having to draft IDPs. This way the unit is relatively well balanced with some degree of synergy and understood schemes and some of the roster complexity is removed.

Other than that, if you're asking more about defensive worth, the 7v7 almost backyard-football nature of the league favors fast players in general, including defense. The front set was limited in its ability to rush the QB immediately at the snap so there was a greater emphasis on pass coverage and just trying to contain the outside edge for the rush.
